You're not too familiar with Northern California, are you? You're right, Berkeley (you spelled it incorrectly) is close to the beach, but not the type of beach you're thinking of. The beaches filled with bikini-clad women laying out are in Southern California. Northern California beaches are typically filled with hoodies and bonfires (outside of the dozen or so days a year where it's warm and sunny).
