The University of Kentucky has offered John Calipari what is essentially a lifetime contract extension in response to a lucrative offer the coach has received from UCLA, The Athletic has learned.

UCLA offered Calipari a contract worth approximately $48 million over six years, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. The contacts between Calipari and UCLA have been more extensive than previously reported, but Calipari told UCLA last week he is not interested in leaving Kentucky.

Kentucky gave UCLA permission to speak with Calipari but did not take seriously the possibility that he would leave, partly because in the past UCLA has not committed nearly the same type of financial resources that Kentucky has for basketball. (Calipari is the highest-paid basketball coach in the country, making $9.2 million this year, according to the USA Today Sports database.) Once Kentucky learned how serious UCLA’s offer was, it offered Calipari, who turned 60 in February, the extension. The school is not looking to substantially enhance Calipari’s annual compensation, but the new contract would include a 10-year term as coach plus a promise to serve as a paid ambassador for the school after his retirement. Calipari’s current contract runs through 2024, after an extension in 2017.

Once Calipari told UCLA he was declining its offer, the school shifted its focus to its next tier of candidates. UCLA representatives have met with former Ohio State coach Thad Matta, but he has withdrawn his name from consideration. UCLA also wants to pursue Virginia coach Tony Bennett, but he has declined to have any conversations until his team is through playing. The Cavaliers will face Auburn on Saturday night at the Final Four in Minneapolis.

Also, it's clear in that clip from the Article that this is what has happened and has already passed because it states Calipari declined and now UCLA is off to it's next desirables.

So no news except Cal is staying, is what I get from this. UCLA just asked for permission to talk to him, probably didn't even talk to him, but rather just made the offer, to which Calipari said thanks, but no thanks.

Great news, especially with that consultant to the program role. He's too important and too influential and too creative not to keep him involved even after he retires.

And since I know it's heading that way, for anyone critical of Cal, establish your criteria for a great coach, in concrete, measurable terms, and then give us your list of great coaches and let's apply it to them. If you can't or won't, then keep your emotional whining to yourself.

Have to laugh at UCLA. Do they really think offering him LESS than he's making at KENTUCKY to come in there and basically rebuild that program? I mean damn, at least roll in with more money!
Exponentially less money considering the taxes in Cali as well. They knew they had no shot. Just wanted to see if he was tired of the fish bowl yet.

Basically Cal led UCLA on then banged the prom queen..again
Not necessarily. UCLA asked UK to speak with him, and of course UK had no problem allowing it. But UCLA probably didn't do a full interview or phone call or anything - they just slapped an offer on the table and Calipari likely said "nope" pretty quickly through his agent, but not after Cal probably had a laugh with Mitch about it, upon which time Mitch decided to slam the door on any hope UCLA may have had to snag him.

Yet leave it to Seth Davis to somewhat make it seem like there was enough interest from Calipari to force UK to come over the top. I'm guessing it never even got close to that point. Calipari isn't leaving for another school, and damned well not to UCLA.

This is interesting as this suggests he will have a major role in choosing the next coach. Unlike Coach K, Cal doesn't really have a set of guys/former players/assistant coaches he is grooming to be head coaches. I wonder (I know it's probably 5-7 years away) who Cal would suggest or push for to take over at UK?

Oh he could’ve shut it down. And I’m good with him playing UCLA.

I posted earlier in the Reid Travis thread that yesterday’s game had the same “vibe” that Cal’s last game at Memphis did in 2009. Not speculating, but it’s almost as if the team had “other” things on their minds. Added that PJ and Herro mentioning AU wanted “it” more.

I am very happy about this. Cals face is now Kentucky basketball for decades to come even after retirement. He’ll be helping make decisions too. Cal is the perfect coach of his age to have in this kind of situation. I promise everyone the rest of the country doesn’t like seeing it.

This is the kind of stuff that keeps you relevant, and looking toward the the future. Indiana died because Bob Knight didn’t help them transition. You have to have these kinds of guys, they know what it takes to win at the highest levels.

I don’t believe the talks were extensive. Cal is just using it as leverage / to feel the fan base and of course it worked and I’m glad it did.

Thanks UCLA.

Hope we hear something on this today haha. Will cry if he goes to UCLA

Yep. Extremely misleading. Basically making it seemed we had to counter offer to keep him. Typical from a dukie. This is to show cal how much he is appreciated and he deserves every single bit of it
