You’re right about the stretch 4. He’d be perfect for that role today.Just a great great player. Strong as a mule. He played for the Colonels and won a championship there.
I saw an interview with Jabbar once and he said the player he most hated to play against was Issel.
Issel would thrive in today’s game. He was a stretch 4 before anyone knew what a stretch 4 was.
When the NBA did the top 50 of 50 years 25 years ago there were many players that played in his era saying he should be in that 50.
He’s UK’s all time scoring and rebounding leader. And only played like 85 games.
Awesome picture!! Those 2 together with the Colonels were almost unstoppable..I can remember when the Kentucky Wildcats played the Jacksonville University Dolphins in 19 70.
COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 14 (AP)—Jacksonville continued its climb in major college basket ball today, upsetting Kentucky, 106‐100, in the National Colle giate Mideast regional final.
Rex Morgan scored 28 points and 7‐foot‐2‐inch Artis Gilmore made 24 points and seized 20 rebounds to spark the Dolphins into the N.C.A.A. semifinals next week against St. Bonaven ture at College Park, Md.
Top‐ranked Kentucky, suffer ing only its second loss against 26 triumphs, played the last 10 minutes without its all‐Ameri can, Dan Issel. The 6–8 Wild cat star fouled out after he had 28 points and 10 rebounds.
As a senior he averaged 33.9 points per game leading the team to the Elite 8. AVERAGED. Then proceeded to score over 27,000 points in the ABA/NBA with over 11,000 rebounds and 2900 assists. The man was an outstanding player and outstanding ambassador for UK.Gonna try and start a thing. Rex was first, let’s look at Big Dan. For those that saw it live, just how good was he? I remember him from childhood vaguely with the nuggets. Of course, wasn’t close to seeing him at UK. We hear a lot about those guys not being able to keep up today, so for those that saw it in real time, just how dominant was he?
I do remember him in the pros. He was a below the basket, slow, average heighted basketball player. But he was one hell of a basketball player. He was just gifted around the basket. He was VERY strong, aggressive and had a very high basketball IQ.I know but just how good.
He was actually a very poor 3pt shooter in the pros, 20% for his career, 25% in the NBA.Saw Dan play. He would have no problem fitting into today's game and would likely thrive in it. He was like a poor man's Larry Bird as mentioned above. He had a high basketball IQ, was tough as nails, a great shooter who would have benefitted from the 3 point line, great rebounder, great work ethic, etc. He wasn't called the Horse for nothing. Love to have him on the team in the current era.
Different distance from college. Still believe he would have been fine.He was actually a very poor 3pt shooter in the pros, 20% for his career, 25% in the NBA.
I recently sold my collection of UK basketball cards on Ebay. $$$$$$
The game at Memorial Coliseum on January 24, 1970 was one of my all time favorite regular season games to see in person. Maravich was the most entertaining player I have ever seen. He would score 50 and you walk away talking about his passing skills. He was a magician.Saturday, January 24, 1970
Kentucky vs. LSU at Lexington
U.K. 109 – LSU 96
Issel – 35 points; 10 rebounds
Maravich – 55 points
Saturday, February 21, 1970
Kentucky vs. LSU at Baton Rouge
U.K. 121 – LSU 105
Issel – 51 points; 17 rebounds
Maravich – 64 points

Or run by me anything you want to let go of before it hits the block.
Most disappointing UK loss of my lifetime. Issel was and still is my favorite UK player and it's not close. A great player who'd still be just as relevant today as he was then.#1 All time UK scoring leader in 3 years!
Was great during his collegiate career and would be great in todays game.
There were better athletes but Dan was a basketball player.
He was not real quick but could get to the basket, was not a great jumper but a great rebounder, beautiful shot that he could get off against any defender. The 3 point line would not have helped him much, but he was deadeye at 15’ or so.
The Jacksonville loss was so tough to accept as Dan was called for a charge against Vaughn Wedeking at mid-court in his last game at UK! Remember that name and the game like it happened yesterday but I can’t remember where I put my keys!
I will PM you.
Saw him at every level. Best ever at UK. IN the pros.?? But Kareem said he was the toughest for him to guard. Best of the best.So good that he only played 3 years. Hasn’t played at UK since 1970 and is still the all leading scorer in UK history. There was no 3 point shot or shot clock.
Nightmare.I still remember the NCAA game against Jacksonville when was called for a bogus charge, for his 5th foul, just running down the court after a basket. Did not even have the ball. After he fouled out, we were done. Lost 106 to 100.
I watched him he had a great up and under move and as Adolph Rupp said about him "he doesn't jump very high but he always comes down with the ball" he didn't get nicknamed the horse for nothing...remember him playing his last game against Jacksonville and their two 7 footers Artis Gilmore and Pembrook Burroughs he kept UK in the game till fouling out.Gonna try and start a thing. Rex was first, let’s look at Big Dan. For those that saw it live, just how good was he? I remember him from childhood vaguely with the nuggets. Of course, wasn’t close to seeing him at UK. The first 2 UK games I got to see were …….Western Ky and Jacksonville. Not a great start, lol .Unstoppable until they got to the NCAA Regional Finals. Issel never went to a Final Four. But, then ... neither did my favorite U.K. player of all time - Cotton Nash.
I was at that game. Issel was fouled out on an offensive foul at about midcourt.I can remember when the Kentucky Wildcats played the Jacksonville University Dolphins in 19 70.

He stacked up against guys like Maravich, Dr. J, Magic Johnson, Kareem, Larry Bird, Moses Malone, Bill Walton, etc. I have to think in his prime he could have held his own. Dude was tough as nails.Really wondering from some young timers that say him live in college how he would atack
Up against, say, a guy like Cousins, or Towns etc. players today.
He would have taken Boogie and Townes and all of Cal's big guys and not so big guys to school. He stacked up against guys like Maravich, Dr. J, Magic Johnson, Kareem, Larry Bird, Moses Malone, Bill Walton, etc. I have to think in his prime he could have held his own. Dude was tough as nails.
That was a cheap ass call too. Everyone was running down the court and the guy just stopped at mid court and dan hit him and he fouled out. Maybe that was the beginning of the flop?I was at that game. Issel was fouled out on an offensive foul at about midcourt.
Dan was/is the best basketball player I have ever seen in a UK uniform!!! Mike casey was the best on his freshman team, but from Soph forward Dan got better almost every game.
They played Pistol Pete 6 times and Pete was phenominal every game , but Dan's team never lost to Pete.
Again, Dan was the BEST!
