So, this older man was hit by a car or truck on his bicycle. The police pulled up and the old guy was trying to get his stuff together and looking for his wallet when the cop decided to bash his head against the blacktop for not listening to him.

The older fellow had a brain bleed and spent the night in jail for being intoxicated. There are other videos on this. He was not intoxicated. He died of a stroke shortly afterward related to the policeman attacking him. The police did a bang up internal investigation on this and found no wrongdoing. The district attorney or county attorney or whatever in Texas followed up with his own investigation and the policeman was arrested. He is still awaiting trial. If you need someone for the jury, I'm available.

I am generally speaking pro cop. I was a military policeman and at the time ((probably still is) a ticket to a job on any police force in the USA. There are good and bad people in police work, just like any other job. There was a personality difference in the military cops who wanted to be a cop as a civilian and those who did not. There was one guy who kept a chart in his locker, On one side was a list of all the ranks, on the other side was all the possible things he could write someone up on. His goal was to get check marks in every box. He was over the top in everything, but his superiors loved him because he had the most arrests, tickets and etc.

There were exhaustive threads covering this issue when Breonna Taylor was killed in self defense while attacking police in her home in the middle of the night. Paddock conclusions were that it was absolutely necessary and all anyone ever has to do is comply. Are there a few bad apples scattered few and far between among our valiant police forces? Well, no, of course there’s not and we should never say such slanderous things.

There’s shitty everything. There’s shitty bartenders. Shitty waiters. Shitty plumbers. Shitty cops. Nobody’s perfect.

Shitty cops shouldn’t be cops.
Most of those are meaningless to me. I don't care.

Two policemen surrounding my vehicle with their hands on their weapons because I have a headlight out bothers me. I should not be under threat of death because my headlight is burned out.

Word. There are good and bad people in any job, but considering the EVER PRESENT danger that police officers are in, they will always get a LOT more leeway with me, even if they made what later turned out to be the wrong decision. I haven't read anything on this case, so I won't offer an opinion on it, but AGAIN, law enforcement officers, at the street level/initial point of contact are going to get a LOT of rope, when it comes to me. (edited to clarify that in cases where it is CLEAR that they were in the wrong, they should be fired/prosecuted)

The cop that bashes the man's head against the ground, I would give him 8 feet of rope from a 12 foot oak branch.

Like I said, I wasn't commenting on this particular story. I didn't even read it. I was making a generalized comment about law enforcement officers. I never meant to imply that, blanket statement, cops should be able operate with impugnity.

I haven't even watched the video, but I know there are bad cops and good cops because I worked with both. I preferred security over law enforcement because most of the time you knew who the bad guys were. Getting and keeping good cops is a huge problem. You can only hire people from those who apply for the job and who wants the job? I was getting ready to go to Viet Nam and they came to our base asking for people to volunteer to go into law enforcement with a huge list of major cities to choose from. All we had to do was sign a contract and we would get an immediate honorable discharge and free airfare to the chosen city. Not one cop on the base accepted. People chose the chance of Viet Nam over being a cop. How are you going to get the best people to take the job? I honestly don't see a good answer.

Part of the problem is that there are just too damn many laws. And instead of dealing with the criminal elements we make everyday occurrences criminal.

This. This right here. Might be the number 1 issue. Cops aren't there to serve and protect. They are agents of the state used to strong arm citizens to make money for the government.

Police ranks will likely be filled to some extent - with non-US citizens within 2-3 yrs IMO

"Resident Alien" status will qualify one for both police AND active duty military service IMO

The institution of local police and local accountability is under attack like many other institutions & frameworks

Aside tm certain bad actors within the ranks - I think we can also argue the politicians in many urban areas AND the law itself - is radically changing

So - bad cops + expanding the range and type of crimes they can pursue - DROPPING several types of criminal punishment and releasing violent offenders - while our half-rate marxist rabble scream and call for defunding them

You will probably see a rise in "community policing" and police type interdiction for."mental health" reasons

Thats MO anyway -

Remember when that Somalian cop killed that woman in Minnesota who had called them? He was in the passenger side and shot her. How crazy is that? Of course that guy ended up doing hardly any time.

There’s a lot of cops that are psychopaths and desire to hurt people and want power. They’re never held accountable by their union.

I have/had a few cops in my family. They're the ones you want if you get pulled over. I've had more than a few run ins with LEOs. Not once was I ever nervous or angry. If you aren't doing anything wrong just comply and be nice and that's it. Now, there are a few a$$hat cops around but in my experience it's few and far between. FWIW, I didn't watch the above video.

Ok, we can stop the cop bashing anytime now. Let's see where defunding the police led us
We have to have cops. Like in any job, there are good and bad ones. How do you be sure you get only good ones? Who wants the job with all the bad stuff in today's world? You can only hire from those who apply. More money? I am not so sure that will only attract the best. It is a potentially difficult job in an imperfect world. Not sure there is an answer that will satisfy everyone.

Okay that’s murder.

Deputy Shane Iverson was not charged. Pulled a guy over for supposedly running a stop sign. Escalated the situation. Was never attacked. Shot a guy in the back.

Zero doubts the majority of cops are psychos who want to hurt you.
It was deemed a justified shooting. Apparently, the county has many braindead citizens. He needs to be prosecuted federally. That was one of the worst I have seen. The kid was just confused and not fighting back as some claimed. The cop took him to the ground.

My interest in this got a lot higher back in the fall when I was pulled over for having a headlight out. Multiple police came and one shined a light through my vehicle as he had his hand on his weapon. I had only complied with them to that point. After that, I lost my cool somewhat because I am unsure why the second cop needed to have his hand on his weapon for me having a headlight out.

Most cops (more than 90%) have the big me little you attitude.

Shane Iverson needs a roomamte in a prison cell.

No.

Small towns with military equipment to police with is ridiculous. It smells of a future police state.

Reforming the laws is the first step. There are multiple videos here of guys getting their heads smashed in for Jaywalking. Why is Jaywalking even a law? We need to get lots of laws off the books and we can start there.

Local governments want all these laws as a source of revenue.

I used to drive through the Cairo IL area 2 or 3 times a week. The city was broke and they would get you for one mph over the limit. It is where Ky, IL and Mo meet, so they'd get a lot of out of town people who would see paying the fine a better option than fighting it.

I know it well. Only source of revenue there.

I was pulled over in Johnson City TN for driving with my lights off by accident. The very same scenario you mentioned played out. Once it was obvious I was compliant, the environment changed. It was a pleasant exchange and I was let off with a warning. Cops are up against anything. You have to put yourselves in their shoes

Police are given enormous authority over fellow citizens.

Police departments need to do a better job on the hiring side to screen out weirdos.

There is a distinct lack of accountability due to the blue wall of silence, the Fraternal Order of Police currying political favor, and the fact that prosecutors work hand in hand with the police on case. Hence, no one wants to upset the apple cart too much.

Never trust any cop, but also treat them with respect and you'll usually be just fine.

I've had familiy in LE for years. I've done citizen's academies for that reason, and two, they're kinda fun. I've done the K9 challenge with both the new pups and the veteran dogs that will take your arm off (bite sleeve of course). I didn't do the taser mainly due to heart issues in my family. I've fired weapons, done the shoot or no shoot trainings. It's all informative, interesting, and fun.

All that being said, cops have my respect. However, from family being in LE at one time or another, I know second hand there are very shitty cops. I have sadly dealt first hand with a shitty cop. I did comply and got out with a warning. Yet, I didn't feel any less like a major criminal over a very minor moving violation and I did have to also wonder if my skin color did play a factor. Some people just shouldn't be LEOs, period. And if you need proof of that, look at that horrible beating of a handcuffed man in a NY jail.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...ooks-fatal-beating-prison-probed/77350183007/

I'm a supporter of LEOs. However, I support the Constitution and law above ANY human. No man in this country is above the law, period. Badge or not. And in fact, in my book, LEOs should be MORE upstanding than the average citizen, not less. I believe in increased penalties for cops that knowingly break the law. They are supposed to be moral and upstanding. Part of the problem with our issues with police these days are the "us vs them" mentality. Don't get me wrong, LEOs must be vigilant and ready if the need arises. But if you start approaching every person as an absolute threat/criminal, guess what happens? You start becoming extremely paranoid and fearful and you see every person as a threat to your life. 1) That's not a very effective way to be a LEO and 2) that's not a very good way to live. Officers used to be seen, for the most part, as protectors and public servants. Now we see a lot of them as overhanded government enforcers. Part of that is due to increased crime and the need for police to be properly armed. But the other part is just the way laws are being enforced. You see too much ticky-tack enforcement on things while people arrested for their fourth DUIs go home or government officials caught breaking the law get specil treatment. People don't feel like there equality under the law. And that extends down to the perception of LEOs, whether they are good or crap.

Bottom line, some people have NO business being officers. Whether due to personality, mental issues, health, or just plain incompetence.

Support the good ones. Throw the book at the bad ones. Put real criminals behind bars and keep them there.
Policing will improve. Community relations with police will improve. Our society will improve. But only if we are all truly equal under the law.

I will say it depends on the availability of near by help too. Sure small towns don't need a lot, but I can see having one armored vehicle just in case. But it should only be used when absolutely needed. Don't forget sadly a lot of these small towns have turned into havens for meth dealers or other drug kingpins. Smaller area, less attention. The issue is when the cops do need to respond to them and they are out gunned. Nobody wants that. So, there's a balance there.

Sadly, the days of Mayberry are gone.

There are numerous videos of police showing up at the wrong place or getting the wrong person and yet they are arrested, beaten or terminated anyway.

Top flight police work here.

Some of the details in the story are off a little but yahoo has a good version of story. Neighbors camera caught it. Police are outside banging on door, they breakthrough and kill him because he had a gun pointed at them. He probably had a gun pointed at them because he had no idea who was banging on his door at midnight.

The warrant was being served over a stolen weed eater. The warrant was served at 11:54 pm. This is just like the Louisville case. There won't be the same national outrage though.

Before everyone jumps to conclusions, do we know if the victim had any drugs in their system. The toxicology report will let us know if any drugs or alcohol was consumed within the past 2 weeks. That for sure will be released by the police to the media. Maybe the bullets only exacerbated their effect.
