Coen Returning According to KSR

Coen left a $1.2 million contract with an excalator at UK to take half that much in LA. It was a long term business decision and it didn't go well for him, but now he gets an even better opportunity in Lexington. Football is a volatile, unpredictable game.
And California taxes you for every breath of air you take! Liam will keep a lot more of his money in Kentucky.

I'm sure someone can make a rational case that UK could have hired a more experienced or a more loyal OC. But I think Liam Coen coming back is very good news for us. I want to see what his new contract says about terms and duration. There is no reason why Coen or anyone else should surrender their long term ambition to be a head coach. But Coen is young, and Lexington is a good place to raise his family. Judging by the differences in our offensive production in 2021 vs. 2022, this looks like a really good move. If Coen had not taken Sean McVay's offer a year ago, none of this would be an issue now. Learning experience for Coen, and probably for Stoops and Marrow too. Now, let's get our offense back on track.

I wonder if Coen and Boulware will coach in the MCB.
Yes, young, creative, modern in his approach. I think this is great for us. If he's back I no longer worry about losing any of our receiving corp.

I can tell you for a FACT (and not saying who or how I know) but his ultimate goal in the NEAR NEAR future is to be a head coach , wherever that may be .
As would be expected but he has some learning to do first. He just found out what rushing can do to your career. I think we get a few years this time. At that point he would probably be ready.

Guess we find out if you can ever go home again. Was not true for Coen in LA the second time.

I view these things more like coin flips than sure things. If they hit on quality portal targets - and improve the Jimmy’s and Joe’s - I’ll feel more like this is inevitably a good thing. If Coen had last years OL and Levis injuries the offense would still have been a step back from 2021.
There is absolutely no way you can know that for sure.

I actually think if Coen would have stayed, we would have been playing Georgia for SEC East championship.

Scangerello and his complicated scheme was a death knoll for the offense.

This should stop the exodus of transfers from our offense unless they have been recruited over (as some have been). Not only that, but I expect Coen to be a significant recruiting asset. Scangarello was not.

Hmmm...you would have still had the same OL personnel (most likely), CRod's suspension, Levis' injuries impacting his mobility, the issue's at long-snapper, and no consistent pass rushers. I don't think I'd go that far, but would agree with beating Ole Miss, SCAR, and Vandy. UGA and UT, with a healthy Hooker, would have been high hurdles.

True but I think that's why Yenser hasn't been fired. Scan made things too complicated and it just never worked. The OC change may have huge OL implications.

Seems like Cummings had a lot more targets under Coen. Don’t know if that’s true, note my use of “seems”
Coen’s scheme definitely had more uses for him it seemed. Scang used a more traditional approach to TE and Cummings is not a traditional style TE.

I know one thing. I bet the Barion Brown/Jordan Anthony show is about to begin. Speed kills and with Dane's great hands, height and route running combined with the other two's speed, the pressure we could put on secondary's is gonna be crazy. Jordan, if he is in fact a good receiver and not just fast, will be perfect in the slot. The other 2 are already great.

This isn't how it works.

Good OC's move on. Fast. To bigger and better jobs.

The KEY is having a protege on-staff, learning the system, developing nuances but able to transition into when an OC leaves. This is how good offenses sustain year over year.
This is truly important.

You’d think with Coen coming back and staying a couple years that Woodward would be in line for that job when Liam leaves.
He was his choice for WR when he came the first time and Woodward is a great recruiter.

Short and Long term this is awesome news!

All this talk of the need for continuity. I thought Scangarello was going to be a great hire, but in retrospect taking an NFL OC was an unnecessary risk. Once Stoops established that he would run a more high-powered offense, he should have had lots of experienced college OCs ready to come here.

There may have been better candidates available, we will never know. But, Coen is a known quantity and that's important. Hiring him also keeps the offense in place. Hopefully we add the right guy via the portal to run the LC offense. If that is the Mertz (sp?) guy from Whisky, so be it.

Coen didn't have a lot to work with at WR when he was here before. Had to over utilize Robinson. It will be super interesting to see what it looks like him having T Robinson, Key, B Brown, Anthony, White, A Brown and Palmer to use. That is a ton of speed and talent.

It would be interesting to know the behind the scenes stories to this. When Coen was contacted, when he said yes, what the rams said, and other details.

Maye said that it is a rumor he is leaving. Said he loves NC.
I'd think that too. Dad is an ex-UNC QB, brother played basketball there. The rumor of Mayne going in the portal probably stemmed from a comment Mack Brown made last week...that one of his players(I'd assume Maye) said he was being offered a "crazy amount of money to transfer." I imagine he stays.

Read what you just acknowledged. If we had beaten Ole Miss, SC, and lost to UT, we would have been playing GA for SEC East championship. Exactly what I said.

He just made Baker look like a HOFer.

Stoops has his number 1 target.

No excuses. Stoops needs to reach a new ceiling in the next 3 years without falling below this year in the process. Happy for all that this worked out ...let's go win some gosh darn games.

Anytime you have successful assistants other teams are going to come after them. AU came after 3 of our defensive coaches and 1 offensive coach. Their wives said no way were they working with Freeze.
look how many schools came after Kirby when he was at Alabama
he let it be known UGA was the only school he was leaving Bama/Saban for

So is he coming or not? Some say yes and others say no and nothing seems to be set in stone.
I think this is the case of when there’s smoke you’ve got a fire. Seems like so much hype around this that Coen or UK would’ve come out and said this was a false story couple hours ago if this wasn’t happening.

We need continuity at the OC. It cant be a revolving door. If our head coach is not offensive minded then we need an OC who can give us that identity and stick with it
You can't ask a proven, young NFL OC who wants to be an NFL head coach, to stay as a College OC or compromise their dreams. You provide them with what you need to make your team better NOW, and thank them when they move on.

I had a job at a major hospital in Eastern Kentucky as a VP. for 3 months. That was when the COO informed me that I was no longer going to be allowed to return to Lexington every other weekend to be with my family, even though I negotiated that with the CEO. Only job I have ever quit with no notice at all.

Funny enough, my employer in Akron has no issue with the exact same travel schedule. It has never been an issue for over 5 years, just like we won't have an issue if Coen only stays one season.

Coen is more important than any recruit as you can see what he did with Wandale, a younger Levis and better Oline was light years what Scang did with better WR core, same RB, older Levis and less Oline.

If we can get a RB in here, the right QB portal and one tackle that is legit.....we could go back to 32-ish pts a game and with the D we've got coming back.....that is a dangerous team even with a tougher schedule.

Yeah; I simulated out the season for all and so Hooker not getting freak injured, and UT folding, but I take your point! Fair enough!

(Also wish I said “probably” sweep those teams in a resimulated 2022 since running table with that OL seems improbable but ya know)

When will we see something official? So far we have a tweet from Chris Mortenson

I wonder too. I prefer something of the "official" nature before I get too excited. But at least there's something on the national level instead of these local KY wannabes.
