Whitey Herzog, aka The White Rat. Not dissing him, that was his nickname. I did hold a bit of a grudge against him because he traded Ted Simmons.
I may have told it before, but a Herzog-Roger Maris story. They had been teammates prior to Maris getting big with the Yankees and became good friends for life. What would you have expected after Maris breaking the Ruth homer record? Lots of media and endorsements? Well it so happened that Herzog was building a new house that off-season (actually building himself as players didn't make big $ then). Herzog said Roger showed up with tools and a lunch pail first thing every morning to help him build his house and Roger never took a penny in payment.Yes Sir, I remember that. I sure liked Ted Simmons, reminded me of what an All-America looks like. That was always my take about Ted. Never thought much about Whitey at the time being a Tigers fan but he could manage.

Part of Als problem was he had several years played during a period when pitching was dominating baseball. If it makes you feel better, bill James has him rated the ninth best right fielder in the history of baseball. That is ahead of Roberto Clemente. James is the father of sabermetrics. Thanks Sir,
I had not heard that. I knew ball players never made much dough before this current crop (Last thirty or so years.) One memory I had was Al Kaline turning down 100k because he thought he was not worth it.
Al Kaline search turning down 100k
I searched Al Kaline turning down dough than it showed some of his stats.... Just wow in that they were consistent but not crazy good. Just loved watching him field in right. A pure cannon.
An OT tidbit: Greg Maddux won the most Gold Gloves. (I never knew that.)

I love it! HTG.Happy early Thanksgiving! Busy day planned for tomorrow but tonight is all about taking it easy. We'll watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles for the 2nd time this week. Can't get enough of it this time of year.
Great pic! Obviously a successful Thanksgiving.Happy Thanksgiving folks.
A small gathering for us today - my wife, her parents, my daughter, her boyfriend, one cousin of my wife. But we'll have a nice day and we all have a lot to be grateful for. My son is in Austin and got invited to a friend's place. My older daughter is in Kansas CIty and couldn't get away this year, so she'll be with husband's family.
But I'm happy to be home. LIke a lot of you, I did my share of Thanksgivings overseas. My roster includes Saudi Arabia (1990) Mogadishu (1992) Port Au Prince (1994) Kabul (2001) and Baghdad (2003.) Not all were miserable. We found a good restaurant in Petionville, Haiti in 1994. And in 1990, I was at a Marine base in Jubail that George HW Bush was visiting to support the troops and they flew in a pretty good feast from Germany, or so I recall.
Still, I miss the big Thanksgivings of 25-30 family members or so we had at my parent's house for nearly 40 years between the time I left home and my mother got too old to host.
Here's a photo my sister took from about 2017 or so in the aftermath of the feast. That's me on the left, my daughter snuggled against me, a niece, a brother, a brother-in-law and a nephew, and my father on the far right. Good times...
