80 would not be able to guard 2 7footers and walker. So I go 84, Once again we must battle, to get top honor in Seattle, Phi Slamma jamma has glory no more cause its Sky Samma Dipper in 84.

1984 team is beloved to me, so I’ll go with those guys.

A great team that should have won it all.
Hall's odd substitution pattern vs Georgetown lost that game. Masters was on a heater. Took him out and it was over. Should have left him in longer. There was other stuff as well but Hall got in his own way that game.

Like 2015 Wisconsin, I couldn’t watch that game again if you paid me. Two painful losses, we should already have #9 and #10.

84’ loss to Georgetown and 15’ loss to Wisconsin are both 2 of the most painful losses I remember.
Georgetown was scary good but we were better. In the second half, we played scared. Part of it was Georgetown’s defense. Part of it was just the moment.
Wisconsin was an odd matchup that we simply weren’t prepared for. Not to pile on , but even with average coaching, we win.

The 84 team was leaking oil. Two-point wins over Alabama and Auburn to win the SECT, then a blowout win over BYU in the first round. Things looked great.

But then we played terrible against Louisville, a team we led by 29 and beat 65-44 four months earlier. We trailed by four at halftime and were fortunate to pull ahead at the end because Gordon and Wagner did whatever they wanted offensively.

We were REALLY fortunate to beat Illinois. We hung on thanks to a friendly whistle.

The first part of the Georgetown game we looked incredible, leading by 12 and getting Ewing in foul trouble.

Then we simply lost to a better team. Not a better starting five, but a better team. And we didn't have our home court and a friendly whistle to save us.

I don’t have any trouble saying GTown was better. They had an all-time great 4 year run with Ewing.

But when you go 3 for 33, that’s an us problem, not a them problem. It’s a different result if we even go 10 for 33. Should have been able to pull that off easily, even against that vaunted D.

I saw some of the 83 team. But really, 84 was my first full rabid season of being a UK fan. So that team is special to me. But even if not a special team to me, I don't see how anyone could pick the 80 team. I mean, yeah Bowie was healthy and had Macy, but that's still not enough.

I don't think they were better. I'll give you that maybe it was close. They had the better player, but we were much better after Ewing.
Recall we had the lead at half-time, and didn't have a great 1st half. But 3 for 33 is historically bad, it is statistically significantly bad.

Don’t have to give me anything. I was replying to another poster who said Gtown was better.

It’s a fair argument, imo, considering they beat us by 13 and won the championship. But we clearly shot ourselves in the foot, whether Gtown was actually better or not.

Dwight Anderson transferred after the first semester so he’s a non-factor. But what a player he was. I don’t think John Wall was as fast as The Blur was.

He was not as fast as Dwight was. I've not seen anyone that was yet.
Dayton Ohio man I can remember the hoopla surrounding Dwights commitment when he got here Joe hall put the reins on him and he transferred to southern cal he also put the reins on dirk minniefield and dirks hs coach jock sutherland got so damn mad he changed schools and chose louisville Joe hall was old school in a game starting to revolve into the modern game at the time man he ruined alot of big time talent during his tenure

That G-Town loss was gut wrenching. We couldn't find the basket with a search warrant. I'm with you, I never wanna watch either of those games again!!

didn’t joe b go away from playing turpin and bowie together in the second half vs gtown? that’s what i remember most from that game

Maybe but Gtowns defense and intimidation took us out of that game. They just turned it up and took us out of any kind of offensive rhythm. It wasnt just that we went cold shooting, its that we went cold shooting because every shot was hurried or under duress and we kind of panicked.

The 1984 season, me and my father followed the team to as many games as we could go to, both on the road and at Rupp. We had the UK season tix, Vanderbilt, and TN tickets for the Kentucky games. Dad bought most of all the games, and every single one at Rupp as well as the game against Purdue in Louisville, my brother Bob got us those tickets. Bob is UK alum.

So my memory was vivid and numerous with that team. It was heartbreaking in that final four game in Seattle we couldn't see them play in that nightmare game.
always thought it was because me and dad weren't there to see them and support them. we just couldn't make it there to that game. And we all couldn't believe what happened.

Beautiful memories ! It was one of the greatest teams on my short list of greatest teams, and certainly MOST FAVORITE of all time, to have personally followed as a 15 year old boy that was there for nearly the entire season..

Thankful to be here to see and witness a new era begin !

Go Big Blue !
