I see our second opponent USCe has named Connor Mitch their starting QB. For those of you that have been to any practices would Barker be their starting QB? If you remember Barker chose us over USCe.

Yep, Mitch was in the same class and Barker was higher rated. But in the long run I think it benefits Barker by coming to UK. The offense will better prepare him for the NFL, USCjr. always has pretty solid QB's (Shaw, Thompson, Garcia) that never translate to the NFL because of their style of play.

Probably so. But by him coming to UK, he stays away from USC. Sometimes that needs to happen with recruits in order to help UK

I doubt if anyone has seen enough of Barker or Mitch to unequivocally answer that question. I think all we can say for sure is that at USCjr Barker would not be facing a returning starter and would almost certainly be "in the mix".

Peace

^Agreed. And I might add that Spurrier is about as hard on QB's as can be. We don't know how he'd have done at USC.

Still doesn't change the fact that currently Barker is heading for 2 yrs of starting as an upperclassman........with the best supporting cast in UK's history.......with one of the hottest coaching staffs in the country pulling the strings.........in and SEC-East division that likely is going to go through some changes in the next several yrs. The future is bright......very bright indeed....for Barker.

Spurrier seemed to be settling for Mitch. Stoops talked up Barker in a way that suggested Stoops cannot wait to see Barker on the field.

Too much is unknown about either to say who would start. Neither has thrown a pass in an SEC game, neither has had to check out of a play at the LOS in a game, ratings are for fans, Jeff Driskel was a top qb prospect when he came out, he had all the tools, big arm, fast, tall, athletic, looked good in practice, but he couldn't read a defense to save his life in a game. As much as I disliked UGA's qb play last year, he had a 154 qb rating, threw 21TDs to 4 ints, he was a low 3* recruit, weak arm, slow, not very fast or elusive, but how can it be said he was awful? Playing qb is more about what's going on above the shoulders than below the shoulders. Peyton Manning is regarded as a great qb, he is slow, looks like he has nervous feet, throws a wobbly ball, but he is very smart. What this all means is you don't know what you have at QB until he has played a little, strongest arm in the world can't afford to throw into double coverage very often.

Think of it this way, Patrick would absolutely start for USCe, and by all accounts, Drew wasn't too far behind Patrick.

I fail to see the significance of the question presented. He's not at USCe. He is almost certainly your future QB at UK. Let me borrow from a very self-important UK alum and figure in KY intercollegiate football by saying, "Drew Barker is on a collision course with the starting QB job at UK, the only variable is time."

Being a Kentucky quarterback benefits Barker in a number of ways. Barker is a Kentuckian, and UK is where he wants to play. Kentucky has a young coaching staff, South Carolina has an aging staff with an ancient, egotistical head coach. Shannon Dawson is a quarterback builder, Spurrier bullies his quarterbacks and has destroyed a few. Kentucky's football program and South Carolina's program are headed fast in different directions. In 2017, Barker will inherit the starting quarterback job in a junior and senior dominated program on the rapid upswing. At South Carolina, he would have been a fall guy and possibly a sacrificial lamb.

Exactly; and Spurrier quarterbacks rarely if ever play on Sundays. Also, I am not sure why UK fans keep bringing this issue up (this question came up on other threads as well). What's the point, that Barker would have been better off NOT going to Kentucky?

The thing is, Barker is all but a lock to be the UK starter in 2017 and 2018. If he goes to South Carolina, he has a better chance to start this year, but it wouldn't be a guarantee. And he had been there, and lost out of Mitch, or Nunez next year, he would not start until 2018, unless one of the other guys faltered.

Drew will get his time...after Pat...

Pat is going to put up numbers this year folks...

nothing wrong with how things are shaking out...by the time DB takes the reigns he will be a veteran surrounded by elite talent, and have an SEC caliber D the likes of which haven't been seen around here...

throwing young kids to the wolves in the SEC is program suicide, and not good for the player either...

I think he will be the starting quarterback at Ky about 1/2 way through the season

Yes, and then he'd be benched for throwing an INT on a play Spurrier called 40 times in a row and the defense knew it was coming. Then he'd make his Beavis face.

I really think Barker is in a perfect position at UK to learn, weight train, and step right in without missing a beat when Towles leaves....He's in a great spot.
