Cal just hinted that Skal leaving ain't a done deal

based on what? daily interaction? or watching him once a week for two hours on tv?
His demeanor on the court smart ass. You don't have to have a daily personal relationship with the kid to see him on national television and his reactions to the game.

Really too early to say. Gun to my head, I say he comes back. I'd be shocked if Briscoe goes pro.

some of you acting like the kid can't dramatically improve if he comes back another year are hilarious. actually, I think he could improve a hell of a lot. the talent is there offensively. he just needs to refine things, and get a lot stronger.

Man, hope Skal gets it together, because I think this might be his one chance with Kentucky. A lot of talent coming in, so much so that Cal isn't/won't need to give him minutes if he's not ready for the spot light. I mean, hell, Lee is going to play over him next year at this rate.

He can improve, but the problem is it isn't JUST being a bit over-ranked coming out of HS, it's that I really have yet to see him enjoying his time here. Forget his stat lines, I personally don't care about that. But he's just going through the motions at this point. He constantly looks like his dog died.

Skal will be back next year IMO. Talked to Frank Ramsey today and Frank said he get pushed around to much. Needs more strength. Great offense skills but still weak.
No offense but most of us don't need Mr. Ramsey to tell us that. We have eyeballs.

It worked for WCS by him returning for a 3rd season it helped him get drafted 6th. Had he went after his so year he would have only been a 18-25 pick.

Not only he got to play in a FF he also got more money.

When Oscar Combs indicated that he may come back, Matt Jones laughed at him like he was an idiot for saying that. I hate how Matt disrespects him and thinks he is all knowing. What an arrogant a$$
Uhhhh yeahhhuh......... but he's consistant.

It should be noted that he scored 9 points in 14 minutes last night. He actually looked good offensively. Hit a couple nice jumpers off the pick and roll. He just kept getting awful fouls. I swear the last 2 were non-existent. But if he learns to defend without fouling that help him stay on the floor long enough to potentially have a couple decent games.

Not a knock on Skal, but I don't see how he could handle the pro life at this time because to me he still is and acts like a kid. Hear me out....he still has that look in his eye of unknowing, fear, doubt and every other look that normal freshmen have when thrown into a game of men. John Wall was a man when entering college. Demarcus was a man. Bledsoe. Towns. Randle. Nerlens. So on and so forth. Skal to me seems to still be a normal kid and that isn't a bad thing. I do hope to see him turn the corner because he seems to have crazy potential.
agree with you here.
I think saying that will take some pressure off of Skal to perform this year - and he'll improve partly because of that

you guys realize that the NBA isn't the only league that pays $ to play basketball right?

Dude is from Haiti, which is basically the poorest country on the planet and i'm pretty sure he isn't an orphan......so he has a family that likes to eat food

don't count on him coming back

Living on The Yacht for an extra year isn't that much of a sacrifice.

Cal can say whatever he wants, but Skal is gonna make the decision based on what he wants to do just like every other player that has come through here.
And in listening to Cal over the years, that is exactly what he wants Skal to do. He'll coach him how he see's fit to do so, tell him at the end of the year what he thinks his draft stock is, after talking to his contacts in the NBA, and then let Skal do what he wants. It has worked out for the most part.

I dont think it would be a realistic expectation unless we see major improvement this season, and if that happens it would probably be enough for him to leave.

I love how people are already anointing next year's class based on some mixtapes. If Skal comes back he will get his.

Seems directed at me. There is nothing to indicate, right now, that Skal will "get his" next year. That can absolutely change, but it has to be more than just production, and that what makes me just a little apprehensive on his situation.

I'm normally the one AGAINST overhyping recruits coming in. The college game is a whole different level than HS. But it IS a good class coming in, with a lot of top15 talent. Not to mention we still may get another recruit. You may see a player falter, but I can't imagine our 2016 incoming class doesn't kill it.

Playing time isn't going to be easy to come by. And it doesn't matter if you're a freshman or a senior to Cal. Skal needs to get hungry if he wants to eat.

Ridiculous. There have been players develop into NBA players that were not one and done prospects, believe it or not.

You've got younger segment on these boards that believes

1. Players Do not develop on the college level.
2. The D league is always better for development.
3. If you can go, you should always go.

They don't even bother to look around through the years and see the exact opposite, and some people actually buy into coach Cals selling points. It's actually very funny.

Maturity is what it is. Guess who was the most immature player on last year's team?

KAT.

My boys know him well. Good kid but definitely a very young mindset.

From you recent postings Matt seems somewhat like you.

I don't get why people say "Oh if he comes back he wont play" That's BS man. Straight up. If he comes back for his Sophomore year he'll have a full year of experience under his belt. So he'll be more experienced. He'll be more confident and comfortable. He'll be bigger and stronger, and he'll have a completely different mindset. Skal in his Sophomore year would probably be the best big man in the country and the number 1 pick in that draft.
What has he shown you against legit college comp that even remotely makes you think he would be the #1 pick in any draft?

I'd make the argument that if you don't have confidence or fire in your first year, the probability of this staying the same is substantially higher than a freshman's first year. You are who you are. It took poythress more than a year, it took Miller more than a year.

I'm going to keep saying this on this board until everybody understands. We still very much need a back to the basket scorer on next year's team like a Cousins, Randle or Towns. A consistent low post scorer is by percentage typically the most efficient player on the court with scoring and generates the highest percentage shot attempts. It's why guard dominated teams with little post scoring almost always fall in March early. Bam does a lot of things really well but he has no post moves right now. I was hoping Bolden would be the guy to provide next year's team with low post scoring but having Skal back would likely be just as good if not better because Bolden does not have the defensive length of Skal.

Holy Crap! .......that's it , all we have to do is keep him from becoming a man and he'll stay! Why didn't Cal think of that?

That is of course not what happened at all. Oscar and I were talking about the likelihood of Skal coming back and I said for him to give a percentage chance...he said 80% and I laughed and said my percentage was 10-20%. Mike Pratt then walked by and said his NBA people still tell him Skal will be a lottery pick at which point Oscar admitted that he just said the 80% to get a reaction from me. We both laughed the entire way through and after the segment was over, he smiled off the air and said "that was great radio."

What you heard were two people who genuinely like each other giving each other a hard time on the radio. Oscar is one of my favorite people on Earth and is a great friend. It is due to my tremendous respect for him that I so look forward to doing that show. Whatever you think of me, I can guarantee you that I show no disrespect towards a guy that I consider to be a UK legend.

20.1 minutes per game for 13 games equals 261.3 total minutes. So yeah... In 4hrs and 21 minutes of watching Skal play I think it is possible to pick up on a few things.

Try again some other time junior.

To me, it seemed like Cal changed gears on Skal when he started Lee and Poy. Before that, Cal was content to let Skal play through it in an effort to not hurt his draft stock. But since bringing him off the bench, I really think at that point Cal shifted to a 2 year+ plan with Skal. Its like hes having to completely rebuild his game from square 1.

Ridiculous. There have been players develop into NBA players that were not one and done prospects, believe it or not.
So you think if he keeps this up, and as a result comes back, he magically turns into a lottery pick over the offseason? If he doesn't improve significantly this year, it's extremely unlikely he improves enough and gets enough playing time to make it matter in the draft next year. If it were to happen it would be two or three years down the road. I'd rather him be good enough to leave this year, otherwise this team isn't doing anything in the postseason.

I told you a long time ago on air you would evolve into Oscar Combs. Congrats and you've earned it. You guys are great radio.

I still think I should have been the co-host. I really need to start calling again.

well I talked to the guy in the Applebees parking lot who said Skal would be back; he knows because he sells jerseys

I bought one of the Jamal Mercer jerseys. It was so realistic that it hive me the chills. I wore it the first time during the midnight Terrence-gate posting. It helped me track Coach Cal's flights.
