Bad News on Monk

Not gonna speculate on what the drug was, but hope he can get the help he needs.

If it's weed then he's not just using it casually. Adam Silver's gone on record stating that he doesn't care if players smoke or not, so long as they don't abuse it.

“When I’ve talked to players about it, I think they have mixed feelings. It’s not so much about what guys do in the summer,” Silver said. “If they want to smoke pot, whatever, it’s legal in a lot of states. We have no issue with that.”

“One of the things I’ve been talking more about in the past several years is mental wellness of our players,” Silver said. “Some guys are smoking pot in the same way some guys would take a drink. Just using it to calm down a little bit or using it to relax, no big deal. It’s no issue, which is why I think it’s been legalized in a lot of states.

“On the other hand, there’s guys in the league who are smoking a lot of pot,” he added. “Then the question becomes, ‘Well, why are you smoking a lot of pot?’ And that’s where mental wellness comes in. Because I’ve directly talked to players who say I’m smoking a lot of pot because I have a lot of anxiety and I’m struggling.”

And while Silver did acknowledge feelings over the NBA still testing for marijuana was seen as “uncool,” he wanted more research available before making any conclusive decision. Like the NFL, the NBA is studying how the plant could be used for pain management. But the league also wants to be sure because of what possible message they’re sending to kids.

“When we change our policy we have to be really careful because we’re clearly sending a message to young people,” Silver said. “Just like with alcohol, you have to teach young people how to use a substance appropriately and responsibly so it doesn’t overwhelm your life. It’s a complicated issue.”

It is not weed and also not sure how you could abuse it . You either do it or don't . There is no abusing it . It isn't alcohol or Heroin where if you do too much you die or something . I guess you abuse it by smoking it out a cheap pipe? LOL .

what is the definition of “abuse of marijuana”? I’ve known people that smoke everyday but still get up, go to work, and live very productive lives. IMO, I think it’s a lot safer and more responsible to smoke every day than to drink every day. It’s definitely a person by person basis as I’ve know people like I described and I’ve also known burnouts. It all just depends on your own motivation level to succeed and a vision of what you want your future to look like. In my experience, the burnouts I’ve known have no vision and live day to day. The ones that can smoke but are still productive have a very clear vision and know they want to become what they envision for their future. This is all a mute point though as the poster above already determined that the NBA CBA won’t suspend a player an undetermined amount of games for substances like marijuana or PEDs. If I had to speculate, I’d say it is some type of pill like adderoll or oxy.

What's wrong with these people? Thought the NBA was "woke". Hell, it's all good stuff and nothing to see here.

The way it's worded, it's most likely abusing prescription drugs, cocaine, or something like codeine.

I've never seen an open-ended suspension like that before, it just says when he's in compliance with league policy or whatever, so it could be a few games or it could be forever.

True . Inhaling smoke of any kind into your lungs is perfectly healthy. Fact. PS you might want to stay in your lane
If you drink, you need to stay in your lane as well. Any alcohol consumption is a poison to the liver. However, there can be benefits associated with each. A glass of red wine with dinner once or twice per week can help with cholesterol. Smoking can help with insomnia, depression, anxiety, or sicknesses such as MS or Cancer. I’m not saying you do drink, but if you do, don’t view one thing as okay and the other as not just because of what the federal law says and the stigma that has been attached to marijuana (much of which was propaganda created by our government to associate weed with hippies in the 60s and 70s).

It was the most thrilling live game that I ever attended. Next best was the 1978 Championship game against dook.
piss on dook I hope we play them again this year and beat them just to see that “118-84” bs go away

What constitutes weed abuse? Lol. You could smoke every day and it wouldn't have a single adverse effect on you.
So you think employers just have anti-drug policies in place for shits and giggles? Of course marijuana has adverse effects on you. I've worked with people who were clearly under the influence of pot. That can get people killed around machinery.

don’t forget the politicians in the 20s linking weed to a awful drug all because hispanics coming into the country illegally were smoking it

People can get killed around machinery sober and tons of people do every year now name the deaths from “marijuana overdoses”

I mean, obviously one should not be high at work (though I saw it a lot in the food industry). There are other medicines in which people also should not operate machinery while taking. But if someone gets high on a Saturday or even a Sunday, it won’t affect them come Monday at work or anything like that.

Yep. Go people need to go back and watch his highlights. He was unreal. I figured he would've blown up immediately in the pros.
Monk's problem has always been consistency. He's very streaky. When he gets hot, he can torch someone from anywhere on the floor. When he's cold, he can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn. I remember saying to family members when he was at UK. Monk is a guy who shoot you into a game or out of a game, depending on whether or not he's on.

I'm sure part of his issue is mental. There is no question that he has the physical tools and athleticism to make it in the NBA. He just needs to approach it the way IQ has at Kentucky, which is to get in that gym and perfect his craft- work until it becomes 2nd nature. But the drugs probably helped him with the mental part of it, gave him an edge, and helped him play better. Problem is, that is a double-edged sword and it will come back to hurt you if you do it for very long.
