Anyone else notice?

Another take. We slowed down on offense that late part of the game. Our team is not very good in slow offensive sets. Even with that Bama stopped any pretense of defense.

We never want to be in a close game at the end. Cal's slow down has been a continual disaster. In this game it was fine to do as there was no way by doing so that Bama could catch up. But, otherwise it has cost us over the years.

The officiating was waaaay tighter down the stretch. The discussion here currently is whether that’s the correct way for an official to react to a team getting their asses kicked. From what I’m hearing on the proponent side is it’s the refs duty to tighten it up to avoid fights and possible injuries. To which I say bullshit.

I am fine...You just cant read worth a ****. SHow me where I said, "call tick-tack fouls"---I didn't. Maybe have someone on here read to you what I said?
I totally get your point of view.
As a former high school and travel ball coach, I have seen many games where the strike zone would get much larger or smaller depending on which side of the score you were on.
At times in games that were completely our of hand, the mood seemed to be one of "lets just get this over with" and leave.

"Meaningless foul= Tick tack foul

Keep going, you're giving everyone entertainment here. Calm down bruh
Naaah. Here I will explain to you...

1st half---We have a collison---I call a block vs UK...Cal: "How BORDEN....He as never legal. He jumped into my guys path...Get better...that's ****ing terrible...

2nd hald---6 minutes to go. UK is up 38. Same exact play. I call a block. What you think I am gonna hear from Cal?

Absolutely nothing. Its meaningless. Hence, in that situation, its easier to call a foul on UK. AKA---a "meaningless foul"

Do you need a picture?

So you change the way you call things based on how much a coach complains? This is looking worse for you as you continue, not better.

It’s amazing an actual ref is saying the quiet part out loud. They adjust the way they call the game based on how the game is unfolding.
Of course you do---in this situation. Its a BLOWOUT. There is 6 minutes to play---UK is up 40. Anything I call at this point is meaningless. It has zero bearing on the game. But you HAVE to get something. So in THIS situation, i.e, a 38 point game, its easier to just get this on UK, than it is BAMA. Its simply managing the game...the emotions.

Ask yourself this---Whenever UK is losing like this, and a 50/50 call goes against you---What is your initial reaction?

Yeah, make sense now?

So you get to decide what that threshold is to when you start changing the game? What is it for you? 10, 15, 20, 22?

Yeah, its not a hard concept.

Its called, "game management"---Its a 40 point game. So as officials you say---"Lets keep Bama happy, and UK healthy."---Emotions run high, even in blowuts. Maybe even more so than if the game is close. So its easy to "get" fouls on UK, opposed to Bama. The calls are meaningless---they have zero bearing on the outcome. So you now manage the game, opposed to officiating the game. Keeps emotions in check.

What difference does it make? Winning by 40, opposed to "only" 22? As an official, I'm just wanting the last 10+ minutes to go smooth----keep emotions in check. Manage the game. At this juncture, the game is over; 104-67. Its not like it was a 15 point game or something. It was a 37 point game. The "whistle being fair" is irrelevant.

You get marginal calls vs UK, and leave them alone vs Bama. Why? Because no one is getting mad for UK, Its like, "yeah, shitty call, but----who cares---we are up by 50.

Manage the game.
It’s not an officials job to manage the game. It’s the officials job to call the game down the middle. No more, no less. Officials rate their importance too high. The best officials I don’t notice all game

I gout on a limb here and say you ate paint chips at some point in your life?

But to answer----I mean when its a 38 point game with 7 minutes to go, I think its safe to say to the crew---"Hey guys, lets just manage these final 7 minutes, and get everyone home.

But shit, sometimes when its a 10 point game with 11 minutes to go, ya just say **** it....

JFC, some of you.

Keep on.

Just trying to understand the way you arbitrarily change the way you call the game as opposed to just call it even the entire way.

Its absolutely an officials job to manage the game.

"The best officials I don't notice all game"---Yeah, ummm tell me the last time that happened? One of the most asinine sayings of all time.

So did you have to be trained to change the way you call it? Was it directed by some league/conference/committee or was it on your own accord or did you pick it up as you climbed the ranks from other bad officials?

You’d think an official would be embarrassed to admit he changed the way he officiates the game based on the score. But here it is, happening right in front of our eyes. Pathetic

Shhhhh......don't scare him away. He's confirming what everyone already knows which is, a call on one end is not always a call on the other. "Game management" my ass.

He's getting mad, hence the personal insults. 🤣🤣

I’m just asking clarifying questions so I can understand why all of this discretion is simply better than calling the book the whole time. One way seems complex with lots of ways for teams and fans to get angry and the other way you know seems fair and balanced.

Officials deciding “okay, based on the score of this one now it’s my job to interject and manage this game so no one gets their feelings hurt” is absolutely wild. How about you call it down the middle, lets the players play and the coaches manage their players. Wild thinking by an official thinking they are WAY more important than they are. An official has no business managing the game to try to make sure a team that’s getting their asses kicked don’t get their feelings hurt.

Thats all fine and dandy, until we started using metrics to rank teams. Those metrics don't care about garbage time.

The refs reviewed this and still called it goaltending🤣🤣🤣 Was this one of those meaningless calls?

I don't disagree. But a 22 point win vs #13 Alabama is really no different than a 30 point win. UK cooled off big time late from three: I think 1-8? Gave up a ton of run-outs and dunks as well, late. That too plays a role.

An official admitting they change the way they officiate a game based on the score is appalling. He should be embarrassed, but he’s not.

You are taking the metrics back to the full game though. The claim was calling fouls to manage the game instead of officiate it with a huge lead is ok. The metrics take every single possession into account, so if we are going to use those to rank teams, officials need to actually officiate every possession.

Probably because I don't think the officials are the boogeyman, and I understand the context in which I am speaking. Don't get mad at me because you're to ignorant to understand.

Leave it to some to make 1+1 difficult.

Not at all. I should have known better to try and give an explanation to some you. Most are to biased, and ignorant to understand.

All good. Great win.
If your response to this as an official is anything other than “I call the game down the middle for 40 minutes”, it’s the wrong answer.

I don't care about the metrics, or point spreads---So this is a "loaded" question/statement, so to speak.

I’m not making anything difficult, clown. And don’t call me ignorant.

As an official you have ONE job. Call the game down the middle. You’re the one overcomplicating it.

No its not. Again, another example of simply not understanding ALL THE aspects of controlling a high level , CBB game. I get it, You understand this more than guys who have done this for 20+ years. I forget you were probably in meetings, clinincs, at camps, when we go over this ONE aspect of the game.

But you be you.

Gotcha….

One job? What you think an officials ONLY "job" is to blow their whistle?

Ignorant.
