Bourbon of choice tonight?

jack is tenn whiskey, not bourbon. just saying.
Still corn, but made different. And it's Tennessee. There's the first three strikes against it right there.
If you're talking the most recent Van Winkle releases, then there are tons better than this thin crap they're putting out to replace the old Stitzel-Weller juice.

Barrel proof or bust is what I say.
My understanding that there is no BT produced Pappy ready yet. But news is slow here. I understand that there ARE some SW-BT BLENDS that out for the 15 year old and younger.

It's a bourbon by definition just like any other bourbon. Jack sells it as "Tennessee Whiskey" because it also meets those standards.

Uh, WTF is your deal? Are you going to do this every time I post? I don't recall ever crossing paths with you.
Maybe you are Boston's illegitimate child.

'READ MY POSTS! I DEMAND YOU DO IT! WHAT I SAY IS IMPORTANT, SO READ IT ALL' Ring a bell? That says all I need to know about you. If I misquoted you, I don't care.

No, it doesn't ring a bell but whatever. Have fun pal.

I have bottles of Pappy 23 in the past, but none in the last two years. They ran about 350 here in Florida. Can't imagine there is a 10 year old worth more than a 23 yr. old Van Winkle. All taste and wallet size this week, I guess.

The Pappy appreciation is rampant, each year. 23 is a 1000-1500 on the secondary market. Pappy 10 and 15 is 350 now.

Except that it's not a bourbon. It's Tennessee whiskey because it cannot be a bourbon. Just like sparkling white wines =/= champagne.

I will have Blade and Bow (unopened) if we win. Some Woodford Double Oaked (almost done) in the first half, or if we lose.

Less aging in the barrel I believe. The 10ft. charcoal drop was supposed to be a way to make it take like bourbon, faster than barrel aging. Back in the early 60's, people would buy a cheap bottle of Old Yourmama 4 week old bourbon, and dump in charcoal, let it set for a week, then pour it thru a filter into a Jack Daniels bottle to 'pass'. Since most went into CocaCola, it probably didn't matter.

It meets all the requirements of a bourbon. Bourbon does not have to be made in KY. It has an extra process that most bourbons do not have, but it is technically and legally, a bourbon.

I am not your 'pal'. I don't know who might be. Maybe I went to UK with their grandfather.

had supper than started on makers and coke..glad I did since we have not only Greene tonite but Ayers too

That's the argument that folks everywhere in the world make to support their local product is legal. Even here in Florida, some guy is making a 'single barrel bourbon'. Whatever happened to the requirement that the water run thru dolomite from the Lexington Arch? I don't care what the feds say. I hold to that. Keeps out the Canadian, and Iowa whiskeys from sharing the mantle.

The charcoal actually strips flavor from the distillate. Next time you're in a store, take a look at a Gentleman Jack, it's almost orange and is very light in flavor. It's because it is charcoal filtered a second time after aging, for about four hours, and the charcoal strips flavor and color from the liquid. The people at JD proudly claim this.

I've been to Jack D in Lynchburg 4 times, last year, the guide actually said that jack was "charcoal filtered to filter out that Bourbony flavor". She was proud as hell about it.

I just poured a Rock Hill Farms, might crack something special if we beat the dribbling rat-faces tonight.

Might want to check on that. Just sayin...

From Jack Daniels website...

  1. Jack Daniel's is not a bourbon - it's a Tennessee Whiskey. Jack Daniel's is dripped slowly - drop-by-drop - through ten feet of firmly packed charcoal (made from hard sugar maple) before going into new charred oak barrels for aging.Aug 13, 2013

The liquor store by me put some on the shelf behind the counter for $300. I laughed. Went in yesterday and they still had it. I said " still have those bottles huh? Price still the same?" He said "yea". I laughed again and said "good luck".
Hello: Is there anyway I can find out the location of that liquor store? Thanks!

Lot's of bourbon scalpers! He's gambling on reselling it for 500! LOL!
Best bet is to go outside of bourbon war area. Find an old liquor store that sells quality. Works for me, even down here. No Pappy is sold in Orlando (outside the hotels). National Dist. handles the distribution in Florida, but they don't sell any south of Gainesville. Their loss.

Too sweet!!!!

Any one ever buy a barrel? I have considered it over the years...rolling it into a cooler in the summer, opening it in the winter...rolling it around the house once a week, trying to trick it into thinking it moving around to the center rick...
Though I wonder if you can get a quarter or an eighth barrels. I am getting to old for a full one

Here is a video telling you just what I've told you guys. You are letting a marketing distinction distract you.

You couldn't buy a full barrel to have at home. You could buy an empty barrel, various sizes, fill it with corn whiskey, then age it as you say. Not sure how it would turn out, probably some legal issues there as well, maybe not.

I don't recall posting to you on the football board, I rarely go over there.
Hope I didn't hurt your feelings too bad. I would really hate to hurt YOUR feelings.

The only current legal parameter to be called Tennessee Whiskey...is to be made in Tennessee. JD, and Dickel for that matter, have mash bills that are damn close to 84% corn, 8% rye, 8% barley, which is pretty much bourbon.

There are some in the industry that will tell you that the 10day to 2 week charcoal filtering happens prior to barreling and that is why it's not bourbon, because it's altered pre-barrel.

It's definitely a debate but it's pretty much bourbon but not nearly as good.

well, I have to assume you have the wrong guy. I might have posted over on the football board twice in 10 years and I just searched the last 20 pages over there and couldn't find a single post from me.
Nice rant though.
How long have you been in the sauce tonight pops?

Liquor land. Taylorsville rd in Louisville near Breckinridge lane. Had the 20 for $600 of course I wasn't there today. It was yesterday.

Not accurate. There are no more SW blends left. The last was in the 2012 and maybe the 2013 20 and 23 year bottlings, and even those are still questioned. However, there is no question that 2014 and beyond are all BT at this point. If BT isn't ready, and they're out of SW - what is it then? MGP?

You are closer to the fire than me. It was my understanding that there were no 23's that were strictly BT yet, and that the oldest blend was maybe a 15. No experience or insider info, just what I read.
