Would you really want to win the 'ship in the manner that UNC* did?

Hypothetical scenario: UK (fresh off of a well-documented 20-year cheating run) just won the 2017 championship, mostly do to a favorable whistle in every. focking. tourney. game. If it weren't for poor officiating, we could've/should've lost in the second round, the elite 8, and the national championship. The entire country is pissed about the officiating in our championship game. From Lebron (Twitter) to Fox sports to Yahoo, everyone is complaining about it. A large chunk of opposing fan bases are questioning whether or not college basketball has turned into WWE wrestling.

Would you really even want to win that way? Serious question.

Repeat after me: Despite their cheating, nothing is going to happen to UNC. Nothing. NO - THING WHATSOEVER. So, in a couple years, the media won't be talking about it (hell, they're not talking about it now) and all that will matter is they now have 6 titles.

UNC has 6 titles...what was your question again?

I remember back when a few things were starting to come out about this, showing the scope of the whole thing, and there was not ONE mention of the revelations on any of the ESPN shows. Not a single peep. The only person saying anything about it was Bob Ley on Outside the Lines.

I'm sure UNC fans all feel horrible that they won. If it's questionable officiating that gives UK a title I wouldn't care. Only losers whine. I don't think you will find any UNC fans whining that they got the calls.

If UK is ever exposed to have cheated for 20+ years committing massive academic fraud among other major violations, then shamelessly maneuvered to escape punishment, I would renounce them and be ashamed to call myself a fan.

I would enjoy a championship even if the championship was played against the Perkins School for the Blind. You can say what you want but it feels good to win. The UNC fans I know that admit the cheating scandal happened are still floating on cloud 9 today and gloating about the win on social media.

I'm not going to cast any stones at UNC. Here's why ...

In 1952 we were hit with what was then the DEATH PENALTY for infractions that had taken place during the prior four years. They let us keep our championship banners of 1948, 1949 and 1951.

In 1978 we won the championship while our team was still on probation (1976 major infraction).

That's four titles. Who wants to cast the first stone?

Yes. In 10 years no one will care.

And the mantra is, if you don't get penalized, it didn't happen.

Even worse than the officiating is the arrogant attitude toward the investigation over decades of cheating. How do the folks at the core of that sleep at night? Money only goes so far

At this point, I say forget making kids go to their classes. That is time that could be spent studying film or practicing free throws. Also, whenever we find ourselves in a recruiting battle with another school, like with Knox and Bamba, offer to support the kid's family while they are playing at Kentucky.
Of course we will probably be caught in one way or another some time down the road - but if we win a title it would definitely be worth it. The investigation will take way too long to have significant real impact on the program and the worst we would probably see is a 10 game suspension for Cal when we play the School of the Blind and the Bad News Bears at the start of the season.

If you're asking whether I think I would feel ashamed in winning a title that way - ask yourself if you really feel like you get under a UNC fan's skin when you tell them that their last three titles are illegitimate (hint: you don't). They could care less. It might give us some satisfaction to challenge their titles, but we will never walk away from that argument feeling like we've accomplished anything.

Sort of like robbing a bank....feels good to have all that money in your hands....

All of the controversy will blow over in a few days or weeks and UNC will have their 6 banners hanging from the Dean Dome. That is the system. They have their friends at ESPN and CBS to handle the PR campaign.

No, UNC winning the title leaves a bad taste in my mouth for college basketball. I find myself asking if it's even worth following though I'm sure I'll feel different come late September.

I'm not sure how to answer this. I clearly see their title as tainted however I'd still like to have it. So I guess, yes I'd like to win it the way UNC did but I really wouldn't celebrate it as I did our 2012 title.

HUGE difference is we received penalties. Not a thing has happened to UNCheat. And their misdeeds are obviously worse. It's the easily the biggest academic scandal in history.

And here's another minor difference. Referring to the 1976 infraction, the NCAA said
''While breakdowns occurred in the institution's control over the program, the university's president acted forcefully to uncover all relevant information in the case and to set a proper direction for the future of Kentucky's athletic programs,'' the N.C.A.A. said, referring to Dr. Roselle."

Contrast that to 18 million dollars to cover up their mess.

John Skipper wants to make sure it stays that way, being a North Carolina alumni has it's advantages. It's a shame every where you look there is someone who wants to help that corrupt school.

If UK was pulling shit like this it would be a slap in the face to all of BBN. We would not put up with this. It would suck so bad to have to distance myself but if the University was paying legal fees out the ass to keep from being punished I would be embarrassed to wear UK clothing public.

What is really disgusting is that had this occurred at UK the death penalty would have been swiftly handed down and they would have been eviscerated relentlessly in the media. I tell people about the UNC scandal and I feel like a goddamn conspiracy theorist because 80% of basketball fans have never even heard about it. It's the biggest scandal in the history of college athletics and it has been more or less swept under the rug.

The title UNC won last night has nothing to do with the academic scandal. None of these players (as far as we know) had anything to do with that. The championship run this year is tainted in my eyes, and others, for the consistent favorable whistle your team received throughout the tournament. That fact was magnified by the NCAA and media turning a blind eye to the blatant and irrefutable academic scandal that has gone on at that "university" for over 20 years and covering the tenures of 4 different coaches, possibly 5. That is what is so disheartening to most college basketball fans outside of the tarhole state.

So, to your question. I'll take a championship everyday of the week and twice on Sunday if the only controversy was over getting a favorable whistle. No doubt about that. But if i had to add to that an academic scandal that has never been seen before in college sports, then NO, I'll pass.

Of course you would take the title. It would be foolish not to. By the end of the week the only ones who will still be whining about a "favorable whistle" will be UK and Duke fans. Everyone else would have moved on.

It's because you're a troll with fewer than 20 posts.

Funny you should mention the point shaving from the 1950s. That was carried out by players without the school's knowledge, yet the school (UK) still got the death penalty. UNC's 20-year program of cheating was created and operated by the school (UNC), so at least we can agree that the death penalty is appropriate, right?
