DeAaron Fox

Fox is just making fools of idiots thinking payments for likeness will solve anything. It will just further screw up college sports and players will move on anyway. He is absolutely correct.

I don't think it is meant to keep kids in school. I think it's meant to be fair to the young men, and to give them some money to make college a bit more doable.

It's still the most absurd thing ever that TNT has a Zion cam and Zion isn't getting a dime. It's one thing to have a star player cam. But they even used his name. TNT/NCAA can profit from that. The kid whose name is being used can't.

The media ask some of the dumbest questions to players. Fox’s response made me chuckle.

Ah, but if they didn't ask the question, you wouldn't have had Fox's reaction. Sometimes the question (no matter how dumb it sounds) allows for a reaction you wouldn't have otherwise heard.

they say Zion made 500K for going to duke.......... now he's making a few million a year so yeah.......... unless they make a couple of million a year to play in the NCAA... the good ones should leave.

Its the 2nd rounders and questionable borderline first rounders that might come back

what offends me is that you are linking Fox's tweets where even he uses "you're" and the OP still says "your" come on man.

Wouldn't this question be better suited for someone that isn't making millions already. Any player in a similar situation to De'Aaron isn't going to care about the likely dollars involved in this scenario.

Fair? You want to make Zion even richer? How many millions is enough? You think his didn’t profit off of ESPN making him a god? What about the 1000’s of athletes that will never earn a nickel but work even harder. That’s fair to you? Maybe we should go back and pay every exploited athlete that ever played college sports.

If you think for one brief second the states did this for any reason other than a recruiting leg up, I have a bridge to sell you. It’s a dumbass concept. That it came from government should tell you enough. Fox just telling it like it is.

I don't have a perfect system. But Zion should be allowed to profit off of the camera that is named after him following his every move.

Didn't take it as a shot at UK at the slightest... Because of how high he went in the draft and how good he is, he's obviously right. The money he would have made at UK had he been paid would have been nothing compared to even his rookie contract.

Totally honest and sensible answer, and I like that he is so straight-forward about it.

Exactly. Even if they pay all players, the ones that sell the tickets (star players) should not get the same as a token, roster filling on the bench. Just like in the NBA, the stars get the max contracts and then you have the league minimum bench warmers. The poster saying Zion should not get even more rich, uh, yes he should, he did not get ONE cent off them using his name on that cam. Put someone like Mark Krebs name on the cam, nobody would even pay attention.

Yeah, he needs more to go with all those millions. Did you notice how skinny he is? I bet he didn't eat the whole year. Starving to death. Who cares about the other thousands of college athletes. Let's pay filthy rich athletes that have everything already and make them more filthy rich.

This whole concept is just pathetic. Greedy states, greedy agents, greedy fans all while 99.9% of athletes get shit. Let's pay them to come to Kentucky. Duke will pay them to come there and not come here. The big markets will pay more than anyone. Really really smart.

I think you're making a separate argument. Are pro athletes overpaid? Sure.

But if someone is going to make money off of you--you should get a piece of that pie. Just because Zion was going to get pro dollars, or Duke had paid, or whatever you're arguing--we all deserve to get paid when someone else is profiting off of us.

Sure he did(profit from it). Its called exposure, that in turn, led to the #1 pick; and $20 million of guaranteed money over the next 2 years. Not to mention the endorsements.
These kids do not need to be paid. There is a choice. If you do not want to go to college and be "exploited"---Well, then don't. Go over seas, and play for Turkey. Lets see how that turns out, in comparison to getting to play at Kentucky. Where scouts basically see your every game....Then there is scout day. You are on ESPN, CBS, every night; sometimes the SECN. Ummmm, you ain't getting that in Turkey, Iran, Australia, etc, etc....And thats why kids come to college: The stage. The exposure.

W/O CBB, the NCAA, these kids would not have the stage they have. Kentucky, Duke, UNC, KU, etc, etc..., provides an unparalleled platform for these young men. And on top that, room/board, access to some of the best facilities in the country, top shelf medical treatment....Travel. Clothing. Crazy ass food.

This argument that kids are being "taken advantage of" is asinine. Hell if anything, its the kid taking advantage of the school, i.e. free advertisement for his product---Which is him. His abilities. And he's getting to do so on the schools dime.

No, I’m saying nobody is restricting anyone from anything. Kids can go pro straight out of high school. Just go overseas. They can make money on their likeness. No problem. You just bought into a bogus argument to give millionaires even more money while you crap all over 99.9% of players who work just as hard. There was NO need to do this except to make the rich even richer. I could care less what an NBA player makes. Let the market deal with it. I’m talking about the corruption of college sports instead of cleaning it up.

You advocate adding corruption to a corrupt organization as mandated by the most corrupt entities in history: state governments. What could go wrong with that?

Fox made $5,000,000 his first year. He was also a year closer to a second contract. Even if the NCAA lets these kids make money it will be capped much lower than what he made his first year. Fox's shoe contract is probably more than the NCAA will permit these kids to make. No brainer.

Just curious, which major entities existing in the US today would you say are not corrupt?

It is just like wanting to go pro in any other profession. You go to college to get to the next level. Nobody wants to be in college forever, it is meant to get you to where you want to go and what you want to do. Plus Fox is a competitor, he definitely wanted to play against the best as soon as possible

This! This entire issue about paying athletes in college for their likeness is nothing more than trying to get a recruiting advantage. NOBODY gives a damn about these athletes. Even these whiny Nancy boys that cry over the impoverished Zion because he didn’t get paid in college. This ignores 1000’s of harder working athletes and corrupts the sport they love to play much greater than it is currently.

I went to college for a BS degree and was too naive to know any better. Had a friend drop out his freshman year to work full-time as a live music engineer and I wondered why he didn’t stay and get his degree. Met a girl at a party who worked for MTV at the age of 20. Like an idiot, I actually asked her why she didn’t want to go to college. Again, I was young and thought college was everything.

Now I know better. We’re lucky to see guys like Fox play in a UK Jersey. They belong in the open market, getting paid as much as they can.

That Fox/Monk/Bam team. Jesus.

Open market is out of college. The issue is the NBA and the players union. Obliterating amateurism to steal a few recruits is heinous.

I mean, the silver lining for us in the current environment is that UK actually makes elite talent *better* before they’re eligible for the league. Not sure if Fox would be in the same position he’s in now if he attempted to go straight from HS. I think once the leash is off and kids don’t have to spend a year in school, we’ll see a similar trend back to the early 2000s where NBA teams don’t want to take too many chances on kids who simply dominate in HS basketball. More Lenny Cookes out there than LeBrons. Good college coaches/programs will still have value. They should pay the players too.

jeez, another make the rich kids richer. If Zion was so desperate for cash he could have gone to Europe. Fox just told you it makes no difference to staying. If Fox needed the year to earn 5 million, then I’d say he was amply compensated. Again, just more drivel and tripe to rationalize paying .01% of players while the vast majority get nothing. Why pay them? To recruit them. Period.
