CI Wrestling Thread #56

AEW is on a streak of 7 out of 8 good to solid shows, that’s basically a month’s worth of consistently entertaining television.
It's all up to a person's taste. Just not sure I buy that many solid shows in a row when everyone has complained about the main storyline and had Jarrett all over their screens for a few weeks. It'd be like everyone hating the Bloodline while getting a [insert old wrestler no one cares about] angle and saying Smackdown has been very good.

I see them slowly turning a corner though. Storm/May, the HS, MJF/Page, Swerve/Ricochet, Cameron...those are definite positives. I've crapped on some of the Storm stuff but her as May was pretty damn good.

100% correct

To me, it would be like saying a basketball team that just won 7 out of 8 games isn't on a hot streak because they are losing the battle in some statistical category every single game. The goal is to win games, not be perfect.

Not everything the WWE does is well liked by its fans either. There are even WWE fans complaining about the Bloodline, Jey Uso winning the Royal Rumble despite being one of the biggest fan favorites, Cody, the state of the tag division, etc. Does that mean WWE isn't putting out a quality product right now?

And that's my problem with the IWC - the nitpickiness. If something doesn't meet their specific interests and their interest only then it gets trashed. Everything has to be exactly how they want it or it's not good enough. It's never going to be that way.

Frankly, the IWC as a whole mirrors a lot of what I see on here for Kentucky basketball and why I've largely stopped engaging with the basketball discussion on here. UK win's a game and no matter what there's going to be people on here bitching and moaning about a player's performance of some general aspect of the game. Like dude you're a fan, just enjoy the damn win instead of overanalyzing everything.

Full WON annual awards finally released. The voting has contradictions all over the place that make no sense...
  • Triple H wins Booker of the Year (no surprise) but WWE once again is spattered all over most of the worst of the year categories.
  • Raw 3rd best show but also 4th worst show. WWE winis promotion of the year but is also third worst promotion of the year. Well which is it people?
  • NWA worst promotion of the year but it's only weekly show finishes a distant 3rd.
  • AAA finishes a close 2nd for worst promotion of the year but it's only weekly US TV show got canceled after less than a year of being on the air and finishes 8th for worst TV show
Biggest surprise winners, either because they won or the margin of victory...
  • Dynamite best TV show with nearly double the votes of second place
  • Will Ospreay best flyer even though he's not much of a flyer anymore
  • WWE/TKO and Saudi relationship for worst promotional tactic - would have figured it would have been something related to all the legal matters and scandals
  • NWA worst promotion of the year when barely anyone even watches it
  • Not a winner, but NXT getting second for worst show (behind Rampage) was a surprise to me.
  • Also not a winner, but Taro Okada finished just one point behind TK for best booker when I rarely ever even read Stardom fans complimenting his booking.

Kenny Omega shared his thoughts on Logan Paul's wrestling ability, acknowledging his talent but questioning how he would fare in a more demanding environment like New Japan Pro Wrestling.

"Right there. Logan Paul is a fantastic wrestler. Great. I'm glad you think so, and I'm glad he's able to convince you of such a thing." However, Omega made it clear that excelling in WWE does not necessarily mean Paul could thrive in other promotions with different styles and rigorous schedules. "However, would Logan Paul walk into New Japan and do a G1 where you have to walk in for every night and have an actual banger? No, he absolutely could not."

He emphasized that Paul's potential depends on his commitment level but questioned whether that even matters, given his current trajectory. "Is he going to get there between now and... I mean, it depends on his commitment level. And not only that, but does it matter? No, he's clearly setting his roots down in WWE, and that's where he wants to succeed, and that's where he wants to be a star, and that totally makes sense."

Omega explained how WWE’s structured environment benefits Paul, allowing him to develop gradually. "So for the WWE style and for what they're willing to do for him, give him time, allow him to grow, develop, and get more familiar with his surroundings, take the time to have him have everything up in here, make sure that when it comes time to perform, what it is that they've rehearsed, what they've scripted, that he'll be able to pull it off as though he just showed up to the arena like, you know, how the old-timers did back in the day."

In a lighthearted moment, Omega referenced past wrestlers known for their ability to perform at a high level with minimal preparation. "The Terry Taylors and the Terry Funks. I don't know why I picked two people that were named Terry, but you know what I mean. It could have been anybody. Terry Crews. There, Terry Crews. There you go."

Omega's comments suggest that while Logan Paul is impressive within WWE’s system, his ability to perform at the highest level outside of that structured system.

Haven’t read any spoilers on anything that happened on the Grand Slam main show and won’t be posting any of that.

AEW will be returning to Australia next year as AEW posted on their own socials so as far as I’m concerned that’s fair game to post. Location and date not announced after this years event produced the third largest gate in AEW history.

Apparently they sold out of all merch. Hopefully that means they brought a ton and there was much heavier demand than forecasted instead of having a paltry stock.

Reports from the live crowd is that the event was spectacular.

For the AEW/ROH Global Wars they taped before Grand Slam, apparently Big Bill was insanely over. I’ve not liked the Learning Tree stuff in general but have liked what they have done with Big Bill out of it. He’s one of the exceedingly few giants in wrestling anymore and he’s actually a good wrestler unlike a lot of giants have been in the past.

Big Bill deserves a good push - he has come a long way back since a few years ago. Hopefully his feud with Hobbs is a jumpstart for both of them.

Agree on Bill. Guess Jericho has helped one or two guys the last few years.

Thought the Miz/Knight segment last night sucked. Vince had a small rotation of guys (plus Charlotte) that he depended on so much that there's not a whole lot you can do with them now in 2025. The exception is Orton but that's also because he was out for a year plus and has been out again the last couple months. People just don't want to see the likes of Miz and Charlotte on their screens anymore.

Charlotte and Trish are going to help Tiffany become a massive baby face just by association.

Josh Alexander’s contract with TNA expired today (February 14th, 2025).

PWInsider is reporting that Alexander is being represented by Barry Bloom during his free agency and Fightful Select is reporting that he is likely going to sign a deal with AEW if he hasn’t already.
