Best American rock 'n roll band ever?

A flute? Really? I actually like a few of JT's songs but they're not in my Spotify list of liked songs which is > 1200 and growing as I discover newer artists.

Resolution: pare down that list. Has to be 250 songs I could live without, right?

I was going to tout the Allman Brothers . . . but then I watched a bit of a documentary on Jimmy Carter this week, where I found out that ABB were big fans of his, and he liked them as well - Gregg Allman even brought Cher to the White House!! Therefore, since they supported a lib tard dim, I can never hear them the same way again, and will never allow their music in my car or home again.

The Beatles were heavily influenced by a lot of stars in the 50's and copied their styles in their early days.....Chuck Berry, Elvis, Everly Bros, Buddy Holly. One of the bio's I read about John and Paul had a lot of quotes from them about their influences.
-buddy holley and the crickets were a massive influence on the beatles.
When I first heard how John and Paul were influenced by Buddy Holly I put on Please Please Me and sure enough, he’s all over that album.

I’ve got a dozen playlists and the 50’s to early 60’s gets some serious play.

"peer" as in ? Slash was a very good guitarist, he was NOT superior to quite a few of his peers, Duff ? LOL. Steven Adler ? Love me some GNR, but "musically superior to their peers" I would not agree with, which is why we all have our favorites. Motley Crue can match member for member other than Slash, who is a better guitarist than Mick Mars.

They was pretty known for the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll rock star life as well. SO even that part is not true.

Peers - Ratt, Poison, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, and, yes, Motley Crue. I said "last" sex, drugs and rock and roll band. Crue peaked in 89/90 and was done by 92. Guns peaked in 92 and were done in late 93. Done means days as a currently popular act are over. Both are doing/have done well on the nostaliga circuit.

Nikki Sixx is infamous for being one of the worst bass players in a major band. Sixx had to record his parts a few notes at a time for every Motley album prior to Dr. Feelgood when producer Bob Rock made him get lessons. Nikki Sixx mimes his bass parts to backing tracks live today. Duff can play bass, guitar and drums and is well respected as a musician in many genres.

I'll give you Tommy over Adler no contest. It's closer with Matt Sorum skill wise, but I love Tommy's flair. I will take Axl over Vince since his vocal range from low register to high register is (was) insane. Both are hard to listen to live today. Mars and Slash were both great in their own right. In my opinon Izzy Stradlin is what set the two apart. He was the main songwriting force in GNR, and his riffs under Slash's leads gave Guns a fuller sound with two guitars as opposed to one, especially live.

Dr. Feelgood was Motley Crue's most successful album. It sold 6 million records in the US. Classic album. I had it on cassette. Appetitie for Destruction is still the highest selling debut album in the history of American music with 18 million sold in the US, and both Illusions sold 7 million-plus in the U.S. I think it's fair to say Motley Crue had a much longer career, but GNR was bigger if you look at both bands at the peak of their commerical success.

Then grunge killed them both in what seemed like a matter of minutes. I won't talk about that 1994 Motley album with John Corabi or Chinese Democracy. lol.

'Any Major Dude' has to be in the Steely Dan best song list. I wouldn't, by any means, suggest they're the best American band, but Little Feat may be the most underapreciated band ever.

Only one man was talented enough to blend rock, blues and country.

I feel the same about Chris Stapleton. Not many, if any, current singers can sing a bluegrass, rock, country or blues song and make you think that is the only genre they sing. Stapleton has done all and blew every genre out of the water. The dude is just uber talented.

I will agree with your pick, and add to it. Not only did they begin with a pair of the best guitarists of all time in Duane Allman and Dickie Betts. But they ended with two of the best of all time in Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. And....it is my most humble opinion that the final lineup (2001-2014) of the ABB had the single greatest assemblage of talented musicians in the history of American rock, with Derek, Warren, Gregg Allman, Oteil Burbridge, Butch Trucks, Jaimoe, and Marc Quinones.
Derek and Warren together are unreal. I thought Herring played with them some between his time from ARU to WmfP, but could have been a couple guest spots.

Love the docs on old music sessions and studios. Think I've seen about every one thats been made.

Tons of choices and most have been mentioned. All subjective. Saw this one mentioned a few posts ago and I agree, they are about as American as any but all but one was born in Canada. The Band.

Speaking of the Allman Brothers, did anybody here see them in 1970 at Georgetown College? They had already released their first album.

Big fan of both bands. Nikki was more songwriter than talented bass player IMO. I actually put him into the Gene Simmons type group as far as playing ability. But I also add flair and showmanship into the equation, as I do not just factor technical, I was very big into live shows, didn't really focus on technical. Most of the time, blurred mind wouldn't allow me.
My favorite guitar player of all time is not one MOST people would list, Jake E Lee. IMHO, he is one of THE best. George Lynch as well.

If it is who I like would put Tool, GNR, and a few others on there but if going by universally the best probably the Eagles.

I may be wrong, but I thought only Mick Jones, the guitar player, was from the UK and he was, thus, the Foreigner. Again, I may be misremembering something I heard 10+ years ago.
Yeah you're wrong.

Foreigner was formed in April 1976 by former Leslie West Band guitarist Mick Jones, with the original lineup also including former Black Sheep vocalist Lou Gramm, former King Crimson keyboardist and woodwind player Ian McDonald, bassist Ed Gagliardi, former Ian Hunter drummer Dennis Elliott, and keyboardist Al Greenwood.[2

Listened to a pod with Wolfgang and he said that DLR once stated "the greatest rock band in America is 2 Asians and a Jew".

Since technically Eddie and Alex were Indo-Dutch and Michael Anthony is Jewish.

No, Roth was the one who said it. He was speaking on the musicians since he really didn't play an instrument.
