Drake Maye (UNC) to portal?

Allegedly Alabama and Ohio State are battling to see who can buy him for 2023 starting spot. Bidding war for free agent has officially come to CFB, no one even pretending anymore.
I think many people saw this (portal madness) coming but this is not the NCAAs fault.
When the government steps in to help things, this is what you get.

This is the law of the land, not the NCAA

I disagree, it is 100% the NCAA's fault, everyone saw this coming a mile away, and the NCAA instead of getting out in front of it and doing their job, they sat on their hands and waited for govt to do it for them. So they can't cry about it, they had their chance to do the right thing, and get a handle on it, but they chose to stick their head in the sand and hope it would go away.

Yup...and this is why NCAA is in a mess and all the people clamoring these kids are treated like slaves, etc... this is what you get.

Put yourself in UNC shoes.

1. You recruit Maye...hell his brother left a legacy for him at UNC.
2. You develop him from unknown-ish to something known...maybe a heisman contender.
3. If Maye craps out, you still got him but if he hits into a good player...he leaves for bigger program.

So why again would UNC really give a damn about football if we're relegating these level programs as minor league baseball teams to top tier programs now?

The NCAA for decades was happy to have indentured servant treatment of college athletes. Now, it is wild wild west. Kiffin said last yr every single player on every team should go in the portal and see what you are offered.

Remember waiver lists? You leave a team, are going to have to sit out a transfer season, AND your former coach could dictate what school you were allowed to choose? That was really a thing, in a not too distant past. Chickens have come home to roost as payback.

I consider him the best QB in college football. He is really polished to be so young, the total package. I sure wish we had someone with his skills.

Lots of folks say that but never follow up with what that "handle" may look like. So long a 1 kid pushed, we would have ended up here.

but JHB...that kind of over the top talk is part of how we got the messed up system. Why use indentured servant? That is a kin to calling them slaves.

1. Kids have been able to quit college ball anytime they wanted. They were never forced into anything.
2. For their efforts...kids have gotten free education. If that isn't worth to some much...they also got free room and board. Free clothing. Experiences to see parts of the world many would never see. That is easily worth $40k per year to many families.

Why is sitting a year to new school such a big deal? That is exactly the model we need to get back to IMO. I can get in line with a no sit for graduate transfers. I can also see a rule where coach leaves and all the kids should get a waiver on sit out a year.

If it is "slavery" to not be able to go to any team you want..any time you want. Is NFL slavery? Is NBA slavery?...nearly any pro sports don't have free agency each year. Myles Garrett is a great player and he can't leave Cleveland Browns....is that slavery?

It's not even close to "slavery" or indentured servitude and saying so is IGNORANCE, plain and simple.

My ancestors were both and there is a huge difference between both of those as well as between them and someone that was/is being given a >$25-40k per year, fast track education to play a sport. Stop indulging stupidity by repeating ridiculous arguments.

The NCAA could have removed their NIL restrictions years ago and didn't. They didn't because it creates a problem for them- since they and their member institutions were selling NIL for their own profit and expenses respectively. The current free-for-all is because the ncaa was not pro-actively getting their guidelines in order to show what penalties would be incurred if a player is given incentives to attend a program and disguising it as NIL.

No tears for North Carolina, they ought to have plenty of money to try and keep their QB

Yep, he's doing it because he knows it would be an all-out bidding war for a year.

They could have done it themselves, placed limits, all kinds of things before the US Govt got involved. Once they stuck their heads in the sand and let the govt get involved, they were screwed.

NIL definitely has its problems, but to put it in perspective, if the school has, say, some great acting talent that wants to earn a degree in Theater or well anything really, but wants to perform in the theater program, but then also gets lucrative deals to act in TV commercials or to be in a movie, or something, there would have never been a question asked. I remember back in the day, I think it was Steve Alford, got in trouble for posing for a calendar when he played for IU. That was utterly ridiculous because that same standard would never apply to any other student on campus.

Amateurism in sports long went away when they started letting professional athletes compete in the Olympics. There's no other reason in a free market economy for anyone to not be able to earn what they're worth. but yeah, there needs to be some way to prevent unfair recruiting advantages that inherently result from this free for all.

You still didn't answer. What kind of limits? No matter what NIL limit they tried it wouldn't have withstood scrutiny as it would be arbitrary and the players would be treated differently than other students. Unfortunately, that is also why we are stuck with this idiotic transfer portal. The NCAA could have delayed this but they couldn't stop it and I don't believe the delay would have lasted long.

Indentured servant is a joke of a term. At a crap school these days tuition/room & board/fees can run 75-100K per year.
Servants my a$$.

NCAA should have simply done what Spurrier suggested and got laughed at…..pay the players a fair amount of money equally.

To be fair, there has been some smoke around him. After Mack Brown publicly claimed that he had “a starter” who had been offered money to transfer by at least 15 different schools, most people assumed that Maye was the only one on their roster who would be in that much demand. So far, he’s not actually in the portal and denies any intention to be though. Even if he goes back on his word, I highly doubt we win that sweepstakes.

They had the chance to make the rules and keep the federal government out of it. What those rules could or should have been that's not for me to decide. I'm just saying you said this isn't the NCAA's fault, and I vehemently disagree with you there, as this whole wild wild west version happened, because the NCAA sat on their hands and dared the federal government to get involved.

The NCAA should have allowed this 20 years ago.

Exactly, my argument with the original comment shouldn't be taken that I think NIL or transfer portal are bad. My whole disagreement is that you can't say this isn't the NCAA's fault because the Feds forced their hand. If they were proactive and set the framework a lot of confusion and hand wringing could have been avoided.

Dude...it's called like 99% of Americans live in this same scenario.

I work for a company that the CEO gets $8-10Mil and I get a fraction of that. We mostly all work in the exact same scenarios...it's called life.

So it's only fair if Will Levis cashes out but is it really fair for maybe Michael Drennan to get the scholarship he got...but never really played or helped the team. I guess my point is it gets fuzzy when you start trying to define fair vs. unfair.
