Caller on Mark Popes show apologizes

Cal at 66 is an old coach with an old staff.
Make you wonder how long he can stay relevant in recruiting circles since he no longer has the UK brand to sell to recruits.
The kids entering HS now have never seen Cal win anything.
Cal is like a sugar daddy. He has big NIL $$$.

That's what is most important to players today.....

This thread has reminded me how fast time goes. I was 29 when Cal was hired. 😱
I was early 20's. It's crazy how you can link the coaches to stages of your life.

Pitino when I was a little kid, Tubby came when I was towards the end of grade school through high school.
I just block out the BCG stuff.
Calipari the majority of my adult life.

Other schools can match his NIL for any one player as evident by the fact that Arkansas was never a player in the Dybanasta sweepstakes.
He had been recruiting Thomas and Acuff to UK before he left and I really don't think any of the bluebloods really cared that he got Acuff.
Cals days of reeling in mega classes is over.

I am of a similar age as you.

I was 28 when Cal was hired (turned 29 about 5 months later) and 43 when Pope was hired.

I was a baby/toddler during Hall, a small child for Sutton, small child to teenager for Pitino, teenager to young adult for Tubby and like to block out BCG altogether. Lol.

Kids today don't care nearly as much about winning as getting to the league. We have a boat load of NBAers and they're all guys Cal coached so there's a lot of shelf life left for Cal on that matter. Not sure Cal's got much left in the tank though. He seems pretty miserable. Pope should be able to coach well into his 70's if he wants. Started late in life and takes great care of himself.

I hope Pope isn’t coaching in his 70s. To me that’s entirely too long at UK. Besides he shouldn’t be greedy, just take his 4 titles and HOF status and retire at 60.

Reminds me in a round about way of a scene from the movie Patton where an operation Gen. Bradley was in charge of was going bad and he found himself on the front line with the men.
  • Soldier : What silly son of a b!#ch is in charge of this operation?
General Omar N. Bradley : I don't know, but they oughta hang him.

One of my favorite movies. And that was a great scene.
