Anyone know of any civil war family? my 5x great grandpa Richard Minchley signed up with the 28thTN Infantry at 45 in 1861 and survived the war. He fought against my two uncles on my great grandmas side LTs Daniel and Samuel Stout of the 9thKY Infantry. Anyone else have any cool stories?

I also had tons of cousins and uncles in NC who fought with Lee at all of the major eastern theater battles. Few died there.

The guys on D-League have a lot of CW ancestors' history.

Me, my 2X grandpa, Pvt in H Company of the 28th OH, was shot thru the head in the midsize Battle of Piedmont VA on June 5, 1864. Buried at Staunton VA National Cemetery. Three years enlistment would have been up in August.

DW's great-grandpa from Danville area rode in the 6th KY Cavalry under John Hunt Morgan in his raid across southern IN & OH. Was captured trying to cross the Ohio back into VA/WV. Ultimately paroled.

My 3rd Great Grandfather, Corporal Isaac Mitchell, was killed by Nathan Bedford Forrest at the Battle of Sacramento. My Great Great Grandfather was hanged after the war for going back in after Donelson surrender. I think the rest survived. My Great Grandfather went in at 16 in a rich man's place.

Oh I know! You guys are just so reasonable and middle of the road. Your dumbass compared the cause of American revolution to the cause of the civil war. You say a bunch of thinly veiled racist shit and then act outraged when called on it.
Uhhhhhhhhhh? what do I say that's racist? You guys came in here calling people's family traitors 150 years after they died. Nice one Rog, you really showed them bro! Don't forget your trip to whole foods later. Purple haired fat kid behind a keyboard.

Well I didn't say that but yeah they were traitors. And you people are all the same, you walk right up to the line while still being able to plausibly deny it. Besides who called you a racist?

Anybody messing with someone over what their family did five generations ago ought to seriously get some perspective. I’ve got family that is five generations away from subsistence farming on the Steppes. Zero connection to that ish. Get over yourself. History is cool as hell and people’s stories should be preserved.

Tombstone of my maternal great-great-great grandfather at the Federal Cemetery in Knoxville, TN. Died during Civil War in while serving with Union Army after Battle of Knoxville. I'll never listen to another GD word from our resident trolls and I plan on to be buried near him (yes, I'm eligible).

I am a direct descendant from him though. His youngest daughter was my Great-Great-Great grandmother. He enlisted at 45 years old in 1861. And fought at Franklin, Chickamauga, Shiloh, and opposed Sherman's march. Tough SOB and I'm proud of him.

It’s amazing. I’m talking to the dipshits that we’re giving you grief.

I had an uncle and two cousins who manned artillery at Vicksburg (For the CSA) Looks like your Grandpa was there on the union side.

Yep, he was Union. He saw a ton of combat but he was wounded and out of action for several months in 1863, including the battles at Vicksburg.

He was captured at the battle of Mansfield, Louisiana, on April 8, 1864, and was a POW at Tyler, Texas, from April, 1864 until October, 1864. He mustered out on January 26, 1865, at Louisville.

You know its crazy. Had General Polk not invaded Kentucky and waited a few more months for the US army to invade Kentucky would have swung to the confederacy.

From what I gather, My Great-Great-Great grandmother on Confederate side was forced to marry down to a much younger man because her first husband was KIA at Gettysburg fighting on the rebel side. Grandma mentioned it once, as I recall. She lived 1898-1993. Lots of hard feelings that survive to this day.
I had 3-4 cousins die at gettysburg. Most of them were in picketts charge. 23, 26, and 22nd NC. I know vicksburg didn't celebrate the 4th or fly an American flag until WW1.

Rogcats great great grandfather that lived in the 1800s had lots of black and lesbian friends he used to hang out with so it’s all good.

Not to start a fight, but Grant was in Western KY in Sept 1861 already and larger KY population areas along the OH River further north were never strong Confed supporters due to their river commerce focus. Neither were the eastern mountain areas. Give Confeds Lex (maybe) & south & west from there. Not enough. Net, I don't see how KY would have ever swung Confed.

Did Biden tell you this ? 😂🍺

Not civil war, but I have my direct grandfather and uncle on my Dads side who were Revolutionary War soldiers. The Uncle fought at Brandywine and Cowpens, and also was at Yorktown under Gen Washington to witness the British surrender . After the war he was given 10O acres for his service in what is now Lewis County KY, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I enjoy Rev War stuff more than CW. None of my ancestors here that early though (all arrived 1818-1857.). DW's 3X or4X gr-grandfather was an Irish immigrant in his late teens who fought in GW's sharpshooter company, mainly in NJ. However, they were detached to go & fight at Saratoga.

I do not have an ancestor not in the USA by 1775. Timelines on ancestry shows a couple coming between 1750 and 1775. By 1700, over half my ancestors at the time were in mainly Virginia and North Carolina.

While I do agree with that ^^^^^^...

...it is an often forgotten fact that Frankfort was the only Union state capital to be captured by the confederate army during the Civil War...which they did in the Fall of 1862. They only held it for about a month but they did “officially” swear in a governor.

So for a month or so the state of Kentucky was technically under confederate “control”. While there were several secessionists in Frankfort at the time that supported the coup...most of the citizens & the bulk of the state government officials supported the North.
