College basketball is no more.

Yeah, let's go back to no shot clock. No 3pt line. No freshman eligible. Ahhh yes, the good old days. Might as well go back to 2 refs a game too. Put UK games back on delayed broadcast.

Welcome to the end of the thread where what you said has nothing to do with the topic. Let's just let it rest that some don't mind the fact players leave without that much investment into the program and some do. In my view it's killing the overall college game.

Duh.

It has been over for more than a week now. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

In all seriousness, it's just another evolution. The OAD is an NBA issue, but NCAA coaches either must embrace it or take the chance of hoping the old way still works.

All sports evolve. 25 years ago, football was 3 yards and a cloud of dust on offense + defenses spearing people with their helmets in an exciting 10-7 contest. Now, it's spread offenses and player safety.

Twenty-five years ago, the NBA was rasslin' on hardwood with no real flow to the games, 7-footers were commodities and the game ran through the post; Now the skill level is higher, and shooting and spacing are far more valuable than seeing who can commit the hardest foul.

Explain how it has "killed" the college game. Do you mind when young college golfers go pro after one year? How about tennis players? What about high school players going straight to minor leagues on MLB? Has that also killed those sports? If so, how?

Killed" is past tense. Killling, what I said, is the game is being water down with players like Simmons, ball, etc. it doesn't matter to them about tradition of their schools or if they lay an egg in the last game. Luckily we have a coach that tries to instill that in them the tradition of uk basketball, which right now is overshadowed by the love fest of if we get bamba.

I noticed you didn't answer one question. Maybe you and Bob Knight can get together and talk about how good things used to be.

In the 87-88 season, the NBA salary cap was $6M. In 97-98 it was $27M. In 07-08 it was $56M. Next season, it's $102M. That means the money per roster spot has gone from $400k (about $850 factoring in inflation) to $6M. That's a huge draw.

College basketball isn't dead, but it's pretty easy to see why top talent started skipping college altogether, and now try to get pro as soon as possible. Get a 2 year contract and you'll make as much money as the average person makes in a 40 year career.
That's why I don't watch the NBA

I've said for a long time that the elephant in the room with regard to the NCAA and major college basketball and football is the total hypocrisy of it. That these particular 'products,' specifically elite programs, are still being presented as an offshoot of academics is laughable and insulting. The ruse is about over though as it's become almost impossible to ignore what is really going on.

That doesn't mean I don't like watching these products, especially UK, because I do. But you are missing the point if you insist on pretending your favorite school happens to have a sports team you like. In many ways, elite sports programs have become much bigger and more powerful than the schools they represent.

On a related note: Calipari, as a by-product of his success in recruiting - all within the stupid, hypocritical rules currently in place - is leading the way in exposing the NCAA (in basketball, anyway) for what it is. And the NCAA can't bend much more before it breaks.

Great post!
