Bourbon: What are you sipping on?

Hey Modern, now you have spoken with someone who dislikes Angel's Envy. lol I really hate that stuff. If someone died and willed me a case,i would contest the will..

This has been a fun thread and I am glad that it is continuing.

high west and smooth ambler are the only two sourcing companies that i have come to trust almost completely. they have a knack for finding and maintaining a certain unique flavor profile, and the single barrel offerings from smooth ambler have been great every time.

to a more limited degree, the medley bros. bourbon is a high-proof sourced bourbon that is extremely affordable and tasty for how it's marketed. i won't vouch for the "old medley" and such, but the standard white label medley bros. is a great bargain.

Went to a Kentucky Owl bourbon tasting/dinner at the Beaumont Inn over the weekend. Dixon Dedmon was a great host. After the dinner was over, Dixon talked about bringing back Kentucky Owl. After he finished talking, 30 of us had a after dinner party/tasting. Had some great bottles. 25yo Michters, 16yo AH Hirsch were the highlights. Both of those were probably the best I've had, ever!

The Bib and Tucker was awful. Try to avoid at all costs! There were some other heavy hitters on the bar. Parkers 27, 10, and 13. Evan Williams 23. Some SAOS store barrel picks. Jeffersons 25, 21rye.

Im more of a low baller. Jim Beam, Wild Turkey does it for me. Devils cut wasn't bad.

I went big shot this weekend and got a pint of Makers. I am probably gonna snag some Basil Hayden next trip.

Confession: I have found several Jefferson's Oceans bottles around and have skipped every one. Hard to pay 85+ for Jefferson's O when I consider Jef Res on the bottom end for my taste.

Is that a mistake? Are they similar in any way?

Feel better now...

The first was real good. Couldn't get the second release, but heard it was ok. I paid $100 for the first release just because it was something new and different. Found a bunch of the last release for $85-$100 and passed. Heard it sucked. I really think its just a gimmick. You probably did yourself a favor...

I don't think it's really a gimmick, per say. There are a number of craft distilleries now that agitate barrels to accelerate aging. Many major distilleries have rotated them periodically in their warehouses to achieve the same effect slowly over time.

Not sure it's wonderful or anything. The previous two releases were pretty good, and I have a bottle of the 3rd I haven't opened yet. I'm 90% sure it's just MGP juice now, which, frankly, is just starting to seem boring (since it's everywhere.)

Just came down at halftime of the game and poured me a Rowans Creek. This is really good stuff. Pick some up if you haven't tried it.

Anyone in Louisville know where I can find some Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond 100 proof? Really been wanting to try this for the price.

Thanks Bill. Evergreen had plenty. Picked up a few, doing a SBS with some other

I haven't tried their BT, but their Four Roses Single Barrel pick was pretty tasty. I've got a couple bottles of the HH6 at home...hard to argue with such a smooth oak-forward flavor profile for about $13. Same general profile as Elijah Craig, but younger and stronger.

We posted our "Best Bottom-Shelf Bourbons" today, so we must be thinking along the same lines. I've done an ongoing "Budget Bourbon Battle Royale" on the site as well, and this post just summarizes that, along with a few that weren't included. Let me know what you think of any of them.

Bottom Shelf Bourbons

Great list. It appears I need to check out the OFBIB and the OFSig. Never had either but your reviews sound great. I really enjoy the VOB and EW. Recently switched from searching for hard to find stuff, to trying numerous store selections and great tasting everyday drinking value pours. Having more fun and finding amazing quality in bourbon is out there ranging from $15-60.

Any local store selections on your radar currently?

Your website is really well done and informative, have it bookmarked now, and will continue to follow. Cheers

Really bummed out about Four Roses dropping their Limited Edition Single Barrel. Each year, those were some of the best bourbon on the market.

I've been buying up all the Bourbon Society Private Selections I can get lately. They're done through Westport Whiskey & Wine, so you can buy them from the store if you're not a bourbon society member/attendee. Chris, from WW&W, runs the barrel selection committee, so anything he picks in his store in addition to the Society stuff is usually fantastic.

He had a 10 year Willett in late 2013/early 2014 that is an amazing pour. I've only got a 2 ounce sample left, though,. unfortunately.

Thanks for checking out the site! We've really grown in the past 6 months. We were just over 22,000 unique visitors in December alone, which is our high thus far. We've got media passes for the Bourbon Classic next month, and will be covering that. Pretty excited for it.

Craziness. Never thought I'd have to stock up on this stuff. Eventually found a bottle at State Liquors in St. M.
There were 6 or 8 bottles of eagle rare at Liquor Barn in Springhurst yesterday around noon for about $30. I actually see it pretty often, to be honest.
If you're still buying Eagle rare, Evergreen has a bunch of it in the old bottles that are still labeled "Single Barrel." Some people claim it tastes batched these days, and hunt for the older bottles.

Thanks for the tip on Eagle Rare. Love the older stuff. Evergreen also has a barrel selection of Buffalo Trace that according to the store is aged an extra 15 months that is fantastic. If you like the BT mashbill, this stuff is awesome, and only $24 a bottle.

It's a 2-day bourbon event at the KY Center for the Arts (well, 5 days for media since they're taking writers around to all sorts of tours and such).

Lots of tastings, presentations, lectures, discussions, exhibits, receptions, dinners, etc.

Bourbon Classic

Ya know, I had a pretty good inventory of ER since it has been my go to for many a year and just recently had to get some more as I had ran out. I can attest the bottle I recently bought was not what I had grown used to. They are doing something to it and most likely it is younger and batched all because of the inventory crunches. I have heard that excuse before, but it does make sense.

Update on others:

-Liking the Michter's Toasted Barrel more now than I did before. Still not my favorite, but a good poor.

-OESK Liquor Barn 4RSB is my favorite bottle of all time, but I just picked up a bottle of OESV. Haven't had it yet, but I am giddy about it already.

-Grabbed a bottle of Old Forester SB Liquor Barn Select tonight. Read some reviews online and they were so-so, but I like this stuff. Not as full bodied as my normal preference, but this stuff is pretty good, medium bodied and easy drinking.

As you can tell I've become a fan of the LiquorBarn Selections of bourbons. Whoever they have doing their selections has nearly the same flavor preference as I do.

I think Liquor Barn does a great job with the store selections. While you are out hunting I strongly recommend the store selections at Westport Wine & Spirits and Evergreen Liquors. Been very impressed with everything I have purchased, enough so, that multiple bottles hit the bunker.

Evergreen currently has a selection of ER 10 year.

I like it that Liquor Barn has somewhat of a continuous flow of selections every month. Their Weller selections are outstanding if you can get them or are not sold out. I've been dabbling with their tequila selections lately as well. Pretty good stuff.

Westport Whiskey & Wine is my favorite for store selections. Liquor Barn has had some amazing ones (OWA) and some terrible ones (8 year Willett a year or so ago).

I tried the newer Eagle Rare recently and didn't care for it. Sort of muted flavors all around. At first, I thought that must be due to reading other reviews who declared that they'd ruined it when they dropped the single barrel logo. But I opened a 375 of the old bottling for a side by side and it confirmed to me that the flavors taste batched. Disappointing.

On another note, I was on the Media Tour for the Bourbon classic last Wednesday through Friday and my liver is crying for a rest, so I'm detoxing this week. But our trip to the Barton 1792 on Wednesday was eye popping, as we got to draw bourbon straight from a barrel and try it. It was among the better bourbons I've had in the past year. They have no current plans to sell it at barrel proof, but it was unbelievable, and put the flask of Elijah Craig barrel proof I was carrying to shame.

I've not given 1792 a lot of thought, but now I'm going to snatch up a barrel pick of it when I get a chance.

Always thought 1792 as a good mixer on the lines of MM.

Heard a lot of the same complaints about 1792 since they dropped the (8) year age statement. I am starting to see the newly branded 1792 bottles around Louisville. It is good to hear you have a favorable impression of the newer stuff. Other forums I had visited were really down on the new no age stated stuff, it almost mirrored your thoughts on Eagle Rare above.

MTBill....I tried to pull up your link to the better lower-shelf bourbons but it kept saying the page is not found. Can you re-link the article?

1792 is totally underrated. The aromas take a second to develop, but once it opens up, it's pretty good. Ken Pierce does a good job with that brand. Enthusiasts have traditionally knocked it based on its Barton lineage but he is putting out a good product. It will become allocated by the end of the year like the rest of Sazeracs portfolio.

Willet Estate selections are WAY overpriced, good or bad. The selections also stay in the barrel around a year to 16 months after they've been selected, which in my opinion, means it won't be like what the selectors tasted when they chose their barrels. Mostly related to their ability to hand-bottle. Most are good, some not(LB 8yr). I did have a 12yr from LB that was damn good and a 6 yr that was really good at barrel proof, but again, too expensive for single digit ages. I had a 10 yr at silver dollar last yr that was great, maybe 10 is the sweet spot.

Eagle rare moved their age statement to the back label, I'd bet it's just part of the process of removing it from the brand completely in the future.

Chris does a good job at WWW, however, I've had a few I did not care for, so I stopped getting his. Some were too sweet, one Eagle Rare I picked up was so close to the regular bottle I had at home, I didn't see the point in the selection.

I've not had any of the evergreen selections, I'll have to check them out, they are kind of out of my way, so I'm just not by there much, but will find my way over there for sure.

Binnys in Chicago does a good job on picks, too...if you're ever up that way.

One reason I do LB so much, it's fairly convenient for me from work or home, so maybe it's laziness :) The Weller from December, and I got one last week as well, that were fn awesome, especially for $24. The four roses recipes are also typically high quality.

Drinking bourbon from the barrel is about as good as it gets. I call it the "truth". Can lead to some real interesting evenings with unfiltered barrel samples.

I'm having an ETL LB selection from last year in my UK 2012 championship highball right now. Pretty tasty.

If you like good tequila, LB has a Patron Anejo barrel selection that is one of the best anejos Ive ever had. Super smooth. Barrel 27 if your looking.

As far as age statements go, well...they are going away from most groups, scotch included, just not enough juice but should start evening out next year for some brands, but don't look for the age statements to come back regardless.

Spent the night last night with Old Forester SB and it isn't bad. Not nearly worth the $40 I paid for it. Label says Chris Morris is master distiller so this is Woodford related product, didn't know that because I don't really keep up with Woodford or Old Forester. It has that same 'jammy' nose that the Woody Master Select pinot noir bottle has, but not the body. Not a huge fan of either, but I'll drink them both. You can certainly tell this is related to Woody in some ways. Has to be.

Woodford uses mash from Old Forester in every batch. Both are Brown Foreman products, of which Chris is the "Bourbon" Master Distiller (Jack Daniels and other liquors have their own master distillers under the BF umbrella also). I just had a tasting with Chris last week during the media tour for the Bourbon Classic.

BF has issues with Woodford. It's made in a copper pot still and for some reason, they can't get a slight metallic flavor out of the distillate. To calm that, they add OF new make from the BF column still in Louisville which doesn't have that flavor at all. If you do a side by side of any OF and WR, you'll notice some similarities, but you should be able to taste that copper still influence on the WR. It's the main reason I don't like woodford (though double oak is fine, and the new rye is smooth).

Ironically, at the media tour last week, I also had the opportunity to taste new make and 1 year old distillate (aged in Bardstown) from the new Evan Williams Experience (also a copper pot still) last week and do a side-by-side with the column still distillate from Bernheim and it's completely different. Bernheim's new make is hugely corn-forward...so much so that my buddy showed Charlie Downs and Denny Potter a photo of canned corn to describe his impressions. The new make from the Evan Williams pot still, however, is incredibly sweet and, frankly, pretty drinkable right off the still. After 1 year, it's already a solid bourbon due to that sweetness.

Big differences in flavor between the types of stills used.

i much prefer old forester to woodford, for being the lesser known of the family, the old forester signature far outclasses the juice that goes into woodford bottles. that said, the new woodford rye is very enjoyable, it's only 53 percent rye (quite low) and has many more bourbon-y notes than you traditionally see in ryes. i wasn't expecting much going in and was very pleasantly surprised. still probably overpriced by about ten bucks at $35 retail.

also just a heads up, i've been seeing maker's mark cask strength show up in shops in small quantities. i know they've been sending them to retail out-of-state, and thought for sure it'd be a gift shop exclusive here in ky, so that was neat to see.

I wonder if they have steel fittings somewhere in the process/on the still that are affecting the product. They can test the product for heavy metals by ICPMS to get an idea of what they have...
