Dan Hurley: 50% of my roster or more is considering the transfer portal

Early on yeah but he’s rarely played the past 2 months. I think he would be a weapon in our offense. His main issues like a lot of our guys is defense. Hurley has barely played him though. In the games he’s gotten 14+ minutes he’s scored double digits. The problem is Hurley plays him 2,3,4,5 minutes like 7 games in a row and then 20, then sits him forever. I’m sure he’s never gotten in any kind of flow.
Yeah he pulled the plug on his playing time.
I'm sure he'll be one of the one's gone.

Pitino has adapted. Izzo has adapted. Pope and Oats and Golden are all adapting and dealing. What’s Hurley’s excuse? Like it or not this is the sport now.

No crying on the yacht. When your making millions to coach a sport no one cares that your dealing with the sport. It’s your job. Do it or quit.

Man. Whiny coaches are the worst.

A couple things I'd like to get some board feedback on:

Is the amount of NIL money being thrown around really sustainable going into the future? I know the SEC is making more and more money every year, and a big portion of that is distributed to its member institutions, but still.......it seems maybe to me the amount schools are spending on athletes isn't sustainable. Furthermore, schools with the wealthiest donors get the advantage, because the school has more money to play with. Although, any Yankees fan knows that the most money doesn't always equal championships.

Secondly, is the 15 scholarships thing for sure happening for the 25-26 season? If so, 2 more spots would probably really change our approach to recruiting and the portal.

Starting next year there will be revenue sharing from the school plus NIL from the private sector.

I also think Pope's honest love for Kentucky will play a role. That sort of thing is infectious and is the exact opposite of what the previous coach did. If players come, love their time, and Pope passes along his love and passion for Kentucky basketball, it has to improve our odds of retaining players. I have certainly stayed at a job despite someone else offering slightly more money because I was happy where I was.
Worked a job in the mines in '17/'18 for $15 hour.. Anywhere else would have been $22-$25.. But was great bunch work for,, laid back,, and they didn't want you to work wide open.. Just put enough coal outside to pay the bills.. They said we could run wide open but we'd work ourselves out of a job faster,, lol.. Also was $10 on check and $5 + any OT straight cash..

Mahaney can't play in any program that plays with pace. He is lost when forced to play fast. Hesitant, soft, and in between. Also can't defend anyone. He's weak/small and bad.

His comments were truthful when you consider he knows who is going to leave. So the "50%" is:

1. Ahmad Nowell-oft injured, got fat/heavy and when he gets put in a game looks like Devin Askew in terms of getting the ball over half court and then picking up his dribble or staying 40 ft from the basket. His "trainer" has been whining online all year too.

2. Jayden Ross

3. Aidan Mahaney

4. Yousef Singare

As other posters have stated--McNeeley is gone, so are Diarra/Johnson and Karaban may be gone-he was terrible most of the year but is playing well lately and his draft status won't move much no matter what. So the guys he'd be assuming would be staying:--Ball, Reed, Stewart and Abraham.

We may have one to do that, but I don't think it would be Chandler, if he is disciplined enough to go a two year mission, I would have to think he would stay here. He's just now coming around, I know Utah is home but what better place to be and play than at Kentucky.
My single worry about Chandler transferring back to BYU is solely based on the Mormon factor. If he was committed/involved enough in the church to do a 2 year mission as a 4star, top 50 recruit, then I could see a world where he feels less connected to the Mormon community since Lexington isn’t exactly known for a thriving Mormon community.

With that said, I think he’s pretty connected/loyal to Pope and I’m sure there are a couple Mormon churches throughout the city…just not the dominant culture of the city as it is in Utah

Reed is gone per Trilly FWIW

He's just deflecting blame off himself because they have fell off this season.
He admitted he wouldn't have said "I'm the best f'ing coach in the game" if he knew the cameras were on him.

That just confirms to me a ton about what I thought of Hurley's (lack of) character...

"I'm ok being an arrogant jerk as long as I can put on a great face for the camera".

If I didn't know better, I would've thought he was the Hurley who played for the master of this kind of deception, Coach K.

Integrity matters...neither of those guys display it.

P.S. Hurleys a nerd
I would go with "asshole nerd" or just "assnerd"............ but that's just me.

Yep. There will be somebody willing to do it if your whiny ass doesn't like that change has taken place.... and probably will do it for less money.

No, I think he’s just being brutally honest. This is the new CBB world we live in. Most talented players consider themselves free agents for sale every year now. And on nearly every team.

It’s just a totally different mentality than existed just a couple decades ago.

Will be interesting to see how Pope fairs in this regard. I completely agree with you and I do think it matters if you like the coach personally or not.

Agree 100% that the NCAA sticking their head in the sand with all of this made it 10x worse. Both with transfers and the NIL. I'm not sure how old you are, but I still think back to Jeremy Bloom, who played wide receiver at Colorado in the early 2000's. He happened to also be an olympic skiier. The NCAA deemed that he would be ineligible if he made money from his skiing career. Archaic is exactly right.
I also hated the NCAA but you need to understand that there are always 3000 people out there looking for a way to cheat for an advantage. That, in my mind is who the NCAA should have gone after instead of the athletes.
College athletics should have been pure in the administration department but they were not. 25% were always looking for the best way to cheat. Tennessee, A&M , Louisville Give them one inch and they took a mile.
Within a month of the NIL ruling, A&M we’re setting up collectives to buy recruits under the guise of NIL and we’re retaining lawyers to fight for the deception. Tom Jurich was one step shy of being a mafia boss. Controlling the press, bribing city councilors, stealing money from the foundation for athletics. Bribing LMPD to keep players out of jail.
The NCAA should have been tough. They should have ran cheating administrations out .
The reason they couldn’t use common sense is these guys were always looking for a loophole.

agreed. dude seems a tad unstable. bullet dodged for sure.
True.
I was focused on on the wife though.
We all heard about her during the coaching search all I can say is " as advertised" lol.
Definitely a "Jersey girl" through and through and the mouth to back it up.
You get that Marissa Tomei "My Cousin Vinny" vibe from her.
In her defense, she has been with him through all his ups and downs.
Just don't see a first lady of UK basketball there.

Yeah Solo Ball wouldn’t be a bad pickup at all. I’d love to snag McNeely but he’s probably going top 10 in the draft lol. Other than Karaban not too many others I’d really want maybe Mahoney.
I’m pretty sure Karaban is out of eligibility (edit: he's a junior so I guess he could do another year, my guess is he's gone given how close a call it was last year), Diarra too. McNeely is definitely gone. Mahoney has been a major disappointment, I think we can do better. Solo Ball and Jalin Stewart (I’m not looking at their roster, I may be thinking of a different big man) are the only ones that interest me.

It is. Adapt or die. He makes millions to deal with it. No one wants to hear him whine. If he doesn’t want to deal with it either quit or hire an assistant GM or something.

Most people after they get caught wish the had not said anything.
Sounds like if he was not caught he would have been ok with it.

That and the fact he got married this past year. I don't know what their children timeline is (with Mormons it's often not long!) and they may want to be closer to family. That combined with BYU's NIL and I definitely wouldn't be surprised if Chandler went back to Utah this year. Hope he stays of course, especially after the way he played the last couple weeks.

I wonder if Hurley means they're already trying to negotiate NIL deals for next year with these players or does he just mean these players did not immediately agree to his lowball NIL offers for next year...

Let all think about it through the eyes of a young person. Most of these kids come from middle class families or worse. The kind of money they can make for playing the game is life changing and altering. Every kid should enter the portal to see if theirs a better offer to be had. I would you would we all would unless your making good money at your dream school. If I’m at Kentucky making 100k my dream school and Louisville offers 200k it’s going to be hard to say no.

He's not married yet.
The BYU NIL may be spread a little thin with so much going to one player.

The biggest reason I think he stays is to promote the Mormon faith on the biggest stage in college basketball. I remember reading an article about him right after Coach Pope got this job where the Mormon Church wanted Collin to go to UK for that very reason. Even though he would have been the highest ranked recruit to go to BYU, his new “mission” would be in Lexington, KY.

Hope that hasn’t changed.

With the kind of dollars I hear thrown around I would think EVERY player would at least consider the transfer portal.

They will. Its how college football works and at the very least there is crossover talk amongst agents. So basketball will follow the same path because its more money every time, even to stay.

Welcome to modern college sports.

I watched the interview. It was interesting how he is so focused on winning titles and nothing else (a sharp contrast from Cal) that Geno had to pull him aside and explain to him that if you are just in it for that you should retire.
