Fixin' to head out to Austin this morning, picking out a playlist. Got me to thinking about SEC towns and music. Obviously only Nashville compares to Austin in terms of places to see live music. But in terms of musical talent, UK takes a back seat to no one.

Sturgill Simpson
Chris Stapleton
My Morning Jacket (Jim James attended UK)
Wilco (drummer Glenn Kotche is a UK grad)

That's just off the top of my head, and doesn't count some mainstream country guys. I'm sure I'm missing others.

For its scale Lexington has held its own in the modern era. That Athens list is massive. As always I’m assuming Starkville comes in a hard last place for this one. Nobody wants to claim that sharthole.

Gordon Ramsay did an episode of ‘hotel hell’ about a failing hotel in Starkville. He left out the most important reason that the hotel was failing. Its very existence implies that people want to spend the night in Starkville.

When I moved to Austin in 2006 the music scene was incredible. It still had that local vibe and there were still a lot of Hole In The Wall Joints. The Red River District was a fun time.

There has been so much development now and the landscape has changed. Sixth Street is now open to traffic in an effort to kill the bars there. Music scene is still good but it is but the local vibe is much harder to find. The Continental Club and Antone's will always be legendary music venues.

When I was in College John Michael Montgomery was packing em in every weekend at Austin City Saloon and Troy Lee Gentry (RIP) was always playing somewhere. I believe Troy's parents owned The Grapevine Bar in Tates Creek Center .

I'm headed to Austin later today for the game tonight. Go Cats!
