You are confusing the reasons CM Newton booked UL in 1994 with the different reasons Kentucky still plays UL now in the 2020s. If UL was still a secondary conference team, they would no longer be on our schedule despite the wishes of UL grads in the state legislature. As an ACC team, UL serves multiple purposes on our schedule, and I will remind you that UL was a dangerous game and possible loss for Stoops up through Lamar Jackson's tenure. Yet Stoops supported and played the game anyway. And Stoops beat Lamar.
The method of using the first several games like a warmup schedule gives Stoops a chance to work out the rust and inconsistencies, which has become more useful in the age of the transfer portal.
Today Florida plays McNeese. Last week, Florida got hammered by Utah in SLC. Does Billy Napier consider this smart scheduling?
LSU got embarrassed last week by FSU in Tallahassee. Was that smart scheduling? Afterward, Brian Kelly scorched his team to the media. Today, LSU plays Grambling.
Like Kentucky, Georgia does not play P5 nonconference teams until their rival game against Georgia Tech over Thanksgiving week. Is Kirby scared to lose?
UT has the weakest scheduleIf not, they're close.
We should be playing a Big 10, Big 12 or ACC opponent.
Even fellow "basketball schools" like UNC and Kansas are playing better comp than us.
Makes Stoops look scared to take a loss.
They will whip our asses like a rented mule. You’ll be drunk on cheap bourbon at halftime and won’t even look at the final score.UT has the weakest schedule
I agree with OP. I can see 1 cupcake on the schedule, maybe 2, but three? That is a disgrace. There is no reason whatsoever for UK to be playing an FCS school and two other MAC level schools. It is a slap to the fans and season ticket holders. Obviously, the players don't seem to get up for these games and seem to sleep walk through large parts of it.
I would be surprised, through the future reorganization of the elite football conferences that rules are put in place regarding non-conference scheduling. With all of the money that TV is paying the SEC, I am surprised they haven't weighed in.
But UK is supposed to be an ambitious program on the rise.
Just don't see the downside to rolling the dice.
I guess the downside would be putting a MCB or Liberty bowl in jeopardy but who knows if our real team will actually play in that game.
Stakes are higher early.
You get better football.
There is a reason. We want to be bowl eligible and that’s the only way to make sure it happens.
The SEC hasn’t weighed in because the SEC wants as many teams as possible to be bowl eligible due to how the bowl payouts work.I agree with OP. UT played Austin Peay yday on ESPN+I realize that.
It's still an unattractive game that would probably be there without the requirements.
Who cares. And we do play an ACC team in non conference.
What is your problem with Stoops?
We have the #1, 3, and 9 ranked teams in the country on our conference schedule. Every year we play in the toughest conference in the country. Taking some warmup games in September is smart, and playing UL and EKU scores political points in Frankfort by keeping all that money in the state and keeping all those connected alumni happy.
Yup.There is a reason. We want to be bowl eligible and that’s the only way to make sure it happens.
