Does UK have the weakest non conference schedule in the SEC?

OP: "Does UK have the weakest non conference schedule in the SEC?"

Evidently not...7-up at the half against FCS EKU.

GBB!

You are confusing the reasons CM Newton booked UL in 1994 with the different reasons Kentucky still plays UL now in the 2020s. If UL was still a secondary conference team, they would no longer be on our schedule despite the wishes of UL grads in the state legislature. As an ACC team, UL serves multiple purposes on our schedule, and I will remind you that UL was a dangerous game and possible loss for Stoops up through Lamar Jackson's tenure. Yet Stoops supported and played the game anyway. And Stoops beat Lamar.

The method of using the first several games like a warmup schedule gives Stoops a chance to work out the rust and inconsistencies, which has become more useful in the age of the transfer portal.

Today Florida plays McNeese. Last week, Florida got hammered by Utah in SLC. Does Billy Napier consider this smart scheduling?

LSU got embarrassed last week by FSU in Tallahassee. Was that smart scheduling? Afterward, Brian Kelly scorched his team to the media. Today, LSU plays Grambling.

Like Kentucky, Georgia does not play P5 nonconference teams until their rival game against Georgia Tech over Thanksgiving week. Is Kirby scared to lose?

Had OU scheduled and SEC offices forced us to cancel when it was announced OU and Texas were coming to SEC in 2024. Said the OU return game would interfere with SEC scheduling. Hard to get a game for the following year, take who you can get.

I'm old enough to remember when we played Indiana every year. It was a good compromise in that we played a Big 10 team, but it was very winnable. It was also a fun border rivalry. I'd like to see us add another power conference team, but it doesn't have to be against a traditional power.

I sure hope so. We will desperately need those wins. We aren’t very good.

I agree with OP. I can see 1 cupcake on the schedule, maybe 2, but three? That is a disgrace. There is no reason whatsoever for UK to be playing an FCS school and two other MAC level schools. It is a slap to the fans and season ticket holders. Obviously, the players don't seem to get up for these games and seem to sleep walk through large parts of it.

I would be surprised, through the future reorganization of the elite football conferences that rules are put in place regarding non-conference scheduling. With all of the money that TV is paying the SEC, I am surprised they haven't weighed in.

Every team plays a cupcake or two, but I have long expressed the same thoughts as the OP. Let’s opt out of our MAC membership. Give me Rutgers, Northwestern, Minnesota, Nebraska, Cal, Boston College, Syracuse, Az. St. and so on. Plenty to select from.

There is a reason. We want to be bowl eligible and that’s the only way to make sure it happens.

But UK is supposed to be an ambitious program on the rise.
Just don't see the downside to rolling the dice.
I guess the downside would be putting a MCB or Liberty bowl in jeopardy but who knows if our real team will actually play in that game.
Stakes are higher early.
You get better football.

The downside is derailing a season with an early loss and having to look into the teeth of a 9 game gauntlet filled with Alabama, Auburn, Texas, LSU, Florida, and Georgia.

Schedules can have a cumulative effect. It's why these lesser teams that jump up into better conferences get beaten down after dominating lesser competition for years.

Exactly. That's the only realistic goal here as winning the SEC is never happening and don't see a 12 team playoff bid either unless we somehow miraculously went 10 and 2 on a season.

The SEC hasn’t weighed in because the SEC wants as many teams as possible to be bowl eligible due to how the bowl payouts work.

If UK scheduled another power 5 school instead of an FCS school, that doesn’t earn any more TV money for the conference. But ensuring UK is bowl eligible does.

An FCS opponent also earns more money for UK directly because we can avoid a home and home series, and basically gain an extra home game every other year that we wouldn’t have if we played someone like Indiana out of conference.

Who cares. And we do play an ACC team in non conference.

We scheduled these games years ago. Is it our fault that the teams we scheduled haven't been that good the past year? Akron is usually very competitive in the MAC. EKU is VERY competitive on their level. Our ACC opponent is competitive in their conference.

Idgas where they are talent wise when we play them. I care how we play the games in prep for the conference schedule. That's it.

UT plays Virginia from the ACC. Also scheduled a year or two ago, but when UVa sucked. No one is complaining about the cupcake scheduling by UT.

You play the games you have scheduled and don't worry about it. The SEC is tough enough without a bunch of BS ANGST about scheduling OOC. You'd think people would be praising our scheduling since UL has been favored and ranked in MANY of our matchups during the past several seasons.

Stop listening to the idiots in the media and on sports sites that are comparing apples to tomatoes.

What is your problem with Stoops?

That's the real question, if they're even a UK football fan.

We have the #1, 3, and 9 ranked teams in the country on our conference schedule. Every year we play in the toughest conference in the country. Taking some warmup games in September is smart, and playing UL and EKU scores political points in Frankfort by keeping all that money in the state and keeping all those connected alumni happy.

Exactly. If a person follows college football, they don't ask these stupid questions that get asked EVERY year.

What I LOVE about the MAC games is that it rids the stands of the casual UK Football fans that don't bring much to the table.

Pretty much every other team in our conference plays two teams from MAC level conferences. THEIR fans show up to the games and are LOUD making it a REAL home game advantage. They don't bich and moan about playing them every year, either. They buy their season tickets and show up TO BALL OUT as fans. Maybe we'll get to that level someday.

In the meantime, we just have to keep building towards that goal.
