CI Wrestling Thread #56

WWE forgot the apostrophe so it reads as “I want give up”

WWE has heat with Mexico now

Gable doing the El Grande Americano comedy gimmick pretending he’s not himself but a Lucha Libre legend has not gone over well with many fans in Mexico and Latin America. I think WWE just saw it as comedy, not realizing that in Mexico in particular, there is a very negative connotation of the U.S. due to the government’s actions perceived as anti-Mexican. Donald Trump wanting to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America is a lightning rod. WWE billing Grande Americano from the Gulf of America as comedy rubbed salt in the wound. Ernesto Ocampo, Editor-in-Chief of Super Luchas, wrote, “This is an insult on many levels, both to Mexican wrestling and to Mexico itself. They could have left out the ‘Gulf of America’ reference and at least tried to write the character’s name in proper Spanish.”

If I was Ryan Nemeth’s lawyer I’d be dropping him as a client.

Ryan Nemeth, an active TNA wrestler, in lawsuit: I was blackballed from wrestling.

Ryan Nemeth in interview: I was offered a new AEW contract but turned it down.

I was bummed he was only at Lexington comic con for one day so I had to miss him :/
He’ll still be doing meet and greets after this year, he just won’t be doing it with face paint anymore. Though I imagine he’ll be gradually winding down on doing that too, one of the big appeals for pictures is the face paint, after all.

Might as well cut loose - didn’t help they added time to fenix - wwe prob gave him a bigger push b/c of what AEW did.
4d chess game going on.
They will always give an ex-AEW person a big push, even lame ass Lexis King and Shawn Spears.

Same reason why AEW will always give an ex-WWE person a big push. Even lameasses like Ruby Soho.

It’s every bit as much of a recruiting pitch to future free agents as it is just trying to present the best product possible. You can ever argue doing it for everyone is actually detrimental to providing the best possible product when the talent isn’t deserving of the push.

WON: Hurt Syndicate vs Archer and Cage was originally planned for AEW Dynasty PPV, but they had to pivot to new challengers going with Big Bill & Bryan Keith.

This is because Brian Cage suffered a knee injury on an independent show.

At least Tiffany’s promo was solid last night - Charlotte just sucks the life out of everything with her matches it’s like she’s just going through the motions

So it turns out “main event” jey uso will not be main eventing at wrestlemania.
Shouldn’t be, they devalued the match by giving it away on free tv earlier this year and seems like it wasn’t even a particularly good match on top of that. A WrestleMania main event supposed to be bigger than a rematch of a mediocre free tv match.

For all the “AEW is too old” complaints during the run of the Moxley-Cope program, WrestleMania is about to be main evented by…

48-year-old John Cena
46-year-old CM Punk
40-year-old Roman Reigns
39-year-old Cody Rhodes
39-year-old Seth Rollins

I rounded up on Cena, Roman, and Rollins because they all have birthdays within approximately a month after Mania.

38-40 isn't "old" in 2025 so strike Rollins, Rhodes, and Reigns off. Punk is showing his age but doesn't wrestle often and probably retires by 48-49. Rock may have two matches left in him. Cena will wrestle a handful more times.

Copeland and Christian are 51, Jericho 54, Lashley 48, Benjamin 49, Claudio 44. Gunn was 60 when he was more involved, Sting was around 64-65, Dustin Rhodes will be 56 in a couple weeks, Kingston is 43 and a sloppy mess, Jarrett is 57, and Samoa Joe was champion at 44-45. Some of these I don't have an issue with. The others? Ehh.

When WWE goes "old", it's showcasing guys in their early 40's, a couple nearing 50, and one past 50 who shows up a few times per year. When AEW goes old, they go pretty damn old. Exceptions can be made but I don't want 50-65 year olds holding titles.

When people were complaining so much about AEW being too old, Sting had been retired for well over half a year Rhodes, Kingston (due to injury), and Joe (due to filming) were largely nowhere to be found and Gunn was serving as solely a manager.

You point out Punk is showing his age and doesn’t wrestle much so that makes it okay. Shelton and Lashley are most certainly not showing their age, both in physical appearance and performance, so why is it not okay for them?

Geez Dustin Rhodes been wrestling since around 1988 so he debuted at 18/19 years old?

Surprised Sasha is doing the Owen hart cup - guessing Billie or Athena will cost her the title shot at all in which would lead to Sasha/athena at all in.

I don't know what you're arguing about really. It's like I walked into the middle of a conversation but I provided numbers which show WWE relies on guys around 40ish with one or two exceptions. AEW puts several, much older men in positions to collect wins and potentially titles. Jericho, Copeland, and Christian are in their 50s and have done this. Jarrett and Dustin occasionally get tv time. You don't see men that old wrestling, winning, and cutting promos in WWE.

That's one reason why I'm interested to see what AEW looks like by 2030. The Jericho's, Copeland's, and Jarrett's will be gone.

What does everyone think of Athena? Never saw her on NXT and don’t watch ROH, so I’ve only seen 2-3 matches of hers. Is she the real deal?
I’ve watched very little of her ROH match work outside of PPVs, but the PPV matches have generally been amongst the best women’s matches in North America.

From the clips I have seen on YouTube and social media, the story with Billie Starkz has been entertaining. Though I’ve not been able to follow it as closely since ditching Twitter for Bluesky.

Up until recently when weekly ROH has allegedly gotten better from what regular viewers say, the Athena-Billie stuff has largely been the only reason for anyone to watch the ROH weekly product. She’s essentially been the face of the brand ever since she started working there full time.
