One of the biggest problems with BV is his tendency to run backwards for a second, and by the time he looks downfield, he has defenders closing in, and also makes slow reads/doesn't follow progression. Calzada, while not the hottest QB, makes quicker reads. All we need is better protection up front, otherwise he better enjoy running
he is very good at extended the play, and also ran for 540 yards and 5 TDs last year. Threw for 3,791 yards, 65% completion rate, 35 TDs and only 9 INTs. He has proved he can play at the top level, beating #1 Bama while at A&M.
I'm not sure if this is great, good, or meh. The guy has played in JUCO last two years and has a great passing efficiency. He threw for 3744 35/9 in JUCO (2024), and 2180 17/9 at TAMU (2022), so he can play. He rushed for 320 and 5TDs so he can scamper.
He had a bad shoulder injury and had surgery a couple seasons ago. It would appear that has healed well, but haven't seen his deep ball, so not sure if that's an issue or not.

I’m not big on BV but in all fairness a lot of Hamdan’s routes took an awfully long time to develop which didn’t help much, especially with our pass blocking. Never could figure out why we didn’t adjust to help BV a little more, total system failure imo.
^1000% correct. I complained all year long that we seemingly never ran any short/quick routes to let BV get a few gimme completions. We constantly tried to push the ball down the field and outside the hash marks even when it was very apparent we didn't have a good pass blocking OL. I'd watch games and want to pull my hair out with the inexplicable reluctance to hit quick passes, use the flats and middle of the field, etc. Never understood what Hamdan was doing the entire season with his playcalling.

Positives include age, experience and leadership ability, good touch on his passes, throws the out, slants and deep well, scrambles well and keeps eyes downfield for late throws, good feet on his set ups, some running ability and this QB should be playing behind our best pass protecting line we have had in many years. Lot of good stuff.
Watched these yesterday and he's pretty much on target with every throw

I'm excited to have him. I imagine they didn't spend a ton of NIL on him, so that's a positive for me. Our NIL money last year was spent in a lot of terrible places and our productivity of those guys was not good as a collective. We had way too many holes to fill to drop a couple million on a QB. I think for the price that I believe we paid, it's a good pick up.
BTW, it's crazy that we are in a time where the value from an NIL perspective plays such a crucial role.

He’s kind of a wild card for me. Everyone remembers that Alabama game, but he wasn’t actually that good the rest of that season at A&M, completing about 56% of his passes and throwing 9 interceptions. For all the talk in this forum about how much of a scrambler he can be, he also finished that season with negative rushing yards.
Granted, he’s looked a lot better at Incarnate Word, but it’s pretty difficult to tell how much of that is legitimate improvement in his game and how much is the reduced level of competition. There’s a chance he’s solid, but I’m not convinced yet that he’s going to light it up returning to the SEC.

about half of those passes are on the second and third read...... interesting.... he throws a heck of a pretty pass tho... anyone notice the action on the ball?.... Not one wobble.
Agee. Also, the highlights above show most of those plays he had more time to throw than he will at UK (unless that problem gets fixed). Plus, most of the receivers were open.
I think they really wanted a QB with a lot of experience and this guy certainly has that. VB had good credentials but lacked much experience, that probably contributed to the issues he had.
Plus a lack of a running game and a competent HC and OC.
Possibly, next year's schedule is tougher (as long as other teams hold steady) than this year's.

We actually ran the ball pretty damn well. I do not know YOUR standards, but stacking the box, knowing we didn't have a QB who could beat you, we did really well.
Wilcox - 92 rushes / 590 yards (6.4 per) 2 TDs
Sumo-Karngbaye - 129 rushes / 586 yards (4.5 per) 5 TDs
Patterson - 20 rushes / 111 yards (5.6 per)
Trayanum - 19 rushes / 101 yards (5.3 per)

And just who exactly did we beat out to get Calzada? I've looked and I've looked. Yet I can't find one single thing showing anyone besides us ever offered this guy. If he was just half as good as the sunshine pumpers are trying to convince us all that he is, you would think at least some mid or low level SEC, Big 10, Big 12 or ACC program would have shown some interest in him. But nope. Just us.
We've so far landed 2 guys in this year's portal class that are legit SEC level football players. The others are varying degrees of disappointment, with some being completely bewildering. We're headed straight for 3-9 next season.

Incarnate Word is not a JUCO, it's an FCS school that made the FCS playoffs this year.
The run game was ok BUT not many TD’s and struggled in short yardage.
With all of this talk about Calzada, it makes me wonder what happened to Boley. Did I miss something? Would it not be better to groom this guy for the future? Our schedule next year is tough, and we need to get this guy some reps for the next few seasons. We have gone to the portal 3 times for QB's the last 3 years and I don't think we have done that good with it. We need to bring in good young talent and build on them.
Truth is no one knows how good he will or won't be here. Wild card that had to play out. Stoops history with getting QBs says he won't do well. Hopefully he can exceed that expectation. We will see for sure next fall.

Warrior, here is my take on the Boley situation.
All UofL needed was a a week of prep and a single game of tape (Texas) to put together disguised coverages that worked perfectly to create 3 picks before Cutter went out with the injury.
Similar to his first pass during the 4th quarter of the Florida game, he's locking onto receivers, telegraphing reads and throwing into double coverage too often.
I hope that he improves on those things over time and ends up having a great career. The trouble is, making reads quickly and avoiding locking onto your target well before releasing the ball seems to be the undoing of many QBs at this level.
This addition does little to increase my low confidence. SEC is a very different animal than FCS.
Yes, I know he struggled there, but I believe a lot of it had to do with picking a target before the play started due to knowing he was not going to have enough time to go through progressions. Perhaps with more experience he could learn to manage the position enough to create a little more time (step up in the pocket, scramble more etc...) However, my point was that we need to get someone young and good who will have more years to play in Stoops system rather than a new QB every year through the portal. Next year will be rough again as the schedule is hard. I am not sure a new QB from the portal will be ready.
I agree with you and that's a great point. Year after year it's become transfer portal roulette at the QB position.
I'm being sincere when I say it feels like we haven't developed a QB since Mike Hartline.
Maybe that was because he just landed in the portal late Monday, visited UK Tuesday, and then signed today, which mean they probably agreed yesterday. Say there wasn't a whole lot of time for anyone to offer. I do not know how simply stating UK signed a QB who put up really strong numbers is sunshine pumping ??? To me, it was just stating facts ?
