D-League

Good morning folks. A terrific day in the east, really beautiful, cold, crisp October weather.

The baseball playoffs are starting to get interesting. I hope for more days when the Reds are part of it. My son and I were talking about the Reds' new manager on the phone last night. He's a die-hard Reds fan even though he grew up in the DC suburbs and got to maybe one Reds game a year when he was a kid, when we'd go for visits.

What a thread through the generations a ball team can be.

My father, 93, told me a story he'd never told me before last weekend about when he was 23, in 1954, he got back from the Army and for some reason took his dad and my mother's - then his fiancee -- dad to a Reds-Cubs doubleheader. He could remember it clearly. He said a Reds fan was making fun of a Cubs outfielder named Hank Sauer for being so slow-footed. About that time, Sauer hits a home run and my mother's father says, "I guess he won't have to run fast on that one." With just that information I was able to search the boxscores and find out that doubleheader was on April 25, 1954 -- about 18 months before I was born.

My dad also repeated the story of his father going to the 1919 World Series, right after getting back from France in WW1. My grandfather was an excellent ballplayer, but he said he never saw anyone hit a ball the way Shoeless Joe Jackson did in batting practice.

My son remembers going to a game in around 2010 and during BP Joey Votto tossed a ball to one of his cousins.

Of course, my youth included the Big Red Machine days. Too many memories to count. I hope while there is time my son and I get to share a few Reds glory days.

Reminds me of a story Bill James told. A politician (cant recall the name) was complaining about baseball players who had it easy during WW2 and used Hank Bauer as an example. Hank Bauer was a tough Marine who was in several major battles and won medals. The politician when his mistake was pointed out said, "Oh, I misspoke, I meant to say Hank Sauer." Turns out Hank Sauer also saw a lot of action.

That may be why my grandfather liked him Bernie. Sauer had spent much of the 1940s knocking around with the Reds before ending up with the Cubs, so Cincy fans knew him well. That likely triggered both the guy knocking his wheels and my grandfather defending him.

Good morning from ATX. Currently 67°F and clear. Today's high expected around 94°F. Cooler temps coming next Wednesday night.

Happy Friday, y'all.

Good morning folks. Busy work day but wanted to say hello. Cold and clear in the east. SOme people around here posted photos of a freak sighting of Northern Lights last night. Damn, I missed it. Haven't seen those since my Alaska days in the mid-1970s.

Glad its Friday -- and a big one for Kentucky basketball fans.

You all take care.

Good afternoon D, getting ready to watch BBM! Excited again for Kentucky basketball!!! Just want to let the D know that there is a comet that is starting to show up starting tonight, if you look to the west you will see Venus, next to your Uranus, just kidding about Uranus, but Comet Atlas will be to the right of Venus. You can Google Comet Atlas, Sky and Telescope is where I found mine, a map that will show where it is located. They started calling Atlas a great comet, which means it can be seen with the naked eye, we'll see!!!

Haven't dropped by for a little while D-League. Hope all is well with you guys. Cats have a great opportunity after beating Ole Miss. Next 3 games could really define the season. But we can't overlook anyone. Gotta take care of Vandy. Enjoyed Big Blue Madness last night, first time I have watched in years.

Vandy had the ball 42 minutes against Bama. Apparently Bama historic stats have no team ever having the ball against them that long. One reason Vandy got that win. One reason we got the win against Ole Miss was we had the ball for almost 40 minutes. We played keep away.

Be interesting if we see some big plays today or both teams having to drive it down field methodically.

Either way, let's get the win!

Good morning folks. Happy Saturday.

I didn’t get to watch BBM last night. I may go to YouTube and check for replays. Apparently the most excitement in years. And Rick Pitino is back in good graces, making an appearance to a standing O.

Man, I hope Pope can keep this momentum going. An upset of Duke in about a month would be a great first step.

Football Cats can make a splash by beating Giant Killer Vandy. I like UK’s chances.

Heading into town in a bit. Want to see some new exhibits at the Smithsonian. One of the real perks of living in DC.

Hope you all have a good day.

Good morning from ATX. Currently 65°F and clear. Today's high expected around 96°F. Never-ending summer.

Yep, Game Day. Go Cats! I will not post at all during tonight's game. None. Zero. Totally refrain. Plan on commenting after. Go Big Blue!

Contacted Willy, my brothers and cousins and friends in hurricane Milton path yesterday. Heh, eye of hurricane went right over Willy's house. He texted me a picture. Glad all are okay.

Heading out in a few for usual morning hike. Been feeding a couple junk yard dogs at end of our street. They guard auto repair shops and love me.

Wishing y'all an awesome Saturday.

Good morning, D, BBM was great last night, Coach Pope is trying to reunite our fan base and I think he is doing a great job! I wish that they would have announced each year of championships as they came out. To me Pope is a Pitino clone, same drive and excitement, but understands what Kentucky means! I think he will get the players He wants for him, the two Kentucky boys are a start, I hope we get back to a time when we had players lined up wanting to wear Kentucky Blue!!!

Good morning everyone.

I too enjoyed BBM last night. Great overall, but I think they went too long and left a bit hanging at the end. It was sad watching older players rushed onto the court and knowing that you knew who they were (by name) but did not recognize many of them.

Excited about the game tonight. HUGE GAME for both teams trying to do the same thing in the league and this game. Whoever comes out on top will have the upper hand taking that next step towards the future.

I hope everyone enjoys this great weather (well, sorry Austin & maybe Warrior).

Good afternoon all,

Hit the road this morning to the BB's and my grand daughters soccer game. (The last one this season.) and then me, My Darling , and the BB headed over to the Quantico Marine Base Commissary. Stopped off on the way back to eat dinner at Popeye's.

Never got to watch the Cats last night but did follow posts. Sure hope the right UK Football team shows up today. Need a win!

Go CATS!

Speaking of Babe Ruth, any of you ever been to Hot Springs Arkansas? Before teams started going to Florida, it was the hot spot for baseball spring training. Babe Ruth started going there with the Red Sox as a rookie pitcher and he loved it. Baseball during the day and then mineral baths and then the night clubs. I went once years ago and stayed in a hotel that in it's heyday regularly hosted the likes of All Capone.

Good morning from ATX. Currently 71°F and clear. Triple digits forecast today. We may hit 100°F. Summer not yet letting go.

All I can say is Vandy = for real. Offense and defense both reworked. Totally understand how they beat Bama. Sure disappointed our Cats lost again at home. 6 games remain on the schedule. Let's get some wins.

Grabbed BBQ yesterday from Rudy's. Got some pulled pork. Plan on making red beans and rice along with oyster stew today and tomorrow.

Wishing y'all a peaceful Sunday.
