Cal Postgame

Cal said Jordan Burks is going to play the 3 going forward lol..what!?
He also said 2 weeks ago or so that this was the way we was gonna continue to play and that's why he had tried to get shooters. Then, a couple nights later he said they weren't actually shooters coming out of HS but that they had become shooters from hard work and dedication. And so today we end up end up back at grinded it out. 🤦

I believe I could understand the man better if he jus spoke in tongues. As long as we win let him talk and try to get those radios shut off before he gets a headset on after the games. It's best to agree with Dementia. Hell, but we got good ol' Bruiser... He'll remind him what he said and have Burks where he supposed to be at 😂. When Bruiser tells him the 3 he'll get 3 packs of juicy fruit.

Id like to see Bruisers notes of whatever it is he is writing down on the bench. Prob a grocery list that says 4 pks of Bazooka, 1 bag of Double Bubble, Big League chew bubble gum. Bubble gum cigars for after the win. Sorry sorry I got carried away here.

I haven't listened to his post game comments in years.

Yesterday, I happened to be riding in the car with my brother and we were listening to the game. When Cal came on, I reached over and turned off the radio. Listening to him gives me a headache. Whatever he says is usually largely incoherent. And if you can figure it out, it's typically meaningless.

Why go slow is what I don't get. Bradshaw is not the reason either. Brsdshaw looked pretty good. It's Cal.

Could tell right away he had the brakes on from the tip.
And he needs too. You need to learn to play varying styles of basketball. It’s a huge benefit in a tournament setting to be versatile. We won by 15 lol. If we run all game we may have lost, never know. Why get into the same style and be predictable every game? Why not win with any style? Because you don’t like to watch as good?

Wut? You left Mitchell out of the lineup altogether?
No not all together. I looked back at the game yesterday and he played decent. He is a good passer. I just think we could play at a higher level if we had more speed and quickness on the floor. I just think Bradshaw and 3 gaurds(Thiero or Edwards at 4) would be dynamic.

Cal's need to control is greater than his need to win. It's close, but control is #1 with him.

It’s not close. Winning? Yes, but anyone he has power of others that is a personal win to him. He can reinterpret what it means to win for himself. Winning ncaa championships? Nice, but well below control for him.

This team should be taking 30 3s a game and playing fast. Why does ccc want to slow it down and play a fist fight type of game for
It seems like he is getting Bradshaw back into the groove still. Also, it was to slow down Penn, who looks like they enjoy playing fast. Teams do this to us all the time and it is effective with disrupting the flow of the offense.

I would agree with you that its good to be able to play different styles and win playing different ways and it's true that we won by 15 but I think Cals pretty damn predictable by now.

He only does it one way as far as I know and that's get up by 8 and then try to run clock and commit turnovers and screw it up but then sometimes we might get lucky to get back up 8 again before it's over and break it open to win by 15 like yesterday but when guys have the hot hand and scoring the ball at a decent clip then why not put your foot on the opponents throat every once in awhile and win by 30. Get some guys confidence and get some other guys in to play some garbage mins if we get a comfortable lead. Morale will be good.

They'll always be plenty of situations for tight games that we will have to grind out in the SEC and turn into soccer games. It's fine if it's a big game and stall with 2:00 to go but damn every game don't have to b close.

Besides I got bets to cover and Over/Unders. 😂

It's wild to me that you guys talk about Cal like he's actually, like Chris Broussard would say, developmentally disabled. There are plenty of actual criticism you could levy against the guy, and yet this board literally thinks he's an absolute idiot who has no clue how to coach the game of basketball.
I didn’t say he’s an idiot. I was a high school and d2 coach for a long time. There are a lot of coaches who just can’t make that split second decisions. Often it’s not because of anything other than being indecisive. Cal is not a decisive coach. It’s why we give up big leads, it’s why we cant close a game out up 6 with 3 min to go, it’s why his go to coaching moves are man to man defense and killing clock. Can you think of a game you walked away from thinking cal executed brilliantly? I can’t. If it’s a close game those generally aren’t decided by cal chess moves. He freezes. He has no idea when to use timeouts. I mean there are so many deficiencies with quick decisive action from cal. I’ve seen cal many times leave the same 5 on the floor when it’s obvious they are killing us, he will sometime leave them on the floor an extra 4-5 possessions when every one in the building knows some guys need to be subbed out. Cal is often last to figure it out. Then he tells you in the pregame “yeah I forgot about this guy on the bench or that.” I think cal projects an inner arrogance but the reality is he isn’t confident enough in himself to be indecisive with our losing. That’s called over conservative but it isn’t for strategy in Cals case it’s for thinking. If he did more than tout his man to man defense and 14years of dribble drive well that would be different. The problem is you take the man from his comfort zone and he freezes up.

He might be able to play the 3. It just depends on who’s in the game with him. Just not sure he has a good enough handle.
Yeah me either, that’s is why I think if he can shoot a little he may benefit us as a small 4 so we can run because he can rebound and mix it up a little.

Definitely think we should run the Bradshaw-less lineup a little, then run Bradshaw in place of Mitchell a little. When we use them both, Mitchell should be played on the perimeter more to pull his man out. He’s a shooting threat too and would keep the lane more open.

Cal letting everyone know that Burks is going to play the 3 is him telling the fans he is going to do it his way come hell or high water. That is the way I see it. Cal knows what the discussions are among the fanbase. That is why he drops these types of comments in.

I think the Ohio State game in 2011 he coached a great game. There have been plenty of others is just after 2019 he hasn’t any great tourney games. The games we lost since 2017 have all been because of slowing it down, not getting a stops, and playing the same way.

Spot on. They should sub for one another for the most part.

I think it’s to try and keep him happy. Now that Bradshaw is back he won’t get post minutes anymore. He has played hard and deserves mintues and the 3/4 is probably the easiest place to get him some.

very possible. To be honest I think Burks gives us more and has a higher upside than Edwards. He just dont have as many stars by his name

I'm assuming he just means in spots in games where we have a comfortable lead. Burks isn't going to get major minutes moving forward now that Bradshaw has worked his way into the rotation.
Define "comfortable lead." We were up 16 in the first half and they freaking TIED IT.

Arkansas took 46 three point shots today against Purdue
First it was Alabama

second they loss

Had a huge free throw discrepency because you hardly ever draw fouls shooting 3 pointers or put their players in foul trouble

I know people say that but thad Matta is perhaps an even worse coach so I’ve never put much stock into that. I know he had the team prepared and we played well and of course I thought ole cal in 2011 was a fantastic coach. I’ve slowly learned it was smoke and mirrors I guess. I thought he was a great coach at umass.

You can’t diss everyone of Cal’s accomplishments because of this, that, or the other. I mean he has in fact coached some good games before.

I always like a win. If you think this team played as well Saturday as it had before playing open and free flowing, I completely disagree.

Yeah, maybe try some varying styles on the defensive side.
