What a loser. Injuries like this happen to coaches, reporters, players, etc. every year on football sidelines. He had to know the risk after doing this work for over 3 decades. The costs should be covered by his health care insurance or workers compensation as he was on the job at the time of injury. Instead his attorney must be claiming some sort of negligence to go for extra and bigger bucks.

Workers Compensation would have paid his medical, time off wages and a disability settlement from his surgery that includes lifetime medical on his knee.

Don’t these guys request sideline passes and he’s got 30 plus years of being on sidelines. Knew the risk. Part of being a sideline reporter. Nobody intentionally or unintentionally tried to hurt him. There are such things as accidents.

To say the school didn't ensure he was in a safe space is ridiculous and really has no merit. At 63 years old and supposedly doing sports for a living, you'd think he would know the ins and outs of standing on the sideline of a football game. Sucks he had the damage to his knee but seems there are insured safety nets to soften the blow.

I don't understand.

If you can detail exactly HOW crowded the sideline was... Then why the **** would you film from there? You think you're special?

Why do people go in and shoot kids in schools when if they would just do the same thing at a personal injury law firm I personally would hail them as a hero? I hope his lawyer ends up at the bottom of a pit being told to put the lotion in the basket.

I was in yearbook in high school. Regularly carried over $2500 in camera gear. Sometimes upwards of $10k depending on the setup.

On the sideline next to the players, next to coaches, next to waterboys, next to trainers, and at endzones. You take care to make sure you and your gear get home in one piece. That means keeping your head on a swivel.

Well, this will only hurt other sports reporters who aren't pussies. They'll restrict access to the field now.

If you're on the sidelines at football games, there's a good chance you might get ran over.
Yep. All of the stupid litigation in the world causes everything to be bland and for things to be no longer available or available the way it was. These things happen all of the time. It's embarrassing to act like you got messed over somehow.

Several years ago, Cowgill would have had a cameraman with him on the sideline. Now he and other broadcast journalists have to shoot their own footage. From the video clip I saw, he was focused more on the camera work than getting out of the way of the play.

Sideline reporter experiences sideline activity. "Such are the hazards of your vocation."

Maybe he should become an actuary.....he can stay in his nice, safe, climate controlled cubicle and analyze the risks others take in the outside world.

GBB!

There appears to be only one other person next to Cowgill (in white shirt) on the goal line. So much for the overcrowded sideline claim.

I honestly hope he realizes this isn’t wise, drops it, and admits he shouldn’t have gone through with this lawsuit. Some will still hold it against him; and that’s life. However, I can respect an admission of a bad move. I sincerely see all that as the right move at this point. I just can’t believe a guy who seemingly has some sense thought this would go well, especially if you want to keep living and working in Louisville.

He's only going after Trinity because they have deep pockets. hopefully any sane judge will throw this out.
Matt Jones said the large “Trinity mafia” is expressing their disapproval loudly in Louisville. Fred may want to walk it back.

What a pansy ass clown.

Many years ago, I used to cover high school sports for a few newspapers. I understood the risks of being on the sidelines, but I worked for small pubs and had to be my own photographer.

During a game in 2007, a RB ripped a big run down the sideline. I got a few really good shots. DB caught up with the RB and shoved him out of bounds right where I was standing. Next thing I knew, I was on the ground with scattered notes, a bloody nose and sore ankle. Kid who ran over me helped me up and apologized. I told him it was part of the game and my job. No ill will.

Coaches gave me some pizza after the game. Guess I should’ve sued the school.

And if the sideline was overcroweded it certainly wasnt where he was standing. They were the only two in that spot with all kinds of space to move around. It was so open it seemed odd that more people werent crowded aroudn the goal line. The judge should start laughing as they wad this one up and toss it in the trash and say "next"

"Failed to keep premises safe"... I'm pretty sure Trinity has a fence around their field. Get behind the fence if you're too afraid to get hit.
“Uh, I would like a press pass to be on the field during the … cut flower show.”

Think the jury will hear this quote?

“I've danced around a lot of those, and the odds were against me after 36 years, I guess," Cowgill told the Courier Journal in an Aug. 21, 2021 story about the incident. "At least I got hit by one of the best (Tucker). At 63, I’m pretty nimble on my feet. But I hesitated for a second, and that’s what got me."

I saw that. His case is over before it even starts.

Happened to Steve Moss of WKYT. Don't think he ever considered suing anyone for it.
