Cal to Receive Nat’l Race Relations Award

Great coach! Great man! Great representative for UK and college basketball as a whole! Very deserving of any accolades that come his way.

He's got a very small group of determined internet haters that form the CHC. Other than that super minority he gets the respect he deserves. The CHC has become a caricature and doesn't even realize it.

While that's all good I do remember Cal didn't stand up for the Rupp family when the woke nonsense ignited in 2020. He allowed the false narrative of UK being a racist school along with Rupp to continue.
I remember it a little differently (and maybe I’m misremembering). Didn’t Cal support his players having opinions and said that he would listen to them, but also said that his plan was to get former players under Rupp on a zoom call so they could talk about him and answer any questions current players have?

Shhhh, the truth doesn't fit their narrative.

Which would seem to be the most reasonable way to handle it. Same handful of jackasses will condemn it that always love to flirt with controversial racial takes but can’t ever just commit to where they actually stand so they act like victims when they get called out won’t like it but they don’t like anything.

This. It was the most reasonable way to handle it. Rupp wasn't a racist. But through a looking glass of 2023 eyes, it's murky to see that. Even for people that know he wasn't. Rupp was very blunt and straight forwarded. And in the era of over-analysis, that can cause mixed feelings and signals. Cal did the right thing by getting his guys to talk with guys that played under Rupp. We have to be able to talk about things, including difficult things, without demonizing and dehumanizing the other side.

Below is the article of how the Brooks/Rupp nonsense has occurred.

1. Brooks was actually the one with a racist thought as he assumed Adolph was some kind of linkage to Adolph Hitler. So, Brooks made a mistake...which needed to be corrected (and it can be a gentle correction) but he was wrong in his stereotype of al people named Adolph.

2. But Brooks next sentence is yet another problem....he's yammering at fans that want 2 hours of entertainment and that somehow gives him a license to spout off anything he wants (which is his legal right of speech) but also no push back on his views (which he has zero right to). Another chance to educate Brooks on reality.

3. Cal in the final paragraphs is typical Cal pussified approach to players.
- "Don't blame them, blame me" (and I've got a cushy $90M contract....so you can't really do much to me in the end)
- But fans show respect that the players deserve (which is fair) but players don't have any respect to the fanbase. And Brooks bails on Ky when his NBA dreams blew up and goes to Washington Huskies to end his career in anonymity.
- Cal did video of visiting the Rupp grave sight early in his UK career and had a personal relationship with the family. But all of his knowledge of history....he never stands up for what he knew and instead bent the proverbial knee to his players.

Give the man his race trophy...whatever. He's done his make a wish foundation for black kids (hello Shady Sharpe), arrogantly talked down to his own fanbase, lies/misleads every single season, like the politician he is laments for more $$$ for practice facilities, etc.... He's been a colossal mess at UK for over half of his UK tenure now. But he's a great man....please.

Being honest, I haven’t educated myself well enough on Adolph Rupp or just the whole situation at hand to really give you my thoughts on it,” said Brooks. “But from what I do know, I’d like to see a name change because what his name is and what that’s connected to and what it represents,” Brooks said.

The quote from Brooks upset a large portion of Big Blue Nation that stands against the idea of removing Rupp’s name from the arena known as one of college basketball’s most prestigious cathedrals.

“We’re people that have strong views on topics just like the fans do,” Brooks said when asked about backlash from fans. “I think they just want us to go out there and entertain them for an hour or two, then shut up, but that’s not going to work. That’s not how it is.”

“BBN, I know some of you are upset with Keion Brooks’ comments regarding Rupp Arena,” Calipari wrote on Twitter. “Let me tell you he’s a very smart person and a very conscientious young man. However you feel about what he said, my hope is you show him the respect that all of our/your players deserve.”

Calipari added that he hasn’t had a discussion with his players about Adolph Rupp and who he is, but that is the plan moving forward.

“My job is to make sure all of our players are educated on all that goes along with Coach Rupp’s name, and we are going to walk through that. My plan is to get former players on a Zoom with our current guys so they can ask those players directly about Coach Rupp.

“My focus has been on everything going forward, which is why we hadn’t addressed it. As I’ve said before, give these players the benefit of the doubt. If you’re unhappy w/anything, be unhappy with me, not a 19-year-old who is walking through these difficult times. I love you all.”

In reference to your 1. point, if Keion was truly equating Rupp to Hitler because they share the same name (different spelling), that wouldn't be racist, it would just be dumb. Just wanted to clarify that.

Also, there are reports (whether disputed or not) of Rupp using racial slurs and having certain prejudices against black players. I completely understand guys on our team not necessarily being comfortable playing in an arena named after someone with that kind of history.

Yeah there’s really no controversy. When you grow up being told you are a first class citizen and anyone that doesn’t look like you is second class, of course you will become racist. Being around sports and the public, I have no doubt that Rupp was able to shed much of that indoctrination, but it’s a simple fact that in those times, racism was just accepted fact. My own father and mother had racist “facts” bored into their heads that they shedded over time because of life experience and change in societal expectations of how we treat each other. This context all matters, but people get uncomfortable when it comes time to acknowledge the objective truths of how society treated/treats people and how that evolves over time. We can also allow for nuance. I do not think that Rupp was racist, but you are denying the truth if you think he didn’t hold some racist ideas because of indoctrination and societal attitudes. You are fooling yourself if you think those ideas and accepted societal facts didn’t affect his worldview.

He definitely did.

You can tell who the triggered people are n this thread.

Well....Brooks is the one who stated "“But from what I do know, I’d like to see a name change because what his name is and what that’s connected to and what it represents,” .

So to correlate people named Adolph must hate Jews and be anti semitic...is for sure dumb. But could be racist....

As far as Rupp using racial slurs...Frank Deford wrote almost all of that stuff, he waited until Rupp was dead to write his thoughts and Rupp wasn't around to defend himself. And playres like Riley and larry Conley said they never heard n-word, coon, etc.. from Coach Rupp.. People want a story and this is how it happens. Spare me on Brooks uncomfortable playing in Rupp Arena....let me know what is on his music playlist before we talk of this nonsense.

You're reading way too much into the whole first name being Adolph (Adolf) thing.

Regardless, if you can't see how there's a difference in black people saying the n word and white people saying it then that is quite ridiculous.

First…I’m not reading way too much..it’s word for word out of Brooks own mouth. So what else was he saying if not his own words

Secondly, I don’t remember getting into his offensive the n word is from white people vs. black people. I don’t see how it has a thing in rhe world to do with anything to be honest

I feel like we're arguing different things about this topic but you claiming that it's racist for him to say that all Adolph's are anti-semitic is just as dumb as the original comment from Keion. That's not what racism means. If there's any word for it, it's simply anti-Adolph (Adolf).

"let me know what is on his music playlist before we talk of this nonsense." what did you mean by that? tell me how you weren't assuming that just because he may or may not listen to music that involves black people saying the n word that that has anything to do with being uncomfortable playing in a building named after someone who had a racist past. That's the same tired argument that people make when they want to downplay the use of that word.

Now I'm caught up with you...

The music guys listen to from many black artists..
1. Sure the language is part of it IMO...and n-word is flung around like soft serve ice cream goes down at Rupp
2. Women are b-words and hoes.....constantly
3. Violence is glorified in how to act

I'm sorry....I've never felt an inch of sympathy for Keion "17 foot jumper" Brooks. He acted like an idiot at UK....not just the Rupp commentary.

But I digressed a ton on this thread....Cal can have his award....yay yay. I don't think much of a man that panders, then lies to fans on behalf of said black athletes, etc...and call that a man of Race Relations.

I must say , that was very well written.

The bickering reminded me of this. Here’s something the board racists and nonracist alike can enjoy regardless of stance. Enjoy!

And I have no doubt that he overcame a lot of the prejudice that was drilled into his head during his early years. Maybe not all of it, but probably the majority of it.
