You know what I miss?

I was thinking about this very thing today and looked at the channels and found a couple of A10games and a Big East game, all between teams who aren't going to the postseason unless they win their conference tournament. It's a testament to how far college basketball has fallen. For most of the nation college basketball has devolved into a 4 week sport that starts in March.

When SDSU went to championship game, the sports reporter in San Diego said, SDSU goi g to the grand finale...

I sure miss a big college basketball game a couple of hours before the Super Bowl instead of all this talking. One I remember was Kentucky vs. Houston when they had Hakeem.
I most certainly do. Was a great game. I think their team nick name was Phi Slama Jama

Our game was in 1984 on Super Bowl Sunday. In Rupp.

It was a great time. They didn’t have Drexler anymore but they were still damn good. Olajuwon fouled out.

He did a lot of complaining about the officials after the game. Which was out of character for him

Guy Lewis just said something like “they had twice as many 7 footers as we did” 😆

Both teams ended up in the FF.

If I recall the Rupp crowd gave Robinson a long standing ovation as he walked off. 50 points? Is that right?
I don’t remember that game being on Super Bowl Sunday. But it might have been?

UK fans did give DR an ovation.

Just going on memory I think he had a triple double.

Robinson, 45 points, 17 of 22, 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots and yes, standing ovation from the Rupp crowd
I think it speaks volumes how classy people were. Standing ovation to appreciate the game regardless of it being an opposing team. I tend to think it would still happen today. RR would implode on Pope but at the moment I think it would happen.

That was the “Sam Bam” game.
Louisville was the Sam Bam game. Same season.

The SAM BAM game was the UofL game from Nov. 1983, back in the days when this game was a REALLY, REALLY BIG DEAL.

We had a tip in win against a top 10 Oklahoma team in the 80s that MIGHT have been in a similar time slot - I think Ced Jenkins got the win for UK - OR Richard Madison

Man, I wish we could get another Bowie!
Bowie was AD 30 years ahead of him. Maybe even better had he not gotten hurt? He was tremendous as a freshman. That play we ran every game with the opening tip was unstoppable. Tip it to Minnefield, circle around for a lob dunk. Every game. Everyone knew it was coming including the other team. They couldn't stop it. One coach said, "why don't we just give them 2 points and then we get it out of bounds?"

I have that Sports Illustrated with Sam and Mel blocking Hakeem's shot. Got that one and it is right there with the Christie Brinkley issue.

I remember Houston bending over and clutching their drawers that game - UK ran them to death I think

Great memory - i also miss the mid/late season conference schedule break against a marquee team

There were several over the decades

Conference schedule may make that impossible now

How many teams are in the SEC now, 16? We should just play each team once. That's 15 games. Then we could have 3 games against basketball schools.

Was that the Eric Manuel game? I remember playing them when they had Wayman Tisdale and we beat them at Rupp.
