Calipari won't be U.S.A. basketballs coach

Ben Roberts ‏@NextCats 2m2 minutes ago

Gregg Popovich has been named the head coach of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team for 2017-20.

I'm sure NO is shaking in there boots.

But I also think pop won't coach long. They better start thinking of his replacement. Lol

short sighted view. understandable though.

pop is 66 right now. he is a short term solution. also...getting the big time NBA players to continue to buy in is essential. who is going to have more big time pros in the league for the next 10 years? davis, cousins, wall, etc...

At least since Cal didn't get the gig, it went to an NBA coach. I like Pop a lot, best coach in the league in my opinion. I can't imagine though that he'll wanna do it past the summer games in 2020 though.

Looks like K made his only decision in his "special advisory role".

Truth is, it never should have gone to a college coach, in my opinion. It's too much of a recruiting edge. I'm glad K isn't still in the position and Cal doesn't need the help, and we don't need the hassle of having to listen to rivals complain about it.

Personally I would've enjoyed listening to the rivals whine about it.

what, this all a conspiracy by UL...they had known for years that K would step down at this point...soooo, CRP in 2010 asked McGee to fall on the sword and set up this stripper thing, with the knowledge they would blow this thing up in 2015 (no prosecution in Kentucky), so the commonwealth might have enough stain, and that Cal would never be the Olympic coach.
My best kerryrhodes impersonation

Now, Popovich will take over the USA National program in 2017 and players will love the idea of performing for him. Krzyzewski will finish his third tour as the national coach in 2016, and stay on as a "special adviser," which loosely translated means this: Krzyzewski will still have the access and influence to use USA Basketball's junior national teams to leverage his Duke recruiting. High school players committing to Duke understand they have a preferred path to making those under-18 and -19 rosters competing in international tournaments.

Krzyzewski will no longer be able to get a Mason Plumlee on the World Cup team with Popovich as coach, but rest assured that Krzyzewski was fully behind the appointment of an NBA coach as his successor. Out of loyalty to Krzyzewski, Colangelo would've never afforded another college coach that influence as long as Krzyzewski stayed at Duke.

There's nothing more pathetic than a fan from another school who runs over here to post something about his school; they seek, nay, they CRAVE the BBN's attention.

Don't really care what type of advantages Coach K's buddy is trying to give him. Cal still takes care of business on the recruiting trail.

That's correct. Even with the influential position Coach K had, he still couldn't out recruit Cal. Cal is the greatest recruiter of all time....bar none.
