CI Wrestling Thread #56

I’ve watched very little of her ROH match work outside of PPVs, but the PPV matches have generally been amongst the best women’s matches in North America.

From the clips I have seen on YouTube and social media, the story with Billie Starkz has been entertaining. Though I’ve not been able to follow it as closely since ditching Twitter for Bluesky.

Up until recently when weekly ROH has allegedly gotten better from what regular viewers say, the Athena-Billie stuff has largely been the only reason for anyone to watch the ROH weekly product. She’s essentially been the face of the brand ever since she started working there full time.
If it’s been that good why wasn’t in on aew tv instead of roh?

At least they’ve put for effort into collision so it’s not just more or less filler.

Toni storm has been featured on dynamite and collision as well as Sasha.

If there’s a compelling angle surely it will get due tv time? That’s how the business works.
And it got the TV time it needed, in ROH. That's how the business works.

Same reason why the best women's work in WWE is happening in NXT and not on Raw or Smackdown.

Kevin Knight is officially All Elite, after having interest across the wrestling world.

Fightful Select reported in early January that Kevin Knight's deal had expired the week of NJPW Wrestle Kingdom, resulting in his title loss on the show. We were told during that period that New Japan Pro Wrestling was very interested in retaining Knight, but that many expected him to look to land in a company in the United States.

Knight met with Tony Khan and Rocky Romero early in February around the time he worked an ROH taping where he wrestled AR Fox to a time limit draw. Around that time he was also looking to speak with WWE.

PWinsider had noted that he had an "invited WWE tryout." We've not confirmed that as of yet, or if the terminology implies a private WWE tryout or if he attended. When Fightful inquired with Performance Center sources, one longtime staff member said "I'm not sure what more they needed to see. He wrestled in New Japan, CMLL, AEW, Ring of Honor, MLW and TNA. There are looks at this guy on every other stage but ours. Glad we were at least trying though." We can confirm WWE had interest, and we were told he would have likely started in NXT had he been signed.

We spoke to sources in TNA and other companies, but they believed that he wasn't returning unless he signed with WWE. Knight wrestled seven matches there between January and March last year. Knight also worked four MLW dates between September and November.

From the March 27 2025 edition of Wrestling Observer radio. around the 48:45 mark, when discussing the backstage segment with Thunder Rosa on Dynamite and the later match where she was beaten.

He also very briefly compared her to Hulk Hogan, then immediately backtracked saying he didn’t want to say that because she’s not as big as Hogan. But the fact that it even crossed his mind for a millisecond is pretty incredible praise.

“Toni Storm is like a superstar at this point…

There’s a difference between your A1 star and a star, and Toni is now an A1 star. She’s now like Dusty Rhodes, or Hulk Hogan… I don’t want to say Hulk Hogan, because that’s probably too big.

But she’s a big frickin’ star”

Probably, he says. Probably.

And every wrestling fan over the age of 40 rolled their eyes into a new dimension. Is Storm great? Of course. But in no way is Toni Storm in the same universe as Hulk Hogan or Dusty for that manner. Good gravy, when Meltzer goes all in, he really goes full throttle for clicks. In a year Big Bill will be Andre the Giant and Orange Cassidy will be Shawn Michaels.

oh and for the record, I don’t care if WWE mentions AEW and vice versa. I always hated when WWE would act like wrestling never existed outside of what they owned. People who get all fussy about it need to grow up.

We’ve got some unofficial AEW Dynamite on Max numbers. Max + TNT viewership has them over a million. Though TNT’s numbers are live+same day while these Max numbers are live+24 hours.

WWE last ran the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle in September and drew over 13K. Back in April 2023 they did 10.5K there

2 weeks out from their return to the arena and they are only at 7.2K with much of the hard cam side not even being opened

This is what the September show looked like two weeks out

Really enjoyed that show, finally. I wanna live somewhere where Raw is on at 3 or 4pm every week.

Said it once and will say again: AEW wanted to be seen as competition and now WWE sees them as such. What did you think was going to happen next? Triple H and current talent just aren't dumb enough to literally say "AEW" or "Tony Khan" on their tv. AEW did lots of crowing towards WWE/NXT over the years. Some of it fun, some of it cringy. They barked at WWE constantly. Well, WWE knows they exist and if you thought they'd play nice, esp. after all the prodding from Tony, I don't know what to tell ya.

Far as references go, Punk should probably retire his and move on. With Cody, it's a part of his story and it's going to be used. Stardust was awful, he left and created something that instantly became the number two promotion, was rejected by his creation, then came back home and was welcomed as a hero. Most of that happening after the death of his father, a legend.

I'd like more info rather than "sources" from a guy obsessed with Vince's sex crimes on those Max numbers.

It'd be great if true but I'm supposed to believe an additional half million people have been watching AEW via Max weekly? This as the dedicated fans have repeatedly said the main storyline is trash and the weekly shows aren't that important. If those numbers were true, Tony would know. And if Tony knew, he'd be screaming it from a mountaintop nonstop.

Don't pee on a man's leg and tell him it's raining.
