Brad Underwood: UK kept letting us back in. It's what they do.

Well a few of us who were watching from our couches--knew that Illinois would give UK ANY good look they wanted--Cats just needed to make the shots. They did. Also hilarious how SVG on the telecast confirmed that-how the Cats were getting any look they wanted.

BTW--when you get a train run on you like Illini did in MSG as their "home game" against Duke-and Iowa was putting up 90 on you--STFU. This is a man who gave up a 30-2 run in an Elite 8 game last year. At some point when you are the HC of all these teams--it's on YOU-not them.
Yea, run your mouth after getting run over by a 1st year coach who wins his 1st tournament game 2 days earlier.

What a loser.

They started hitting contested 3s to make the game not embarrassing. We controlled the entire second half pretty easily.
And the refs were calling fouls everytime Illini bullied their way to the basket...and UK got not foul calls doing the same (I think Illini had 3 fouls against with 5 minutes left in game).

UK controlled that game in 2nd half as you mentioned. Our offensive sets from start of 2nd half to 10 minute mark were exceptional display IMO. Pope deserves major props for the offensive acumen of this team.

WTH. Are you just frustrated or what? There wasn’t anything in his post worth getting your panties in a wad over. Some of you guys need to chill a little.

Yeah in todays game with the 3 pointer EVERY team lets the other guys back in it several times during a game. Teams can just score in bunches anymore with the 3 and once a team relaxes some 7-0 runs are pretty common.

I felt like the broadcast desperately wanted Illinois back in it. We'd be up 15 and they'd score 4 straight and the announcers would start hyping it up like it was a huge deal. Felt fairly comfortable for a tournament game honestly. I usually assume something will happen and we'll lose in heartbreaking fashion. We were clearly better than that team

We did make some stupid turnovers and missed some FTs in the 2nd half, but they got no closer than 9.
So "letting us back in" is a bit of an overstatement.
Illinois started the half down 5 and they were as close as 6 with 1:36 left in the game.

Our guys had to love actually being able to play a game where they weren't being violently attacked every time they drove to the basket.

Like I said earlier our coach wasn't the one talking shit.
True. I would bet Mark Pope never does though. I’m curious if any footage exists of him talking shit as a player. I remember him getting pumped up and excited after big plays for sure.

I’d like to thank Mr underwood for having a good enough year to make us an underdog.

That, along with Baka being a 5 point favorite and ole miss being a huge dog made a GREAT 3 leg parlay that wasn’t even a sweat.

It's the NCAA Tournament. A lot of good teams struggled with putting teams away with big leads. We still would have won by 15 if we didn't ease up at the end and let them hit garbage baskets. It also didn't help us that they only had 1 foul in the first 8 and a half minutes and 3 with I think 7 or 8 minutes to go. Then calling fouls on us on multiple possessions in a row. Hard to pull away like that
Seems they called a foul on us prob 5-6 straight possessions, so it seemed but didn't call anything on Illinois for most of the 2nd half

Considering that we had a double digit lead pretty much the entire 2nd half. After halftime were they ever even in the game
They were in it when we went into the half, they had cut our lead to 5, but it took about a minute for us to come out of the gate firing on all cylinders in the second half and erase that doubt.

I mean he ain't wrong but still. Didn't like hearing that.
The truth is hard to hear at times. I posted throughout the game that this team has no situational awareness. They shoot themselves into big leads and with the same running and gunning approach, shoot themselves out of leads.

Pope is going to do the same all game for the most part. We don’t want the same issue Cal’s team’s had play not to lose rather than to win.

yeah, but it's not everyone. Just certain kids who seem to lose track of time and score and situation. I don't want to name names. But I will say by the end I was yelling "Butler and Brea, and everyone else go to the other end of the court!" heh

It isn't about playing not to lose. It is about valuing the ball and taking good shots. I am not suggesting playing some kind of delay game. If you are down 20 points, you need lots of shots to come back. When you are launching and missing lots of quick shots, you are providing the opposing team the number of shots they need to possibly make a comeback.
