Dominique Hawkins vs Wagner

Who is the better player and why? Don’t tell me about press clippings. Tell me about being a good college basketball player.
In Hawkins best year he averaged
19.2 mpg 4.7 ppg 1.7 asst. .8 steals and 1.6 rebounds while shooting 40% from the field and 34 from 3.

Wagner averages
28.4 mpg 12 ppg 3.7 asst 1.1 steals and 1.9 rebounds while shooting 44% from the field and 31 from 3.

Wagner doing this as a freshman and Hawkins best year as a senior.

You be the judge.

Your nuts...

DJ is better.

1. Hawkins couldn't handle well for a guard
2. Hawkins found his niche last years in getting his 3pt shot better and defensive specialist in limited minutes. His final year he got to 35% 3pt and clamped dudes defensively.

DJ is scoring way more and has way more of a focus at guard as Fr...and his shooting is 43%fg..31% 3pt and rising.

You seem to think you know the answer but it seems you have the wrong answer. I liked Hawkins but Wagner is a much, much better player. I didn't have to check stats or read press clippings to know that since I've watched both play for UK.

Wow! If you are seriously asking that question, you know absolutely nothing about college basketball. Just unbelievable.

Wagner and it’s not even close. Hawkins was a good defender though. Wagner is like an improved Andrew Harrison.

My point being none of these guys are NBA ready. Reeves maybe. I wish Calipari would really care about their future and tell them that. They make more here in their second year than they would playing in some dark, old, decrepit gym in the G league not to mention the exposure. Sure Wagner is better than Hawkins but look at Hawkins from his freshman year til his senior year. He was a veteran leader on that team. Everything in this world is rush rush rush. What’s wrong with staying in school, winning a couple of titles and becoming a legend?

Interesting question, OP. I've been wondering the same lately but between Todd Svoboda and Terrence Jones.

Your point is to trash UK players.

Maybe if DJ would stop the constant left handed layups! Outside of that, Hawkins wishes he was as good as DJ. I loved Hawkins though. Tough kid. Played good enough defense and knew what "Kentucky" across his chest meant.

Dominique is a career 37% FG and 28% 3FG guy who averaged 2.4ppg, 1rpg and .85apg.
DH's job was not a scorer, but be a valuable team member. If my memory serves me correctly, his defense saved our bacon against Michigan in the tournament.

Overrated.

"NBA ready" does not mean what it once did. Now you even see top 10 picks in the G-league. The question is can you get yourself drafted such that you can get a guaranteed contract? Wagner, probably so (I'd say in the 25-35 range). The only way he could improve that is to utterly dominate with his current game/style, or to improve his 3pt shooting, which it hasn't been bad since T-giving

What about Cliff Hawkins?
Here is how I personally would rank our PG's in the 2000's:
1 Ulis
2 Wall
3 Fox
4 Knight
5 SGA
6 Rondo
7 Sheppard
8 Dillingham

9 Wallace
10 Washington
11 Wagner
12 Maxey
13 Bradley
14 Andrew
15 C.Hawkins
16 Hagans
17 Teague
18 Sparks
19 Mintz
20 Briscoe
21 Mays
22 Wheeler
23 D.Hawkins
24 Harrow
25 Saul
26 Porter
27 Askew

Wagner by far. I liked Dom a lot but, he is not in the same ball park as Wagner is. I can not understand the dislike for Wagner. 2 lost games that would have been wins if he had played.

Not to be argumentative, but DJ's last game he went 2-10 so his shooting is dropping, not rising.

Kids don't care about becoming a "legend", especially in a state they're not from.
