Any Chance UK Tries To Buy Out Our Away Opener In 2024 Against Akron?

I saw Akron lose a four overtime game to Indiana last night and look halfway decent doing it. They kept talking about how important it would be for Akron to win this power five game, since they haven’t won one against a power five team since 2018. Doesn’t UK have the right to just pay them off so as have to not open our season opener on the road next year? UK’s schedule next year is beyond brutal and the idea of opening on the road and risking a loss does not seem to be worth it to me. Would appreciate other UK fan thoughts!

We can offer, but they can always refuse. We bought out the Eastern Michigan game in recent years. Would seem like we would have already done it if we were going to do so.

IIRC, in that particular case, EMU actually approached UK to cancel their home game with us in favor of playing us at CWS. I believe they realized they could make more money playing us at CWS than they would playing us at their place.

What is an "away home opener?"

I assume he meant away "season" opener(?)

IU sucks.... don't read too much into it. I didn't realize we actually had an away game with them in 2024. I would assume MB, CWS, etc. scheduled this for recruiting purposes.

I'm not too terribly worried about playing Akron at their place, apart from the fact that it means one less home game for us.

Just asking, have you read the contract? It's my understanding that schedule contracts usually specify a buyout amount.

100% chance we buy it out. We know it. Akron knows it.
Probably written into the contract already of how much.
Only need to make sure we have a replacement.
It's a dance we, and every other P5 school, do every year.

If a buyout option is in the contract we send them a check, boom, game is bought out their feeling in the matter don't matter

From an article: “There is no specific language in the contract pertaining to a potential buyout of the Akron home game”

If anything wouldn’t you all want to keep that game for recruiting purposes since Ohio is one of your strong areas ? Heck even big bad Bama played at South Florida this year. I guess you could try Indiana since they bought out the games with Louisville for 24. & 25.

Yes, unfortunately our home opener next year is at Akron on 8/31/24.
It was a two home and one away game deal with Akron, They come back to Lexington in 2026. I think we had a similar deal coming up with Toledo as well. Not for sure on that one. So if we buy Akron out, we will have to likely buy their return visit out as well. I don't see it happening. They did that to get some recruiting exposure up there. They really want to raid Big 10 territory for players who don't want to play cold weather football anymore, but are still within driving distance for their parents to attend games.

What would have been cool is if they could have made a deal to play the game at the Pro Football HOF. 30 minutes from Akron's campus, but seems like a much bigger deal that playing a game at Akron. We are also scheduled to go to Toledo in 2028.

*if* the game is not bought out I'd bet it has an excellent chance of being on Thurs night before Labor Day Weekend

Of all the teams and areas the program could choose to go play on the road in the OOC...Akron...Jesus Christ if that doesn't sum everything up in a nutshell.

They could go play SMU, Tech, Baylor in Texas in front of Texas talent and push their foot a little further into the door of that recruiting base.

Could go play and start a home and home with a west coast program and get some exposure to those recruiting territories...Cal, Stanford, Arizona, ASU, UCLA

Could firm up some Florida ties play UCF, USF, Miami, FSU...

But nah instead of getting a decent tv slot, gaining some exposure for the program, establishing some more recruiting options with a decent early season match up...let's go play Akron, in an area we've already maxed out in terms of recruiting, and not get any interest from fans or recruits outside of the Lake Erie region.

It would be nice to play a game in Cincinnati again. I think it was maybe 2003 (not sure what year) I think Paw Paw Brooks was here. We played Miami (OH) at then Paul Brown Stadium. Was an awesome atmosphere for a college game. an away game, but felt like it was in Lexington.

I was robbed of a trip to glorious Ypsilanti, Michigan a few years ago for the EMU game (there's a reason it's called YpsVegas!), and I'll be damned if I'm gonna be robbed of a trip to pleasant Akron, Ohio!

1. It's easy to blame Mitch
2. Hopefully the bigger picture is we simply need to get out of 4 non conference game with SEC expansion. We need a 9 game SEC slate and less of this bull crap cupcakes on the schedule. Not many want to travel to Ohio for a season opener. Season tix holders get screwed with this stuff as it is.

We need to get used to a world where more SEC games will look like a 7-5 season is a good year vs. 9-3 with 4 non conference games padding wins. And the lower tier bowl will adjust as well if Big10 and SEC go to less non conference games.

This. We just played that game (sort of...) to an easy win. IU isn't fit to carry the Cats' water.

Before Stoops got here we hardly ever got good players from Ohio. We need to keep a strong presence in Ohio. Game in another area would be great, but don’t under sale our presence in Ohio. I always wondered why our coaches didn’t hit Ohio hard!!

Tickets should be easy & cheap. Vandy-like. What's the problem?
I would say a MUCH bigger chance of looking bad, or even losing. Also a lot of fans that don't have season tickets and can't afford to travel would miss a chance to see them play. A lot of fans don't pay that much attention to where they played the game, win or lose. Does spending all that time and money to travel to see what should be a no contest game sound exciting to the average fan?

Wouldn't mind a game against Cincinnati up in Paul Brown Stadium with a 50/50 ticket split. that would be a good series, But Satterfield probably still has nightmares of us steamrolling his UofL teams, so he may not be up for it.

No, we do not NEED a nine game SEC slate, LOL. Eight is enough of a gauntlet as it is.

EMU asked us to. they needed the money.

the game will be bought out
Akron will get a nice pay check and return to Kroger field in 2026
they will also schedule another good paycheck game and double dip
smaller schools do it all the time

Really we're in year what 11? If we can't beat Akron on the road might as well quit being a UK fan because the rest of the schedule is going to be miserable. .
Imagine being a SEC team and afraid of Akron.
