Caleb Wilson cancels on Arky again

He did, but he has done alot more flirting with uk. His buddy comitted here, he was at the champions classic and tweets about uk all the time. At the is point it would be a upset for him not to be at Kentucky
He’s been on some unofficial visits to UNC . That’s always concerning to me . But I think we are in pretty good shape with him .

I was all about Cal and the young guns when he was getting the right ones. After he won his championship, he got soft and recruited soft players. No way I would send my kid to him, he has nothing to offer them anymore. The fishbowl of UK was what prepared the kids best for the NBA..the mental part of the game was the education. His development of players is non-existent..
Disagree about the players after ‘12 being soft. No, it wasn’t just being at UK that prepared all the pros in the nba now from Ky. UK had great players all during cow’s tenure, great men, absolute studs. Cow just was and is a bad coach. And to player development, that’s also not true. It’s easy to be a huge critic of cow now, I am too, buy you’re going too far.

Around Covid is when shooting and actual tnsigible basketball skills got heightened in teams systems more. Cal didn’t adjust and just wanted to rely on athleticism. Last year he tried to change but he didn’t play his best players together.
You don’t believe dj and je were the best? Good, because no one but cow felt that way.

I get him being excited about being rich, but you can be classy and respectful toward people's time AND be excited about being rich. A lot of these kids have been put on a pedestal for so long that they think the world revolves around them, and couldn't possibly care less how others are affected. I guess I was raised differently.
He said in the interview that he has seen the schools (except for Arkansas) , met and talked to the coaches, and now he wants to watch them in game situations and see how they “coach their players “. That seems very fair and intelligent to me . I would imagine he was pretty impressed with Popes interactions with the players . I’d be curious if he watched the Arkansas- Troy game and saw Cal stomping his foot and screaming like an idiot.

I had never heard that about Jay Williams.
Me either, but I heard Williams himself say it . Surprised the hell out of me . Can you imagine him with Bogans and Prince .

Didn’t say anything about not having good players.. but he stopped recruiting pure dawgs like Wall, Boogie, MKG. H

Cal stopped recruiting the inner city kids, the ones with a chip on their shoulder. Without them, his system doesn’t work. You have to have a kid or 2 that can go get their own for his system to work.

Don'tworryaboutit23 still has his mindset tied to Cal pushing kids out the door whenever the G-League winked at them. Those days are done. We'll lose guys to the draft, but it won't be because Pope blesses premature departures the same way Cal did.

I saw a podcast last night with Teague and Lamb talking to Cal, and Cal bragged about how he didn't pressure either of them to reconsider their early exists. Meanwhile, Teague should have definitely come back and ended up hurting his NBA career because of leaving early.

Pope's not going to hold the door open for them the way Cal used to.
Cal's system depended on players leaving ready or not to make room for the next wave of OADs. His OAD system wouldn't work if recruits felt they had to compete for starting roles. For the players who dared to stay more than one season, more often than not they had to take a backseat to the next wave of OADs.

Cal's measure of success was winning the recruiting wars and having the greatest number of players in the Green Room on draft night. He had no real interest in winning the conference tourney and eventually the NC. He seems to have had incredible disdain for Kentucky as a Blue Blood because it overshadowed his brand so he worked hard to destroy it.

Cal didn't stop recruiting them; he simply lost out to other universities.

I would love to get Wilson, but if he goes elsewhere, Pope will continue building a good team just as he did with our current team. Like a great chef who can make almost anything taste good, Pope will work magic with whatever he has to work with to build a winning team. I believe his style of play will attract all of the talent we need from either high school or transfer portal players.

I’m like that. I want Wilson because CMP wants him . Evidently badly. But if missing out on him frees up 2 million to get a great shooting stretch 4 from the portal then so be it . I mean honestly, it would take one hell of a freshman to do the things and have the season Carr is having thus far.

For the first time in a very long time, I feel the program is in the hands of a competent coach who has a plan and knows how to execute it. Pope will do what is best for the team and will not make dumb emotional moves that are unhealthy for the team.

We'll add Wilson for a total of four incoming freshmen, then add at least three elite portal players, and bring back five.

I could see Pope getting up to the 13 scholarship line now instead of 12 because he can have 15 scholarship players next season. Philosophically, he used to hold out one spot because he likes to keep a roster spot open for any unforeseen elite transfers. With two extra scholarships now, he won't have to worry about that. We'll have more than enough room for last-second additions.

So I could see UK adding a potential FOURTH guy from the portal. Noah and Perry are going to have to take a massive leap if they want to be rotation pieces as sophomores. I actually wouldn't mind seeing Noah redshirt this season so he can get stronger.

Me too , but in very back, dark, resources of my mind (probably ptsd from Cal) the thought creeps in that CMP has never been able to get these 5 star types and it’s like a shiny new toy for him . A team relying heavily on freshman hasn’t been to the final four since 2015 . Hope he doesn’t have to find out for himself how hard it is to win with freshman. Probably get killed for admitting this but I’m just being honest.

I actually don't think any of the freshmen will start next year except for Johnson. I don't even think Wilson would start if he comes here. I see him more as a swiss-army knife off the bench and I'm pretty sure Pope will grad a veteran stretch-four from the portal to start at power forward.

I love Lewis as well, but I bet he comes off the bench.

G - Portal
G - Johnson
F - Oweh
F - Portal
C - Garrison

With Wilson, Lewis, Moreno, Chandler, Perry, Noah, and at least one more portal transfer off the bench.

I guess a lot will depend on if Oweh starts as a 2 or as a three. Might depend on the opponent.

There is no reason for you to get killed. I happened to believe that a competent coach could have done a lot more with last year's team than Cal. Pope would have never given DJ the starting job just because of his father. Pope would have had the right players playing at the right time and he would have maximized the use of his 3 sharp shooters to a deep tourney run.
