Amile Jefferson out indefinitely for Duke

That's a lot of experience to lose with one player. We've had tough luck with injuries the last two seasons. Fingers crossed we stay healthy.

last two season?

You mean 3 season.

Noel,
WCS,
Poythress

We lost Ulis for a game, Lee for a game.

so many injuriesssss

Its not even that we have had that many, but man have they been critical players that cost us a title.
Stein is the one guy that would have impacted Napier and that other little shit coming off those ball screens in '14. Poy last year would have changed that defensively.

Yep. Though the Noel loss was big, the absence of WCS and Poy were huge and may have cost UK and Cal two national championships.

Woof, absolutely brutal for us:(

Senior captain, 11 points and 10 rebounds per, shooting nearly 70 percent, best defender on the team, anchored the D. Just about the important guy on the team. Ugh.

And Duke has had a TON of injuries. Hell, just with FOOT injuries we may have missed on two or three titles... That Kyrie team would have been a huge favorite to win, and that Ryan Kelly team was SO good when he was playing. Here is the list of JUST serious foot injuries since the 90s... So that leaves out injuries like the Seth Curry one that kept him from practicing even once his senior year...

Hurley
Brand
Boozer
Paulus
Collins
Zoubek (twice!)
Randolph
Kelly
Kyrie
Jefferson

K is notoriously tight lipped about injuries that have expected times out. General feeling is this is a bad one.

I don't wish injury on anyone, but I sure as hell don't feel bad for a coach or program that has been blessed with so much good karma despite playing the game the way they do. BS flopping and flailing around the court and whining like no other.
Happy Holidays everyone.

Foot injuries confuse me in basketball. I can understand ankles, knees, shins, etc. But other than someone stepping hard on your foot, how do you injure a foot? Is it broke?

Sorry to hear this. Hope the kid recovers. I much prefer seeing Duke get their ass beat at full strength.

Meh, I don't think anyone ever really remembers injuries, unless it's something like Hummel's or Kenyon Martin's when they happen right before the tournament. It doesn't lessen a win for me if the other team is missing a key player, since that is part of the game and we've certainly lost plenty of games because we were missing a key player. Yeah, it sucks for the player, but it happens.

Who is Ryan Kelly? Jefferson is a huge loss. He kind of sets the frame work for what they do. Kelly, Zoubek, Collins, Paulus, Hurley. White boys struggle.

Foot injuries happen in any sport where running is constant.

Jeter will get more time since he now basically has to and I fully expect more small ball lineups of Thornton, Allen, Jones, Ingram and Plumlee/Jeter. Kennard should also see an uptick in playing time as well with the team only being 7 deep rather than 8 deep unless Vrankovic or Obi come out of nowhere. Unless Amile is able to come back and be what he's been this first month, there goes this team's shot at a repeat. I didn't think their chances were wonderful before this bit of news, but if he's done for the season, any chances they had are done with it.

The only possible bright side to this is for next season's Duke team if he's done for this season and is able to successfully apply for a medical redshirt to get a fifth year.

And during their title game. Big blow for Duke.

I don't agree with this. I'd say Tyus Jones and Grayson Allen were, but I will say he did a great job on Frank Kaminsky down the stretch and that Duke doesn't win that game without his presence on the defensive end of the floor (same with Matt Jones on Dekker in that regard).

Well I don't agree. Jefferson was a huge link in that game. Without some of his presence especially on some late boards you might not win that title. I consider him one of the major players in that game in part because no one expected him to matter that much.

Oh I agree with what you're saying about his presence on the defensive end and on the glass, especially since Okafor was predictably having trouble guarding Kaminsky when he was on the court and not on the bench in foul trouble. But I'd say he was the third best player for Duke that night after Jones and Allen. Actually I'd say Allen was the most important player in that game. Without him coming in and scoring those eight points in just over a minute, I don't think they'd have been in a position to win that game in the last few minutes.

Not sure if you were kidding, but Ryan Kelly is a seven foot stretch four who played at Duke... His senior year he was a captain, and was one of the best stretch fours (Ive heard some argue THE best) in Duke history... Averaged 13 pts, 5 boards, 2 assists, and 2 blocks while shooting 42 percent from three and was Dukes best defender, and even got honorable mention for all-ACC despite missing 13 league games. Now plays for the Lakers. Duke was undefeated when he broke his foot, including wins over Louisville, Kentucky, and OSU... Duke actually beat four of the top five teams that year. When he finally returned after missing most of the regular season, despite an incredible first game back (37 points against a really good Miami team ranked #5 in the nation and which had beaten Duke when Kelly was out) he just wasn't the same, and Duke eventually lost to the future title winner, Louisville, in the game Kevin Ware broke his leg. I think that was maybe only one of two loss Duke had the whole year when Kelly was healthy.

Duke had a really good shot at a title that year. But with Kelly missing two months (he had surgery right after the season) and Curry being hurt all year and being totally unable to practice for the season (he also had surgery immediately after the season)... Well, that was a crappy season for injuries:(

4 years in a row that Kentucky now has significant injuries. Sorry, but I'd gladly trade our injury woes for any 350 other teams in that time span. No one, not even Duke (admittedly, they're close to the top with bad injuries) has had the luck Kentucky has.

We've already seen 3 players miss a game or more, Ulis still having effects from his elbow injury, and we're a quarter into the season.

Injuries suck. I would say Kyrie was as bad as it can be. Noel seems like another "max" injury. What other biggies have hit you guys recently?

Btw, are we allowed to claim Giles two ACLs? Because that sucks BALLS.

Kyrie probably gives Duke the "Single worst injury" over the last 5-10 years. But on the other side, he did come back. I'd put Noel up there and also Robbie Hummel. I remember Kyrie coming back thinking "Damn, Duke is gonna steamroll" and it's almost like he made them worse, simply because the team had to adjust with him, and just never did. Duke might have been better off not playing him.

It's worth noting that while a full year with Irving probably gives Duke the title, That "what if" game works against them with Kentucky/Poythress last year, and Purdue/Hummel in 2010.

Georgia Southern will be a cakewalk, but a good test for them will be Saturday with Utah. They have a 7 footer averaging 20 and 10, so will Plumlee #14 be able to check him? Will he play like he did against us?

Last year Duke won by 6 in the tournament with Winslow, Tyus Jones and Cook scoring in double figures. None of those guys are back, so it should be a good test of their other players, especially without Jefferson. Utah plays a lot of guys and they have some experienced players. But if they can't contain Ingram and Allen, they likely lose.

Just looked it up and the only Duke players who played in the game against Utah last year, are Plumlee, M. Jones and Allen (now that Jefferson is out that is). Totaling 6 pts, 0 rebs, 1 asst. So you can pretty much disregard that game for insight into this one.

Foot injury in BBall that requires long recovery is a fracture to the 5th metatarsal, notoriously a bastard to heal, cant walk on it, have to stay off it, lots of times requires a screw to fix it. IF thats the case he is done.

Kendall Marshall is up there too. Would have been an epic 2012 Championship game if he didn't get injured.
