My mention of Nolan Richardson in a post reminded me of a thread from several years ago so here goes

I recounted the 1972/3 NCAA game between UK and Austin Peay(which I attended) the story revolved around an altercation between Larry Stamper and Percy Howard that occurred late in the game in which Stamper punched Howard at mid-court and knocked him under the scorers table. Jon Scott disputed the story and cited the box score as proof since it contained no mention of the incident. He is correct that the box score doesn't show a record of such(UK won 106 to 100 in OT)

I was there, I saw it happen, my question to the board is, did anyone else attend the game or listen to it and remember this happening? As a side note Cawood called what was going to happen about 30 seconds before it did

I don’t remember that butI do recall Stamper decking Vandy’s Jan Van Breda Koff and walking off the court.

Yes they were ,game in Nashville. In later years I became friends with Charles Fishback, he had some great stories to tell about his playing days there with Fly Williams(they upgraded the chant to "the Fly is open, let's go Peay")

I remember when Austin Peay played at Murray State when they had Fly Williams, everybody in the crowd had fly swatters, pretty cool scene that night.

One of the fraternities at MTSU paraded a toilet around the top of our arena at one game with APSU. Fly was annoying but what a baller! I have vivid memories of Fly Williams antics and foibles especially his sitting on the floor pouting during a NCAA tournament game they were losing.

I have been to games at Austin Peay when they played Western and heard that "the fly is open " lol

I didn’t see it. But I do remember hearing stories about it.


My favorite memory of that time is
“The Fly is open, let’s go Peay”!!

I had heard another story about Larry Stamper being a bad ass. Seems UK lost a home game and back at the dorm later that night someone yelled at the basketball team that they sucked . My friend who was at student at the time said the next thing you know Stamper was busting a door down and looking to kick somebodys ass . My friend said people were doing their best to get out of his way when he was coming down the hallway

Was at an EKU football game when they were playing Austin Peay. A fraternity was chanting, “We want, “More Head”. An old granny sitting in front of me turned to her husband and yelled, why are they talkin’ bout Morehead? They better be worried about Austin Peay. The old man looked at me and shook his head.

I was listening to Cawood's call on my transistor radio, the game had gotten pretty rough. After a scrum under the basket involving Stamper and Howard the teams were headed to the other end of the floor. Cawood said "It is getting pretty rough out there, folks this isn't going to last long" Stamper stopped at mid-court and as Howard went by Stamper knocked him on his butt and he slid under the scorers table. Cawood's comment was " and Stamper decks him"
