As a “long suffering UK football fan” (1958), I never imagined…

…I would witness UK fans so enthusiastically and publicly counting down until the start of football season. Is this the “Twilight Zone”?
No. It's the Oregon Trail. A long, long journey to reach the promised land. Some of us have been on that journey for three quarters of a century and we can SEE it, just around the bend! That's the reason for the excitement.

Been 50 years since I was at UK - been waiting and waiting and waiting. The Curci years were fun - just not enough of them. Now, we have the real deal in football. Our day may yet come!

Go Big Blue!

Well said. I agree. I thought after the 1977 10-1 year, UK football had arrived but alas it was a mirage. Now. Finally, I am starting to allow my self a little bit of belief that UK will be a consistent winner from now on. At age 72, this is a good feeing.

I am not sure Bama will be a consistent winner "from now on" but other than that, 74 here and "from now on" is relevant I guess!

I'm also 72 - I'm hoping for a lot more - and it would sure be fun to enjoy football season every year. Atlanta is the current dream - but a Natty would be the ultimate for all of us 70 plus guys!

I hear you. 61 here. My first exposure to UK football was buying a pre-season publication in 1976, reading it cover to cover, listening to all the games on AM radio, watching the replays on the Fran Curci show….good times…I remember when BB season started and I heard Cawood calling BB games and I was like “ what, this guy calls basketball games too.”

Stoops had us on a trajectory to get to Atlanta and beyond until this stupid NIL crap started and the Tennessees and UL’s of the world caught up to us overnight…i still have faith in Stoops’s proven record of developing talent so I think we are good but it will likely slow us down until we get the NIL figured out

I'm 63 and feel like a young pup here...my freshman year at UK was 1977...10-1 in football and a National Title over Duke (before we hated them) in basketball..

During my next 4 years (missed a semester with mono), basketball remained relevant, but football went on a downward spiral.

I love UK football, so let it keep rolling!!!

Began listening around '60 so for a long time 4-6 was a great year. I'm just glad to be around to see it. I remember so many games in which you had to wait for one or two plays to feel good about(maybe a sack, a 20 yard completion or a 15 yard run) but we fans showed up every week hoping for a miracle win.

Yes Doc- I remember Commonwealth rocking before the expansion of the stadium from 52K. UK has always had a loyal and large football fan base. The program not succeeding was not the fan support for sure! It's too bad we had AD's who seemed to be afraid to let the program compete with basketball. Bear proved both could have survived here - had the administration wanted it so. Kentucky football - how great would it have been if they had kept the Bear??? But maybe he would have returned to Alabama anyway? Well, we will have to face stiff recruiting competition from now on - but we are now in the game and the other SEC programs are starting to notice - even the sports writers!

I attended 17 straights games in the late 70's and 80's before I saw UK win a football game against North Texas St. I wrote to Oscar Combs at the Catspause and told him this and he replied in his commentary that I definitely needed some kind of award for dedication...lol.

Uk fans have always been enthusiastic about their football. The product has just been crap the majority of the years before Stoops overall. Uk fans have always loved uk football and finally it has started to love them back.
This. My family had tickets when Commonwealth opened in the 70's and it was mostly filled up with great tailgaiting all the time. Top 25-30 nationally in attendance each year. And set records in the numbers we took to the rare bowl games.

Yes sir Doc! From a long, long, long time ago - lol! Left 55 years ago - but it will always be home to me!

Went to Temple Hill, played Gamaliel in all sports. WKU's Jerry Dunn played his freshman season at Gamaliel.

Jerry lived about 1.5 miles from me when he went to Gamaliel. We were in the same class. I was the basketball manager for Gamaliel for 4 years and I played baseball at Gamaliel. Jerry also played basketball as an 8th grader at Gamaliel. My best friend in high school married a girl from Temple Hill.

So you knew Jerome Taylor? Played golf with him some at T-ville, who was the Temple Hill girl.

Jerome was football coach and later principal. Knew him well. I don't her maiden last name, but her first name is Jo Ann. She became a teacher and my friend was Ag. Teacher and later Principal of a school - I think they live in Mercer county now. They both graduated from Western in early 70's.

I never imagined that KY would go 16-2 over the Missouri, South Carolina and Vanderbilt in the last six (6) seasons. That's pretty amazing, even considering how far down those programs have fallen.
