At what point do we STOP it with...can he recruit the best.

Seriously? Have we not learned that we need to get OLDER and not stuck in the 5* mentality that got us in the mess we are in. Can he recruit the PORTAL?!?!! Can he manage NIL?!?!?! The guy is brilliant and I trust him to figure this out.
no,,,, many here, hate OAD but want the number one class.... they want players to care about UK, but they want OADs.... they want four year guys, but want guys to leave after one year...
we have a lot of fans that are spoiled brats with zero self-awareness

Agreed. But recruit the best is also part of the portal. It also doesn't have to be 5* guys...it is about getting the right pieces.

TBH...he should go grab Perry's teammates who are going D1 from Lyon County. Put them on scholarship at end of bench and develop.

It is a mindset that has to change. We will no longer win recruiting wars class rankings...and will become better because of it. 5stars are a failed strategy that Cal could not break. One and done is a strategy that yields 1 and done post seasons.

Still need talent to win big lol need to get a good staff around him who can recruit. We’re ****ing Kentucky, not BYU. I’m giving him a chance and hope he wins big.

Anybody that has ever coached at any level with success knows that the first ingredient in a successful team is talent. If we get these players from BYU we are going to have a very long season. They cant compete with the athletes in the SEC. He must get the players everyone was screaming for Cal to get.

Yep. No lies detected.

Everybody take note….as with most things it isn’t black and white. You want the best recruits but you also want to be able to keep them around. That was Cal’s biggest failure. What is the point of getting terrible recruits and keeping them around. You might get lucky with a few diamonds in the rough but usually they will flop.

Pope has to recruit the best AND keep some around especially if they need another year.
Surely you have the solution and a good reason for them to stay? What do you say to a young man that has his head set on going after one year..........ready or not...........what magical words can anyone say that will change these kid's minds?

He doesn’t have to have a roster as loaded as Kal’s but at minimum it has to be full of top high level transfers or 4 star or better players. Hes shown zero ability to even get a 4 star player in his career. Most of his players are 2 and 3 stars. Thats mid major as hell.

People keep wanting to point to UConn as the example of not having to be loaded but they had multiple nba players on both last year and this years team. Including a 5 star. Same with Oates at Bama. He hasn’t been rolling out a bunch of 3 star scrubs and making magic. Hes had very good classes both in high school and the portal.

Wish we could have just traded Kal for Musselman straight up instead of being in this situation.
He has shown zero ability to recruit top players because of where he has been......as others have said, "Mormon ruled don't help a lot"............also the NIL money has a lot to do with it..........it appears to me that the Mormons are tight fisted with anyone who isn't a Mormon or sign one of their waivers......

UCONN and Gonzaga typically don't tear it up on the recruiting trail. What did all those #1 classes get us? 10+ losses every year, and no post season wins.

Recruiting is nice, but coaching is more important. Pope has shown that he can get a lot of out of very little. The total opposite of Cal. Plus everyone that has met Pope, seem to love him. Half his team from BYU is following him here. I don't think we will have to worry about recruiting. Especially with all the NIL money pouring in.

Plus, i thought everyone was sick of the revolving door of players, and one and dones? If you go out every year and recruit the top guys, then you are setting yourself up for that scenario again. We need to shoot for guys in that 30-100 range, get them to stay for a few years, and coach them up. That's the key to winning in the current landscape of college basketball.

Let them make their decision, but the University of Kentucky employees should be telling the what they can do if they come back next year, NOT why they should leave.... Its a pretty basic concept.

That’s a fair point, but like I said, that can’t be an excuse. This isn’t a job your make gamble hires with. If Pope hadn’t played here he wouldn’t have been anywhere near Mitch’s list and people wouldn’t be trying to talk themselves into this hire. This is nepotism at its worst. No different than Brad getting coaching jobs because Cal is his dad.

We HAD the best recruiter, but everyone complained about Xs and Os, out-of-bounds, scouting, modern offense, etc (substituting, playing favorites, running players off, getting technical fouls, yelling to much at everyone, sabotaging game plans, not playing the best players, putting players in a position to fail, not being forthcoming about injuries, not caring about winning in the conference, not caring about seeding, making a clear favorite mediocre or at best into an underdog, making talent rich rosters passive or even spiteful, saying fans don’t know anything, putting everything basketball related above the university, throwing players under the bus, saying and doing the same things no matter what’s different or what’s been learned good or bad, losing motivation, preferring the nba, getting out coached by amateurs, never front running, always reverting and never taking responsibility, win or lose etc.)

Now we have, by all accounts, Xs and Os, out-of-bounds, scouting, modern offense, etc.

He hasn't had a single minute to recruit, develop, or win games yet - let's just calm down, let this play out, and throw our full support at him in the process

UCONN has definitely proved you don't need 5 stars to win National Championships. The portal with this NIL pool will help with roster construction. Now to find the right players to supplement the roster going forward after Pope finds players to fit his system and stay 3-4 years.

The reality is, Pope needs to build a contender. Right away. There's no excuse in this NIL/portal era. If he can't, there's a serious question as to IF he can do it going forward.

That's not the reality. That's just your opinion. I think we will be a contender right away, but we don't NEED to be.

If you think we were losing because we had five star players you're delusional.
We need five star players but with a different coach.
Top 25 coached by a different person..
Thats it.
I don't give a damn if they want to go pro after the first year or the second year or whatever the hell.

No I don’t but I’m not paid 9 million a year to have those answers. Other coaches seem to be able to do it. Filipowski was a fringe 1st round pick why didn’t he leave Duke? I know you can’t keep them all but why was Cal’s retention rate so terrible?

If you listened to Pope’s press conference, he mentioned players may be in Lexington from 1-4 years, so he isn’t opposed to guys being able to go early.

However, as others have said, I think the only guys who go will be no-brainers. Anyone who would benefit from returning will probably return and develop
