Coach "K" ing speaks about one and done...

So, he hasn't changed his recruiting strategy, it's the culture and the players that have. Mkay.

i agree with him. he's always recruited the best and gets many of them, same as our coach. every coach would love to have a roster of 5 stars every year, except r3stax maybe. he prefers to recruit luavel men.

Just because that national media is too dumb and too addicted to an easy narrative doesn't mean fans who pay attention should be.

K has recruited plenty of OAD talent since the start of OAD. Barnes, Bazz, Wall, Parker, Randle, Tarc, Knight, McRoberts, Livingston, Wright... nothing there has changed in who Duke recruits. Who COMMITS to Duke might be slightly different, but again... last year was the FIRST YEAR IN HISTORY that Duke had more than a SINGLE OAD player. This year likely won't change that.

God, I feel like this has to be repeated over and over, and yet still some people don't hear it. K's approach to recruiting and OADs hasn't changed just because the idiot media has said so, and you guys, with your understanding of recruiting and Cal's own experiences with the OADs, should see this very easily.

I know BBN is maybe a bit sensitive about K and OADs and all of this silly narrative, but I really don't get why this whole "K suddenly does OADs!" non-story has caught on with any basketball fan who is in any way intelligent or educated.

^ It is known that K was very upset that Avery was leaving early, and when Parker committed to Duke he said he didn't pick UK because of our OAD philosophy. Obviously, it wasn't something K was open to and likely used in recruiting pitches. Now he's fine with it. So, yeah his approach has changed.

K was likely upset because he didn't expect Avery to go. It had nothing to do with OAD... I mean, Will was a sophomore. As for Parker... he was a OAD. He would have been a OAD anywhere he went. K was pretty open from the start that he expected Jabari to be gone. Sure, K and Cal might recruit using different language and all, but there is nothing in that quote that indicates that K has changed from what he used to do... he has always used an "unpack your bag and enjoy and experience everything you have here" approach, rather than a "We are a your next step to the league" approach... maybe THAT is a difference from the UK OAD pitch, but that isn't a CHANGE from K has always said.

The two things you pointed out don't actually speak to a change in K's philosophy or recruiting.

And no smart person in history has said K invented OAD. I get that you guys are SUPER sensitive about this, and that you hate this manufactured narrative about K dominating OADs, but it is a completely invented narrative that is not supported by a single thing that K, Duke, or any Duke fans have ever said. If you want to be pissed, be pissed at the shoddy reporting, not pissed at Duke or K or whatever... and you should still understand that K hasn't really changed all that much in how he recruits, and he isn't copying Cal or anything.

This is the most bizarre topic, to me. I've never seen such a disconnect between what actually happens/who is actually recruited and the storyline.

Hey thanks for letting us know who we should be pissed at.
JK, I don't really care but it is an interesting topic.

coach K has always recruited elite talent...has the wins and rings to prove it...

up until very recently...it wasn't uncommon or frowned upon if elite talent stayed 3-4 years...so K got a lot of guys to stay that probably could have left...

...but yes, I would agree that because Duke is now cranking out the OADs it has become a bit more acceptable tot he mainstream...

it no long Cal running a mercenary operation...it's K doing great things for young men and giving them an incredible opportunity...

I think one thing that hasn't been pointed out by anyone in this thread yet is Krzyzewski isn't that far from the end of the line (I see him at Duke for another 5 to 7 years), which is also making him more open to taking more OAD type of players in addition to recruiting players such as Quinn Cook, Matt Jones, Amile Jefferson, Kennard, Plumlee, etc. who can develop over that 3 or 4 year period and become an excellent senior as Quinn did or key glue guys/role players like Jones and Jefferson have.
