Saw this posted on twitter. No good shooter puts the ball in their palm when they shoot. There is a gap and the ball should be on his fingertips. Get him in the gym to shoot with the ball on his fingertips. Small tweak, but it is most certainly one that could help his percentages.

Screwball? knuckleball? Not sure what kind of ball flight he's going for there, but it ain't good. If that pic is his actual pre-release, can't imagine why the coaches haven't fixed it. Or maybe it's just a "moment-in-time" pic where in the very next frame he goes to more of a finger-tip shot.

Might want to look and Moody's free throw shooting. I was thinking he shot the same way with his palm on the ball like that and it didn't seem to effect his shot. I might have looked at it wrong.

Shooting the ball from your palm tends to make a dead ball(little spin) you get more touch and back spin with the ball coming off your finger tips. If anyone ever wanted to see the perfect jump shot form, go find pictures of Macy back in college, he has picture perfect form.

I totally agree with you. I just thought moody shot the same way.

OP is correct, the ball shouldn't rest in the palm. Although I've seen other pics of him and it doesn't seem to be in his palm like these pics are.

My biggest thing is nothing is in alignment there. The right hand is not in alignment with the goal. Look at where the seams are pointing. They're pointing left of the goal. That's because his right arm is misaligned. When that happens it leads to that "jerky" motion trying to straighten it out.

Also, the left hand should never be on the front of the ball like that. When it is it will impart sidespin and affect the shot.

It's like in golf. If you aren't lined up correctly you aren't going to hit it straight. If he gets that right arm in proper alignment and the left hand off the front of it he'll improve drastically.

If only we had an overzealous fan who could run into him and give him a few pointers. Rayodar did that for ramel Bradley and it really seemed to help.

This picture proves nothing. This doesn't show what happens upon release of the ball. All this shows is how he's holding the ball at this particular moment. He obviously doesn't just push the ball from that location or else he'd throw up knuckle balls all day. While the form may be a little unorthodox, I don't think it really proves much until you can see the entire shot, especially the release.

Briscoe left hand too much on the front of the ball instead of the side....This affects the direction of the ball in a wayward manner

Get the left hand on the side of the ball and his shooting improves immediately

This is true,

this causes extra spin on the ball, and creates extra arch in his shot. He just need to shoot lightly, but it's like he's shooting the ball over a defense. Bounces too much and makes it more difficult shot.

but then again, this is free throw. It's still not a difficult shot. I think he's too stressed over it. Relax and lay the ball in...

A closer look will actually reveal the specific problem with his shot that Cal is too blind to see......

Palm or no Palm is not why he is missing shots. Look how off he is! Briscoe stands back about 10'' from the line. For some reason he thinks his shot is too hard. Trying to compensate for something that really should not be that big of an issue. At this point he is scared to step up to that line.

But what do I know? I just wrap cars for a living!

Not a simple fix as shooting is repetition and muscle memory. Hornsby from LSU has a windup-like form yet he is pretty good because it's consistent. It's ok to have an unorthodox form as long as you are consistent with it. To mess around with his form now would be a bad idea.

usually that's true, but it can't get any worse. :-D

One of the knocks on Cal over the years, true or not, is that his teams are not good free throw shooting teams. Probably got it pegged on him after the Memphis NC game and some will swear by it even if we shoot 80% from the line every year. But, question...has anyone heard of Cal ever bringing in a free throw shooting 'guru' to work with the team...past or present? I know over the years I've heard of different coaches doing it. Perhaps just in preseason. Or is this prevented by NCAA rules?

Never a bad idea, but at the same time if we're only bringing these guys in for 1 year then what's the point. Can't change them overnight in most cases & the OAD's aren't in the program long enough.

The ball definitely has to come off the fingertips when the shot takes place. I can't tell if it does or does not in this picture because the ball is still in his hands. I see a much bigger problem in the placement of his left hand. That alone will produce a very poor ball flight. How has the coaching staff not addressed this?

Notice he also blocks his vision of the basket with the ball. Basically shooting with one eye on the target, ball not on his fingertips, and guide hand not on the side of the ball.
He should tuck his right elbow to his side before bringing the ball into his shooting motion. I can't understand why free throws seem so difficult to certain players. Really anything under 65- 70% for a guard is just poor.

I have been saying this all year his left hand is the problem to tight on the ball it stays on the ball too long and you do need to get it off of your palm!

Or you can simply bench him and play somebody else until he learns basic fundamentals of basketball.

If he had been bad in high school I would agree but he was a good ft shooter back then. The OP might be right, it could just be a minor adjustment.

Yao Ming was a career 83.3% free throw shooter in the NBA. That's a heck of a good job considering he was locking his own shot with his left hand!
