My sister died in 1996. I often wonder if she would have died so young if she had not smoked.
Folks today don't understand how cigarettes were marketed back in the 50's and 60's. Smoking was the cool thing to do and the marketing worked by hooking millions of folks.
What bothers me now is the pro-pot guys are lying to folks and telling them that pot is harmless. Well it ain't, plus you are putting hydrocarbons into your lungs and it is not even filtered. Sometimes our culture screws things up.
My Dad has smoked 70 years. Can't breathe but sits and watches birds out of his porch window while they burn then takes another puff whenever he wants. The family has grown tobacco since they settled along Potobaco Creek with the Potobaco Indians. I was taught as a child (50s & 60s) that tobacco use causes lung-cancer. Pop was kicked off Manual's basketball team in 1950 for smoking. I did not smoke until I was 21. I became addicted by accident. I had this stunning beautiful girl friend at UK. She liked to smoke T
areytons. I loved that she chose to live in a halter top, but she had no pockets so I carried her cigarettes in my shirt pocket.

Sometimes I would light them for her. Yeah, I was whupped. Subject for a different post. Anyway, one day she ran off with one of my friends. Took my dog and left me with a bad habit. It was twenty years later I quit to show my teenage kids that to change things, make a decision.
Now about pot. It's about freedom, not being smart. Pot (drugs in general), alcohol, tobacco, pot, whatever are obviously, at least to me, a scourge of our free society. I for one, would rather not live in an alternative. Seems that everyone who wants them has them. That doesn't deny the horrific effects of substance abuse but where does that stop. Does that include food? Meat? SodaPop? Who judges? The lunatics who make the most noise? It's the personal responsibility of liberty and includes a requirement of discipline. Governmental responsibility is about fact and justice.
Kind of like kids, they belong to their parents, always have, not the government. Protecting our children is never to be neglected with communities where zoning, restrictions, and prohibitions are potential solutions. Want to protect kids from drugs is easy. Tell them the truth. Confiscate the wealth of those who profit from the marketing of deception.
