Do you think wvu will give huggy bear another shot like they did with their football hire .

I’m happy with all their choices this far. The whole things with Indiana coaches has been weird for a long time. I don’t get it. The AD just doesn’t seem to care or they can’t get anyone with past success to bite.

He's not an exciting hire but as others have pointed out, many of the big named teams recent hires weren't either.

If the NIL is true he may do well. Did the former coach not get the NIL war chest too?

I know (according to this board) Cal didn't get the level of funds Pope did this season due to Cal alienating the boosters. Didn't know if Woodson did the same. And of course money doesn't guarantee success.

H
Better resume than Pope. Turned around Drake immediately. Turned around a garbage WVU team immediately. Lost his best player and still should've made the tournament. Good recruiter. With IUs NIL he should do fine.

Not sure what you were expecting. No one ever believed IU was landing Stevens. DeVries is probably on par with an Otzelberger or Drew. You hired Pope. UL hired Kelsey. Duke has Sheyer. UNC has Davis who will likely be fired next year.
He’s on par with Drew? Ok lol. You know he has a national championship right?

Inside the hall people don’t seem to thrilled.

So as an IU fan, what is your take on the hire?
Are you happy with it, was he on your radar? who had you wanted?
Outside of some Rival Ribbing here and there, I'll reserve judgement as I'm just not familiar with the guy.
I have to imagine Dusty May being at Michigan has a sting of what might have been.

It’s a solid hire. In general, hires by top 10ish programs historically aren’t big splash hires anymore. Mostly gone are the days of major successful coaches changing jobs to jump to a top 10 job. The last 1 was probably Cal. Take a look at this list of current coaches since Cal to UK at top 10ish jobs:

UK - Pope - no tournament wins
UNC - Hubert - no head coaching experience
Duke - Scheyer - no head coaching experience
UCLA - Cronin - 1 Sweet 16
UL - Kelsey - no tournament wins
Villanova - Neptune - no tournament bids
UConn - Hurley - 1st round tourney win
Arizona - Lloyd - no head coaching experience

The days of Roy going from Kansas to UNC, Self going from IL to Kansas, etc might be a thing of the past.
It's a very good hire. As good of a hire as any top 10 program could probably do in today's environment. It's just so hard to pull a top 10-15 coach away. They all already have good jobs. DeVries might be one of them soon though. I'm good with it. He'll have a boatload of NIL and he's a good recruiter. For comparison...

To quote YOU on TheHoosier.com, “he’s another Archie I believe.”

You had it right on Indiana’s board but thanks for coming here to spread BS.

The guy never made the tournament as the regular season champion, even in a minor league like the MVC. Only his son’s talent propped him up in his one year in a major conference and after Tucker was hurt the team pretty much collapsed. You were wrong about one thing: Archie had actually won a few NCAA tourney games. This guy has not. And his lofty win percentage? Mostly against Quad 3-4 talent.

And he’s not Mark Pope for a few reasons: Pope had played for a national champion at Kentucky so he knows the culture and what it takes to succeed here. And he had made the NCAA tournament as an at-large from a power conference, not by winning an automatic bid from a minor league tournament. Also, Pope ran an innovative offense perfect for today’s game, proven in a major conference. Devries’ offense, as measured by KenPom, is roughly at the same level as Woodson’s.

I think you were right on TheHoosier. Those of us who have enjoyed seeing Indiana only advance passed the Sweet 16 once in 32 (and counting) years and miss nine of the last 15 NCAA tournaments and only make it twice in the last nine years (and counting) are relieved by this hire.
I did a lot more research. I was wrong. He is not Archie. Doesn't mean he'll win big here but Archie was a bad comparison.

Starting to be some tampering commentary on X. Don’t know if it is just pissed off WVU fans or it is at all credible but specifics mentioned both being in the Bahamas tournament and his son getting hurt shortly thereafter. Doubt anything comes of it but some are putting it out there.

First the NCAA screws them out of a tournament birth then they lose their coach to IU? Let me guess what is next....

On par with Otzelberger and Drew, huh? 🤔

Your fanbase is garbage and I’ve enjoyed the past 30 years seeing you slog into misery.

This guy is a fine coach but he’s not good enough to save your embarrassment of a program.

Was thinking this.

There was a time you'd leave pretty much any job to go to Kentucky or Indiana.

Last week, they were talking about Beard and Pearl as candidate for Indiana. You would think/assume they had some communication through back channels and knew those guys weren't coming before settling on Devries.

But why wouldn’t they get the current Drake coach instead? Seems he has a better resume.

IU made a big mistake getting rid of Kelvin Sampson
Crazy to think what IU and Tennessee might be like today if their coaches hadn't gotten fired for what seems like laughable offenses today. Sure, Tennessee has done alright, but they could've done even better. And IU has barely kept it's chin above mediocre. Cookouts and phone calls?? Oh my!!

IU would never hire Pearl or Beard.

If there was contact it was from the Pearl or Beard camp trying to get hired. Very doubtful Pearl had any interest

Beard probably does. But he will not be hired by a school like Indiana.

The current coach had a ton of success in DII, no doubt.

Devries took over a Drake program that had been to the NCAA Tournament once since 1971 and went 9-22, 7-24, 7-24 and 17-17 in the 4 years prior to his arrival. He then went 24-10 in his first year and went to the NCAA Tournament 3 out of his 5 years at Drake. He took over a WVU team that went 9-23 last year (albeit under an interim coach) and turned them around to go 19-13 and should have made the NCAA Tournament.

He’s got a pretty solid resume himself.

Obviously, Indiana and Kentucky do not like each other. But I honestly feel bad for them because we understand tradition and culture. It sucks to lose it and it's easy to do.

One Final Four apperance in 33 years, one national title in 44 years? Seeing Nebraska suck in football is the same way.

Obviously I don't want them to ever win again but I'm also terrified of Kentucky becoming Indiana.

WVU fans don’t seem to be heartbroken over it, most see him as a good coach but not rabid mad about him leaving and seems to be a general idea that he is pretty easily replaceable. Many want Huggins to step in for a bridge period or to look at the current Drake dude. Just a glance, so I could be wrong and don’t care enough to dig into it any deeper. A few mentioned he will be fired by IU in 3-4 years by not meeting expectations of the fan base.

Very late to the thread but I'm seeing this deal was done before the season was over and his son was "held back" so he would be good to play at IU next year. Anything goes now. Today's NCAA is certainly the wild west of basketball.

Good spin, but IU should have went all in on Todd Golden.

The fact that you didn't even attempt that hire shows how far you've fallen as a program.

Well, DeVries it is.

A safe and secure bet. There might actually could finally be some respect and peace between us with someone decent like that as a coach at IU. How odd for me to say that.

Either he will do well and bring Indiana their level of excellence that they want, or in 2030, we'll be talking about who the next coach is, and why Indiana didn't wait to go after Todd Golden THIS YEAR, in 2025, and gone all in, we might never know why not. The decision was made and made quickly.

The fact Indiana made the move so quickly, makes me think that there was less interest in anyone really becoming a clear cut better hire, even if they delayed the hiring until after the tournament this year. So they did the safe thing and safe bet, and honestly, I think he will be alright. Get his son another year of eligibility and play for him, be on the Indiana team next year, yes. There ya go. Kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. It's logical and makes sense.

But I don't know that if you put a lot of money with anyone that it wouldn't help but to make you better, and to have solid NIL support and money behind that, Indiana should be a major player, you would think. His hire moves no needle. His style of basketball he brings is nothing ..... flashy. It doesn't have to be, though.

All I'll say is : If Devries can come in and turn things around at Indiana, then Mark Pope will be killing it here.

Which is just one reason why we're still playing and the Hoosiers are not.

Go Big Blue !

IU made a bad decision. Devries is an alright hire. If they would have waited Ole Miss coach Beard would have been a homerun hire for them.
He can't pass a background check and rumor is that people very connected to Indiana University who worked with Beard back in the day don't exactly have great things to say about the extras he brings to a program (like Gillespie for you all).

Doubt they even looked at him. Indiana got burned in the Sampson thing and the willingness to go grab a guy with sexual harassment claims out there against him and his program wasn't going to fly.

As explained up above, you all landed on Pope. Louisville landed on Kelsey. UNC has Davis. Nobody is getting the big fish to leave their ponds anymore and are having to take bigger risks on guys who are more of an unknown. Were you all down because you had to "settle" on Pope? You can provide all sorts of stats on why his mid major and BYU careers and his former time as a player on a great team make him a just fine hire but at this time last year he wasn't on any of your radars. That is just the way it is now.

He's exceeded expectations everywhere he's been. No I'm not saying he's a HOF coach. Might not work. Might be elite. We will see. But his resume screams very good coach. And not a weirdo like Crean or Archie or a lazy deadbeat like Woodson.

Drake wins POST DeVries and Son: 30-3.

IU laughably hired the wrong ex-Drake coach. Dont worry, you will get a front row seat to what could have been when Iowa hires McCollum.

IU going all in. This would be the most NIL for any college basketball team. They will have the money to get players.

With the compensation and nil package they should've been able to do way better. Hiring him so fast tells you how down that job is in prestige. They had to het some quick, emphatic no's to move this far down this fast.

Well, seems your program was able to keep its supreme “morals” intact. Too bad you’re going to continue losing games but at least you will be able to say, “Well at least we hired someone that looks good in a sweater vest and has a clean record.” Just so you know, I am a diehard Kentucky fan, but much of my family live in Indiana and are starved for that program to be good. I actually wouldn’t have minded IU returning to some sort of relevance again but, nope, Indiana is always going to Indiana. I hate it for my family members but it is what it is.

If your fanbase was anything half as good as you all talk to be, you’d have been making it very clear you weren’t looking to hire a bishop…you are looking to hire the best basketball coach. The defense of hiring mediocre coaches without any attempt to hire the guys that can bring your program back is on the IU fans. Truly deserving of the “IUsed2be” moniker.
