Provided he gets the Waiver of course. I believe in Askew just not right away. Just curious what everyone thinks and either way I love the team next year!

Absolutely, I'm not sold on Askew at all, apparently neither are recruiting analyst...he dropped even further in 247s finals today ...has fallen in every final rankings

Point guard will be good. Depth in the post may be a problem if we don't add another post player.

Well considering you do not even know his MF'n name, I will take this as a hater post. By the way, Mintz is more than capable of playing the point, and has done so at a very high level. The Big East Conference. His stats improved every year he played. He will be a SR. and along with Sarr, provides veteran, battle tested leadership.

Weak spot is relative.

We have a top 5 player at SG and a top 10 player at SF. We have our only returning player at PF, also a former 5-star. We now have a Senior double digit high D-1 talent at Center.

So I guess PG could be our weakest spot, talent wise.

But, it’s probably our deepest spot with a proven high D-1 level Senior and a 5-star Freshman. It’s also probably our best position from a shooting perspective. Mintz is a good shooter and Askew is suppose to be one of the best in his class.

So, I guess it depends on your definition of a weakness.

If Sarr gets his waiver, we really don’t have many weaknesses aside from possibly 3 point shooting, which seems to always be a weakness for a Cal team.

Don’t forget Di Gregorio. Great bloodlines and, no Caneintally, he will not play PF.

What is MFn?

Askew is a stud, Mintz is a solid vet, both Boston and Clarke can play some 1. We’re deep.
Don't forget Clarke is gonna play point possibly as well
Boston and Clarke are both great ball handlers, plus Sarr, Brooks are Williams are solid passers in the paint. Williams avg like 3 ast per game this season. We can do a lot of different looks at PG and primary setup man if need be.

Clarke is def a head scratcher. I'll never understand that
Only thing I can figure is due to the lack of exposure at his high school. Now, Ware is also puzzling. He outplayed the #1 player in the country on both ends of the court and drops? Makes no sense at all.

Aside from 2013 team 2012 may have been our weakest year at point guard. And that turned out pretty well. Although credit to Teague he played great in the tournament and hit some big shots in the title game.

If you go by position, PG might be the weakest. But, I still feel Askew and Mintz will be good. They just need to not turn the ball over, play good defense, and get the ball to our scorers.
I feel like Mintz will be the starter. He has the college experience.
They don't need to score that much but be able to keep defense's honest. Haggans was not a big scorer. We mainly need them to distribute the ball and play good defense.

I think we'll be fine at PG, I have faith in Askew. He may struggle early, but Mintz should do a fine job of taking some of the pressure off of him as he adjusts to the college game. I feel like Clarke could even step in and play a bit at point guard if needed, as he's by all accounts, a great passer.

I’ll take Teague 100/100 over Hagans. Dude was a TO machine when he wasn’t laser focused. Matter of fact, I’ll take Mintz over Hagans as well.

I am always concerned with Freshmen, regardless of their ranking or 'stars' by their name until they get some game experience under their belts. I hate to use EJ as an example but he came in as a McDonald's AA and I am sure most will agree he was a disappointment. So count me in the "concerned" column regarding the point guard position.

We were weak at the position in 2014 as well. It took Andrew Harrison a year to develop in to a good player. In years with a very weak PG, we've one the championship, lost in the finals, and missed the NCAA tournament. It's boom or bust lol

Our options at the PG position aren't limited to Askew and Mintz. Clarke might end up being our best option at the position. When relying on freshman, having many options can be a good thing. We are more likely to have a quality PG out of a pool of 3 players rather than a pool of 1.

Agree. We have countless options as the season evolves to get the right mix.

Actually think the 1 is a strength. Two guys as talented as Mintz and Askew at that position is about as good as you could ever ask for. Think they compliment each other well. Askew will get better much faster having to face Mintz in practice everyday. The outside shooting from the 3 spot an unknown at this point. If Williams comes we know how he can shoot. If Boston is a good outside shooter and Williams comes don't see any weak spots. With two high energy bigs that can play some together at times we should be much better on the boards this year.

I kind of like Mintz over Askew for this particular team.

Mintz has D-1 experience. He has played in the NCAA tourney. He should be a steadying force on a team that needs that. Plus, he is a solid defender.

Askew might be the better talent, but Mintz has a few years of college experience to pull from.

I think a steady hand that doesn’t turn the ball over and plays excellent defense is more valuable for this team.

Maturity at PG should really help this team gel.

I like the idea of starting two Seniors who have started on high D-1 level teams. Creighton has been a solid program the last few years and Wake plays in the ACC, so both Mintz and Sarr should be ready to lead.

Give me a point guard like Epps any day of the week. Intelligent, played under control, made the right play, clutch, and a winner.

Epps is underrated historically. He didn't possess overwhelming scoring ability, but he was effective. He shot it well from deep and took good care of the basketball. We'd be in a great position if we got Epps level production from the PG spot this upcoming season.

Totally agree that Epps was a really good point guard. He had the art of getting the ball to the right spot exactly on time for easy scores, that's a gift that's very hard to coach. Pitino just couldn't set him down, he was that good. IMHO the only other PG we've had that delivered the ball on time as well was Tyler Ulis, whom I consider the best true PG

He cannot be worse than Hagans - He will shoot better from all 3 levels and end up with a better assist to turnover average than Hagans
Book it
