CI Wrestling Thread #56

I’m annoyed because I bought the cheapest plan and wanted to watch that Saturday night live movie and it said I had to upgrade to watch it 🙄
Here’s a suggestion. Make a list of stuff you find that needs the upgrade to watch, upgrade for one month, clean out the list, then go back to the cheapest plan.

Welcome to NXT Ricky Saints!!
What a stupid name, though much better than many of the names that come out of the WWE name generator that sound or are spelled like a suburban white soccer mom who just name their child something stupid to be different.

Either WWE and Ricky couldn’t come to an agreement to use his trademarked name or they didn’t want to have a Ricky Starks and a Zoey Stark.

I can't imagine caring about the size of a ring. That's some king nerd shit.

Starks sounds better than Saints but 1) he's from NOLA and 2) we'll get used to it. Everyone gave in quickly to twitter being called X too. This is a sport where we're calling grown adults names like Moose, Orange Cassidy, Hanger, Punk, Bron Breakker, Lexis King, Bandido, Cash Wheeler, Willow Nightingale, Big Bill, Juice Robinson, and about 200 other dumb names. Ricky Saints doesn't sound bad once you realize you've called another man "Freshly Squeezed" Orange Cassidy.

Nah people still shit on the name X and most people still call it Twitter.

But Cash Wheeler and Lexis King actually sounds like real names.

Hardys on NXT next week? Oh god, Matt trying to keep pace with those youngins in NXT is going to be a sight to behold. Can he even bend his knees at this point? At least Jeff still looked passable at times in AEW. Hopefully whoever is in No Quarter Catch Crew (speaking of stupid names) is of the slow and methodical variety.

That’s old school WWE-WCW debate on ring size and who could go lmao

I always thought it was stupid Vince named Mark Calloway “the Undertaker” instead of something close to his actual real name. It’s almost like it’s a work, bro.

I suppose Ricky Saints isn't near as bad as some of the awful WWE generated names.

AEW announced this morning Double Or Nothing will be held in Glendale, Arizona. First time other than COVID it hasn't been in Las Vegas.

MJF and Hangman Page to face off.
Orange Cassidy vs. Roderick Strong.
The Ops vs. The Patriarchy.
Big Bill vs. Powerhouse Hobbs- Street Fight
Kris Statlander vs. Megan Bayne

Seems like OC returning should have been made a bigger deal, but it is what it is.

Since it’s out there I’ll post the interview text…

Ricky Saints, formerly known as Ricky Starks, addressed his new NXT name and his departure from AEW. Speaking on the transition, he acknowledged fans' resistance to the name change, saying, “It’s as close as you’re going to get to Starks. I like the name. I know a lot of people are going to be…it’s going to take time for them to get used to it. I respect that they care so deeply about me that they rebel against the name change. But at the same time, I am a product of New Orleans, first and foremost, and I want to pay respect to that as well. I think this is the best of both worlds and that means a lot to me. Obviously, I think it’s cool to have a piece of home with me. And the person doesn’t change. I’m still that guy, so it is what it is.”

Regarding his AEW departure, Saints dismissed speculation that his exit was due to his presence at WWE events, stating, “I don’t know the specifics of what it was. Some people, you ask the internet, it was because you were at the Rumble. Screw you. The footage got leaked from me being at the Rumble. I wasn’t backstage…I left after the first match. Some could say well, you were at Mania in a suite and you got on camera cheering. Screw you. You’re an idiot with no friends and no passion in life if you think the damndest thing I’ve done is cheering somebody on in another company…my boss was okay with it.”

Saints admitted there was no single reason for his departure, but acknowledged that CM Punk’s exit had a ripple effect: “I can’t tell you exactly what the moment was. You could say it was Punk leaving and things kinda fell apart. Absolutely, I probably agree with you on that, alright? Or you could say is that Ricky didn’t play the politics well enough. Alright, for sure…there’s so many things you can say. What I can say for myself is that when I got hurt in March, that was it, I never came back. And even then, I wasn’t hurt, it was a precaution thing where I got scared as I had a stinger. Then I was fine. After that, no, no dice, no communication. No nothing. And that is okay because….I ended up here. And it’s fine. Everything worked out. I don’t know explicitly where it went wrong, I can’t point to one thing. I can say it was a storm of things probably. Did I do something that may have tipped them off? Sure, asking for my release whenever you know, this past whatever, that could have been about it right? But never once was I not willing to do something, never once was I sabotaging anything.”

Saints also hinted at backstage politics affecting his creative direction, implying that certain veterans played a role in his situation. “I will say this, there are some people who stuck their nose in my creative business that shouldn’t have happened. Veterans. And that’s it, I’ll leave it at that. And if they got a problem with me, they got my number. And text me about it. I think what it was is if it didn’t work for their creative, then someone had to get the boot. That’s how I see it. But I’m not trying to be negative in my thought process about it…if you want to step on me to get ahead in your illustrious career, everyone has an illustrious career. Everyone should have an illustrious career. That is perfectly fine. But at the same time, I’m not wet behind my ears.”

Despite the circumstances, Saints remains positive about his future, embracing his NXT journey and leaving the past behind.

Wonder if he had to sign a non-disparagement agreement as part of the condition of his release. That was pretty tame when he surely could have said worse.

I wonder if this was the "young guy ignoring the vet's advice" like was rumored to be rampant in AEW a couple years ago, or if it was some vet being shitty to him?

I'm assuming he's referring to the Bucks and Jericho. Bucks wanted AEW in their image and I believe if you considered Punk an ally, you were pushed aside after his firing. Jericho wants to be AEW's Taker but he's more like Hogan than he realizes and his ideas largely suck. You can tell that dude LOVES playing politics.

Page ignored the advice of vets but there may have been others. That was when AEW had guys like Bret, Arn, Tully, Henry, and Roberts hanging around and Page apparently "didn't want or need their advice." That of course set Punk off. Ricky is well-liked by Taker, Punk, and Cody. I don't see him brushing off advice from a vet.

Starks won the tag titles with Big Bill in a squash over FTR. The reign featured several PPV title defenses. And he was in a featured program with Danielson

And all that was after CM Punk got fired. In fact he was regularly featured for seven months after Punk was fired. And much of that was also after he had asked AEW not to pick up his option.

FTR, Brody King, and Buddy Matthews are also notable Punk allies.

Raw I’m pretty sure has ads no matter what
Raw has ads on all tiers if you watch live.

However, if you pay for ad free, you can start it a little late, pause it, select “play from beginning” and it will cut the commercials out until you hit live.

I have the middle tier

Announcement for Gabe Kidd on Collision this Saturday had me hyped as hell. Love everything about that guy.

Revolution card looking very spicey thus far
  • Mox vs. Cope for the AEW title
  • Kenny Omega vs. Takeshita for the International title
  • Ospreay vs. Fletcher in a cage
  • Hangman vs. MJF
  • Mercedes vs. Stardom’s Momo Watanabe for the TBS title
Other clear possibilities include…
  • Stat vs. Megan Bayne
  • Or Bayne and Penelope Ford vs. Stat and Thunder Rosa after that very awkward post match angle tonight
  • Ricochet vs. Swerve
  • Toni Storm vs. someone - it’s one of their major PPVs and normally a contender for their best show of the year, I have to assume she’s on the card

Ricochet’s character and promo work as a heel has been exceptional.

I wish AEW would do a video package about the history of importance of the Crown Jewel of the Embassy robe. Only people that watched early years ROH understand the importance and prestige of that robe.

Maybe it was Copeland who had the issue with Starks? He pretty much disappeared after their verbal battle a while back.

Thought the opening segment with MJF and Hangman was really good. Enjoyed most of the rest of the show but that aftermath of the women's match was awful. Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing Thunder Rosa go away also.

Collision did 502,000 viewers and a .21 on Saturday. It of course had a good lead in from All-Star Saturday Night and yes they had lost 3/4 of the viewers from start to end by the time the show finished around 1 am. That's a shame because May and Storm was really good.

Anyone else think Ricochet’s last couple heel promos have been pretty darned good? His first few AEW ones were pretty bad, like normal, but since the Swerve feud kicked up, I’ve thought he’s been very good.

Who would have ever guessed when Rico left WWE that he'd become a character and promo guy? Sometimes people just need the right situation with someone who is willing to invest in them and give them the chance to excel.

Thank you Triple H and Vince for your incompetence that gift wrapped Toni Storm, Swerve, Ricochet, Samoa Joe, and the Hurt Syndicate to AEW.

People are saying the midcard titles have already been booked to pointlessness.
Both those points are valid and likely true but also having liv and rhea have 15 matches didn’t help either. The division keeps spinning its wheels.

They probably wanted to have jade/bianca but jade either has been out or can’t do a whole match at wm which is prob why she’s in tag team.

There’s just a tremendous gap between the top stars (Rhea/tiffany) and everyone else so the Midcard titles are basically throwaway.

To be fair Chelsea green has been great but there’s no one viable other than michin to feud with her.
