Cal press conference last night

I know, I about passed out when he said massage the ball. I’m like what??? You are playing Troy who can’t score, they literally can’t even hold onto the ball and you don’t want to up the pressure, you want to massage the ball!!!
That and the "wait to score at the horn and watch the other team's shoulders slump". Well what if you keep missing and they keep scoring? You know kind of like Mississippi State on the road last year? Or Kansas in the Champions Classic or......just insert nonsense approach for far too long. Or that game that killed their spirit--UGA at home on pace for about 150 and he takes air out and they are fighting to get the win.

It's insane to approach games like this. No other top program does this. They all will dribble it out with about 20 secs left with their reserves but they let them play as they should. He doesn't even want his starters playing for God's sake.

Remember the "injuries" and back spasms that held him out but he'd be up jumping up and down on the bench. That's total BS and happens far too much with Cal lately.
Ah man that really makes me upset then, I didn’t think Adou would pull that kind of stuff. If he does that now they better pony up because he controls that team. Maybe that is why Cal is talking him up so much in press conferences.

That UGA game was sickening and really showed that we couldn’t guard a fence post.

Those Arkansas reporters have no idea what is going on. They don’t know whether to laugh or… there’s just awkward silence.

I respectfully disagree. 2016 was competitive even without a center. 2017 was amazing but got Higginsed. THAT game broke Cal. Let's be honest, it broke a lot of us. We got hosed.
Lol. Cal was broke before that 2015 game. He couldn't coach then, not even with a team that he platooned most of the season. They won a lot that season, in spite of Cal, but in the end he had promises to the twins that he had to keep. Cal died after that championship when he said that he was happy that he got it out of the way.

That's the only question I have. I wonder how the 5 stars will play under Pope? What I mean is most not all but most 5 stars wanna play ME ball not team ball.
I do believe Pope will recruit the 5 stars that he believes are as much about the team as they are about themselves.
The fact remains that no final four team in recent history has had 3 freshman playing major minutes . It’s gonna be interesting.

He was stunned by having to leave UK. He tried to bully and his bluff got called.

He's a cartoon character now. Not even remotely credible.

I think he feels too safe and too untouchable. There was some of that here but now I'd say it's bad.

Should've left for UCLA. Should have let him leave for UCLA but I don't blame Mitch for not. But I do blame him for a lifetime deal that about took us down.
His arrogance has caught up to him as well as his condescending double talk

I think people are really starting to see it wasn't just us now. It wasn't just "Bennies" and spoiled brat UK fans. Dude is not the same coach anymore. No way that's the same Cal that came here in 2009.

It's like he had his heart broken in 2015 (hell, who didn't); got it ripped out again in 2017 (yep) and then just gave the hell up after Covid. Sad end to one of the biggest names in the sport.
Yeah, I completely agree. I have some possible explanations but I don't understand all of it. He won a title. That was a big one that changed in 2012. His passion to win dropped after that, but that wasn't the biggest one. The team that nearly went undefeated until losing in the Final Four to Wisconsin really changed his outlook on winning as well. The lifetime contract in 2019 changed him, too. But the biggest part was Covid-19, in my opinion. It changed him. He's always been a bleeding heart liberal (sorry folks, I don't care about that for UK fans- don't care what your politics are if you bleed blue). But, Cal's entire outlook on life changed during Covid. We saw it immediately with his worst season in his career that next season. He started treating everyone with kid gloves. He wouldn't push players anymore. He wouldn't put wins ahead of sending players to the NBA. He decided his purpose in life was to make NBA millionaires "fighting generational poverty." UK stopped coming first. Titles stopped being the focus.

And now at Arkansas, it's the same. He just recently gave a speech about what will go on his headstone or said at his funeral and how he doesn't care about wins, about hall of fame, about winning championships, about measurable accomplishments, but about helping people. And what does that mean? He's focused on getting players to the NBA. That's it. If his teams don't win the SEC or make a Final Four or win a title, but he gets 3 into the NBA, that's success.

Now, the crazy thing is, he COULD do those things simultaneously. That's how I excused him when he called an NBA draft night in 2010 "the greatest night in UK history." I thought he would send guys to the NBA while winning titles. And he then went to a Final Four and won a title over the next 2 years. But he didn't keep it going after 2015 or so. And after Covid, he' lost the will to make it happen. He just won't push his players to make it happen because he wants them happy and healthy more than he wants them winning. I think it's a fall-back position for him. He knows he's lost his edge. Arkansas fans, I hate it for them because they've bought into the hype. And he's brought in talent, like he always does, so they love that. But they won't love the results in the end. And they'll be stuck because he will have another highly rated class coming in next year, and on. But it will take a generational talent (like Anthony Davis) to win him a title. That is just the truth.

Yep. You can be arrogant and act like your ish doesn’t stink when you’re performing at a high level and it will be forgiven by the fans.

When you’re as arrogant and condescending as Cal but underperforming, the word for that is a-hole.

There is a bit of schadenfreude in watching this, but overall, it just makes me sad.

This is a guy who was on top of the college basketball world a decade ago.

Seeing him for what he is today, a broken man who is a mere parody of his former self, should be a cautionary tale for anyone who makes it to the pinnacle of their profession.
Don’t be sad about him. He’s coaching somewhere else. He could still be coaching here. We just beat dook. Don’t be sad. Also, heard or read cow is worth $70 million. Be glad he’s elsewhere and we’re not miserable with him here.

It isn't just that he lost his will. Coach K decided to play the OAD game and became better at it than Cal. Cal was basically getting players that K didn't want. He was no longer getting the best of the OADs. Not having enough talent to overcome his lack of coaching skills sealed his fate.
