With Derek sidelined, This is Skal's chance to ...........

I wish that were the case. I just don't see the dramatic turnaround him that is necessary. Is suspect Humphries will be the one to get the minutes

He might step up his flexing game and his elbow game, but I just don't think he cares enough to make a change.

Skal needs many hours in the weight room. He is simply too weak and fragile to play effectively at this level.
Kid has no problem squaring up with the first opposing player that brushes him the wrong way. I don't get that. He acts like he wants to go right then and there on the court with someone at least once a game.

Op, Skal will not help us significantly the rest of the season. He might hit a few jump shots and a block a couple of shots but he is too much of a liability. The only reason why he'll be getting a lot of playing time coming up is because we are without 2 starters.

I think that's his confusion showing about the coaches telling him he has to learn to fight.

I agree Humphries will get more time and probably start but the opportunity will be there for Skal if he wants it. I'm not one to bash any kid and I know he's trying but it's all about him.

Yeah and honestly Humphries isn't just some chump, that kid can play. He will add a dimension to UK on both sides of the floor that we haven't had all season. He may not be able to spin in the lane but he csn grab rebounds, block shots and get tough buckets in the paint.

I'm with everyone else in going with Humphries over Skal. Humphries got 12 rebounds Sat. night, how many games did it take Skal to get that many ? With Willis out for a while I see Matthews and Hawkins getting more minutes.

This is definitely true but I don't think it is the sole reason for his struggles this season. I think his main problem is his basic understanding of the game. He appears lost and unsure of what he's supposed to be doing every second on the court. The only thing he does that looks natural is squaring up for a jump shot. There is nothing wrong with that, but everything else is puzzling. I've never seen any freshmen ever at UK with his skill set to not seem to grasp the basic principles of playing basketball. Him learning on the fly at this point is not what we need. I think Willis' minutes should primarily go to Humphries with Hawkins getting some also. Matthews isn't ready either. Cal keeps giving him a chance and he goes back to the bench after 1 or 2 trips up and down the floor.

It's a nice thought but Skal has had several chances to step up already. I hope he does but will not count on it.

Yup.

But makes perfect sense when you consider how little organized basketball he has actually played. He looks like a kid who hasn't played much basketball, but has spent thousands of hours in the gym perfecting his jump shot…because, well, that's what he's done.

It's just amazing how this went undetected throughout his prep career. I realize he didn't play on particularly competitive team the last year or so of high school but how was he rated so high by all the so-called recruiting experts. I guess when you see a 6'11 kid that can shoot outside like he can that you just assume he has most of the other skills to go with it. Right now he does not need to be out on the floor. The other 4 players can not depend on him on either end of the floor and that has to be very frustrating for them and Cal.

Skal will either go late second round in the draft of be on our bench for a few years. My guess is he will enter the draft based on projections but when push comes to shove, no NBA team is going to actually risk a first round pick on this guy and the projections won't play out for him.

It's actually kind of sad for him. He has been hyped by the machine which our staff actually bought into and it's really not fair to the kid who had nothing to do with the hype. If he played four years in college without the hype he might turn into a decent late round draft pick by his senior year.

Any time we have to "rely" on significant contribution from Skal, we will be in deep trouble. I would rather take my chances with Hawkins playing the 5.

Basketball is a game of match ups. I would play Humphries and Lee to start and sub in Skal at forward with Mathews. The problem with the options is that only Skal can shoot from more than 10 feet reliably. A Humphries- Skal set could be interesting in that it frees up Skal from rebounding but creates a mis-match at the 4 spot for most opponents. My biggest concern is that without Willis the middle will get clogged for our guards.

Skal needs to step up here

Skal's really just not there at all outside of hitting a jumper or 2.
If Humphries is in on that last play at aTm, we win.

I never say anyone should stay. I'm always on the side of go get paid now. Skal needs to stay. And honestly, short of a major improvement in the off-seasonn, I'm not sure how much he plays next year.

Cant disagree anymore.. He just doesn't have it and it's a shame.. Hope we play well against Bama too, they need this game bad..
Everyone's entitled to their opinion but honestly if Skal didn't have all those stars next to his name everyone would be asking why he's not playing. He'd be sitting next to the wood chopper.

Step up and get significant playing time and help this team..
Forget it, he couldn't help any team. He will need to transfer or go to the D League next year. We need Bolden, if nothing else to keep Duke from getting him. Bolden is better than Skal.

But you have to understand, Skal has all of those stars because he has a great deal of potential. The value is there. Willis couldn't play for 2+ years, and is killing it. People kept calling or Willis to play. But Skal can't struggle?

Skal has had an opportunity all year to prove himself, and Willis' being injured does not change that fact. With/without Willis, he will have a chance to prove himself and it will be welcome.

I doubt it changes anything, Skal has had all year to prove himself and Willis was never in his way stunting his growth.

He's already had the opportunity. It's not happening.

Ain't counting on it. Young man doesn't seem to have that fire within. Would love to see Matthews take a step up though. Excited to see what he can do.
