Buzz Williams teaches his teamabout the National Anthem

First and foremost thanks to all who served our country.

To those who don't understand the song or the deep meaning, I encourage you to take a trip to the museum of National History in Washington DC and see the actual flag this was written about and read all the notes and meanings behind the song there.

We went last fall and nothing moved me more than that display. It was quite incredible.

I have so much respect for Coach Williams after this, and will be rooting for his team whenever they play now. Unless it's against us.

Actually the lyrics are pretty clear, the sentences are just arranged differently to what we're used to hearing today.

The author of the poem (Francis Scott Key) was being held prisoner on a British ship at the time of the Battle of Fort Mchenry, and watched the bombardment overnight, observing the flag flying throughout the attack. Once the sun came up (by the dawn's early light) he saw that the flag was still flying, and that the British attack had been repelled.

The syntax is garbled because it written in the grandiloquent fashion of the 19th century. And Its inner time is scrambled or contradictory-- the speaker asks for assurance that the flag is flying but already knows it is because the fight is continuing. And I suspect that "spangled" was a dead "poetic" word even then. As for stirring patriotic feelings The Battle Hymn of the Repunlic or America the Beautiful work far better for me.

We sure do have some posters who think being critical of that song is akin to blasphemy.

You sure do like to think you are smarter than everyone else. Did you serve?

Cousin Eddie I imagine it was right before practice and he was hoping to teach them a lesson.....but it would have definitely more formal.
No doubt before practice. Just kind of weird looking at all those servicemen in their formal and dress blues, etc while he's in sweat shorts. No big deal though . . . just think it should have been considered though. Still, good for him!

Unintelligible lyric, dreadful melody, about a war they fought to a draw after the Brits burned the White House. They should pick something else. Maybe Battle Hymn of the Republic or Buddy Can You Spare a Dime.

You're nothing but a far left zealot coward, and now everyone knows.

There's a special place in hell for your type, and we need to just start pulling out the firing squad on them.rid this country of the filth.

Put this coward on ignore. Good God what a bunch of mindless drivel.

Of course not. He's sitting comfortable behind his community college professor chair somewhere because those men allowed him to. He's a typical left wing coward. Just put him on ignore.

You want to have him killed? Because you don't agree with him?

And so is mine.

He's an asshat. A lunatic. A fringe ideological and disrespectful POS. I've burried friends, family, and watched my grandfather suffer until his death for that flag and that song. I can say whatever the hell I want about that scum. He knows why he said it. He hates his country. The same country that awards him the freedom to be the POS he is.

Deal with it.

For all the far out left wingers, you are getting what you want today. They world is going to hell. Let these men have a thread respecting their service and lives. Have some RESPECT, and get out of the thread.

Teachable moe, that's Terrible. You really are a bad guy at heart.

I want to thank all of you who served this country, that gave me the chance to live my dream, and not be forced into service. Because of you, I get to live my dreams, and don't die protecting them.

Ignore the evil men that you also gave the right to speak. You are the heroes of this country; and the reason everyone wants to be here around the world.

Impressive and needs to be done on the NFL level as well. It's not about perfection and ceremony. It's about respect (well taught here by Coach Williams), gratitude and dare I say patriotism (which should unite us rather than divide us). Coach did a great job personalizing to his players the reality of what so many of us take for granted and feel far removed from. In a world that celebrates Gronk's party cruise, a visit to some recovering wounded warriors would also do all these college athletes a world of good as well.

moe, stop being so iconoclastic.

The obscurity of the lyric and the awkwardness of the tune -- originally a drinking song -- are common complaints about the song. Not iconoclastic at all. I have no idea where the venom has come from. Some of the most extreme things about me came from someone I remember from a Political thread. It's a mistake a tread in the Politics thread. So maybe the venom is a leftover from political discussions. My comments about the song have no political ax to grind. They're purely aesthetic. And I love The Battle Hymn of the Republic since Dad would tear up when it was played.

Why is there an automatic assumption that because someone is "left-wing" (they may not even be) that they hate the country? Do Republicans have a monopoly on being patriotic? I also think it's a little overreaction to call someone scum just because they don't think the National Anthem is a great song. In addition, the world is "going to hell" as you say because of actions by both Republicans and Democrats. Maybe if the Republicans actually got with the 21st century, the left wingers wouldn't always be "getting what they want".

This is ridiculous. Who said anything about republicans and democrats. YOU.

moe is absolutely of a left wing mold, of Western European philosophy. He's got the stink all over him, and his type always hate the country that gave him so much.

This thread should just be left to the people who have RESPECT for those men. The ideologues that come into these threads or conversations to stir the pot are just bad human beings.

I wasn't getting political; merely pointing out an ideology that is corrosive.

Why can't a thread like this be left alone by his type? Why? If you don't want to be respectful then just pass by. No one cares about his over the top stance on our national anthem. THis thread was not about that.

Respect to Buzz. Always seemed like a good dude.

Now to the pissing match:

Why is there an automatic assumption that because someone is "left-wing" (they may not even be) that they hate the country? Do Republicans have a monopoly on being patriotic? The people who pick a political team and staunchly defend it while declaring anyone who disagrees some sort of enemy are absolutely effing terrible. I'll say it again, if you (not guy I quoted, just people in general) think the Democratic Party or the GOP is infallible, you're an idiot. Too dumb to live. Seriously.

All Democrats aren't America-hating, tree-hugging pansies and all Republicans aren't racist old men yearning to live in 1955. There's a lot of middle ground, but right-wing radio/TV and left-wing TV teach the sheep that everything must be said in absolutes and it's "us against them."

Oh god.

This thread was about teaching respect to men of war to young men who don't learn a lot about it in today's society and educational system, especially at universities. It was nice to see. In comes a Western European ideologue like moe, to stir the pot, and now anyone going against him is a dang ole publican!!!!!

It takes a sick and twisted individual to do what he did. To hell with a republican and democrat conversation. News flash: right and left wing isn't an American political system like some try and make it. it's an ideology. People need to learn how to distinguish an ideology from a political system. Some of you need my 11th grade American government class badly.

In this case, I used "left wing" and "Western European philosophy" because typically it isn't right wingers trashing all things military related. Duh.

The National Anthem and the flag didn't have any special meaning to me before I was 19. I respected them both, but never got emotional or felt much when standing for both. Once I was sworn into the Navy, just taking the oath...it took on an entire different meaning for me. To this day I get a bit emotional during the National Anthem and looking at that flag swaying in the breeze.

im considered to be far-left if you ask my friends and coworkers. i feel im as patriotic as anyone that hasnt served thats posting in this thread. i contribute to veterens programs and charities, have sent care packages over seas, and a son on 2 tours. i agree about being respectful for what the thread was intented for but, its an anonymous message board. people get kicks outta stirring the pot. moe had you mentioning a firing squad, ha! its message board bait and you took it hook, line, and sinker.

Its clear that teachable moe is a educated person by his command of the english language......but I have always heard of people that were educated beyond their intelligence...I am slow to discredit anyone because I have sufficient shortcomings myself but when you discredit or make light of the National Anthem or any other Patriotic theme especially in the world environment we are living in you are out of bounds.

Just another attention whore seeking out a reaction. The message wasn't about the song. It's about sacrifice, respect, and being thankful for the opportunities you are being afforded in life because of the actions of those who made those sacrifices. Grow up or STFU.

If a person prefers Amazing Grace to A Mighty Fortress, does that make that person a heretic?
So you didn't serve. What shock. If you had served you would understand why you sound moronic and ungrateful. But something tells me you have been like that before.
You don't respect it and you are not grown up enough to respect those that do. That makes you an immature spoiled brat. Oh and your comparison of Christian songs was not comparative to a song that is used universally to represent a country

Come on guys take it easy on Moe, and the others like him. They are just attempting to be cool and hip. Being anti-america seems to be the trendy thing these days. I just want one of them to spout off with their bs around a vet that has served in a combat zone..i'd pay good money to see that confrontation.

For as much as you profess to love the US and what it stands for, there is far more French Revolution in your responses than there is American.

And while those posts criticizing the anthem were pathetic, responses like yours above are just as disrespectful to the ideals that guided this nation's founding.

I don't care. I'm sick of it. Thanks for professing your love of country and paying respects to the posters who've served instead of taking up sides on an issue that moe started to begin with. I noticed you cared more about taking issue with me and siding with that scumbag.

Some of you ideologues just can't help yourselves. It's ideology over respect every single time.

I didn't understand the venom here so I went back and re-read the thread from the start. I hadn't read, first time through, the Johnny Gentile post. My post wasn't in response to that at all. So, I'm just going to blissfully assume that everyone with anger in their hearts has been reading my stuff through the lens of that context. Mine wasn't about the coach's speech. I thought that issue had been covered repeatedly. My post was merely about the song as a song. If that's still anathema to people, well. that's my burden to bear. But as with the Briscoe shot thread, the issue has passed beyond beating a dead horse and has turned the horse into dog food, glue, and sofa stuffing.

Anyone who wants to put me on ignore, you have my blessing, since I've put on ignore anyone who has hinted at violence.
